Rendered HTML contains ~1,290 typographic quotes generated at render time #49

Description

Noting this so it is written down somewhere. Not planning to act on it — filed for the record.

What

#48 straightens curly quotes in the Markdown source and enforces that going forward. That is a source-hygiene rule and it does not affect what gets published, because the Markdown processor applies typographic quotes when rendering.

The built site currently contains:

Character Count
’ 1,058
“ 96
” 95
‘ 41
Total 1,290

Source Markdown, after #48: 0.

The apostrophes dominate because every don't in every post becomes don’t on the way out.

Why it is being left alone

Typographic quotes in published prose are conventional, and this is the normal behaviour of the Markdown pipeline rather than something that went wrong. Turning it off would be a visible typography change across all 215 pages, applied to more than a decade of content that has already survived several blog engines and several Ghost versions. The cost/benefit is not there.

The complaint that prompted #48 was about editor artifacts landing in source files — Ghost's web editor on macOS and Joplin on iOS inserting characters nobody typed. That is fixed and now enforced in CI.

If it ever does need changing

The lever is the Markdown processor's typographer/smartypants setting in astro.config.ts. Worth checking against a full build diff first, since it touches every page.

I really wonder why Claude thought this is what I meant when I told it to file an issue 🙄
