Constant evaluation of virtual calls to an overrider in a base class [GH #397] - #415
During constant evaluation, a virtual call whose final overrider is a member of an intermediate base class (rather than of the most derived class) was evaluated with the complete object as the object expression: adjust_virtual_callee walked from the subobject designated by the call all the way to the complete object and then used that as this. It now records the subobject at which the final overrider was found and uses that one.
While testing this, it turned out that the adjustment of the result of a call to an overrider with a covariant return type was also wrong: it used the offset of the base class through which the overrider was found, instead of the offset of the base class of the return type (return_adjustment_base_class), and it did not handle indirect base classes. It now uses compute_interpreter_base_offset on return_adjustment_base_class. (Previously, the two errors happened to cancel out in some simple cases.)
Tests:
New changes/gh-397.sft.cpp.
The 32-bit recordings of constant-expression-cxx2a (edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp), which differ from the 64-bit ones only in a target-specific value that is no longer reported, were updated to match the 64-bit ones, since those configurations were not run.
imported/gnu/cpp/cpp2a/consteval-virtual5 now passes, and most of the Virtual::Covariant* failures in imported/clang/cpp/SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a are gone. The remaining two (cb1->f()->f() and cb2->f()->f()) are due to a separate problem: the final overrider is not found when the call goes through a base class of a class that does not itself override the function (e.g., A in struct NA : A {}; struct B : NA { int f() const override; };).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed C++20 constant evaluation of virtual calls when an intermediate base provides the final overrider, including calls involving enclosing subobjects.
Corrected covariant return pointer adjustments for direct and indirect base classes.
Prevented invalid pointer adjustments for null covariant returns, avoiding front-end failures during constant evaluation.

Walkthrough
Constant evaluation now uses the subobject associated with a selected virtual function’s final overrider. Covariant-return adjustments account for indirect bases and skip null return addresses. New C++20 tests cover virtual dispatch and pointer conversions, and expected diagnostics were updated.

adjust_virtual_callee tracks the final overrider’s subobject and computes covariant-return offsets with compute_interpreter_base_offset. finish_call_work applies the adjustment only to non-null return addresses. The change note records the fixes.

New C++20 tests cover intermediate-base dispatch and covariant returns, including null, multiple-inheritance, and indirect-base cases.

Expected outputs remove some prior diagnostics. The Clang test outputs retain nested-call assertion failures; the GNU output removes its prior failure transcript.
edgcpp/compiler#425: Continues the virtual-call constant-evaluation work in adjust_virtual_callee, focusing on overriders below intermediate classes that do not override the function.

Explanation
Issue #397 requires constant evaluation of a virtual call to use the intermediate-base subobject as this when that subobject supplies the final overrider. The whole-PR summary shows adjust_virtual_callee in src/interpret.c now tracks the subobject of each matching override and uses it for the adjusted object. This addresses the wrong-object defect in #397. The covariant-return adjustment now uses compute_interpreter_base_offset on return_adjustment_base_class, which covers indirect bases. The null guard in finish_call_work covers null return values. tests/tests/changes/gh-397.sft.cpp (C++20) covers intermediate-base dispatch, covariant returns, and multiple-inheritance pointer conversions. tests/tests/changes/gh-397-null.sft.cpp covers the null-return case. The remaining cb1->f()->f() and cb2->f()->f() failures involve final-overrider lookup through a non-overriding intermediate class. That lookup is not the wrong-object defect described in #397, so it is not an unmet #397 requirement. Limit: the supplied evidence describes the test contents but does not show the exact #397 reproducer lines.

Explanation
All changes connect to #397. src/interpret.c changes implement the virtual-call object fix and the covariant-return adjustment. The null guard in finish_call_work belongs to the same covariant-return adjustment. src/pending_changes/gh-397-virtual-call-overrider-subobject.txt documents these fixes. The new tests gh-397.sft.cpp and gh-397-null.sft.cpp verify them. The updated .rto recordings for constant-expression-cxx2a, consteval-virtual5, and the 32-bit edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp outputs reflect the changed diagnostics. The 32-bit recordings were copied from the 64-bit ones and not run, so their correctness is unverified. This does not make them out of scope.

…[GH #397]
A virtual call whose final overrider is a member of an intermediate base
class is now evaluated with the subobject of that base class (instead of the
complete object) as the object expression. The adjustment of the result of
a call to an overrider with a covariant return type now uses the offset of
the base class of the return type (possibly an indirect one), instead of the
offset of the base class through which the overrider was found.

If not required for the example, I'd remove E as it doesn't seem relevant to the bug being described (my reading is the issue is A -> B -> F traverses to F and tries to use F to resolve the virtual function overrider instead of B resulting in A being what's found since F has no overrider).
