How well can AI systems explain stock returns around earnings announcements — in real time? Backtests can't answer this: models are trained on all historical data, so any backtest suffers from look-ahead bias, and markets are reflexive — as investors adopt AI, prices adjust, eroding the very patterns a system was trained to exploit. Explaining Markets is a live, out-of-sample benchmark designed to sidestep both problems, introduced in the working paper by Koijen and Levy.
Each quarter, participating systems receive earnings events as they happen and submit predictions using any information available prior to the announcement, plus the earnings call transcript. Predictions are scored against realized returns, and standings update on a live leaderboard.
In the paper, the best-optimized agentic systems more than double the explained variation in returns — R² rising from 8% to close to 20%. That's the starting line, not the ceiling: the competition exists to push it much higher.
Sign up, read the docs, and follow the live leaderboard at explainingmarkets.ai. Your code only needs to receive signed webhooks and call the predictions endpoint.
