Replace boolean permission answers with typed decisions and HostPolicy-controlled options. Restrict session grants to exact canonical resources from trusted native file builtins.
Require fresh per-invocation approval for shell and MCP; legacy --allow cannot authorize them.
Add a reject-first inline TUI approval selector, keyboard navigation, on-demand diffs, compact resolution traces, and fail-closed cancellation/resize handling.
Prevent sensitive and unclassified approval previews/resources from being persisted; preserve the live request and legacy deserialization. Include the recovered .agents/AGENTS.md.
size-exception was approved for this integrated PR. The diff exceeds the default 400-line budget because the authorization contract, runtime provenance, application/reference loops, TUI interaction, and security regressions form one coupled change. Scope is limited to the Huginn permission redesign and its tests/documentation.
Validation
just ci passed (1197s) with 90/90 E2E, 386/386 frontend tests, Rust tests, coverage, lint, security scans, and cargo audit. Local ignored scratch/editor artifacts were temporarily excluded and restored with matching SHA-256 manifests.
Final pre-push hooks passed workspace Clippy, Gitleaks, and all workspace Rust tests. Focused final Huginn runtime/core and TUI suites, formatting, and documentation lint passed.
SonarCloud requires SONAR_TOKEN and the remote service; the cross-platform matrix runs on push. Both are left to PR CI.
Risk note
For security, approval previews are persisted only when the request includes a resource explicitly classified as non-sensitive. Legacy records still deserialize, but an unclassified preview is omitted if the session is saved again.

New Features
Approval prompts now appear inline with the conversation and offer clear choices, including session approval for eligible file changes.
Expanded previews can be reviewed before confirming; approval choices remain visible while browsing details. Rejection is selected by default.
Bug Fixes
Shell, file changes, and other protected actions require fresh approval unless an eligible file change has an exact session grant.
Sensitive paths and previews are omitted from persisted approval history; previews are also omitted when resource sensitivity is unknown. .npmrc paths are treated as sensitive.
The PR replaces boolean approval results with explicit decisions. It adds runtime-verified file resource metadata, session grants for eligible file mutations, and an inline terminal approval panel. Approval-history serialization omits sensitive or unclassified previews and resource details.
Approval APIs now use ApprovalDecision values, and prompts receive allowed choices. ApprovalRequest adds optional resource and provenance metadata. Serialization excludes provenance and omits preview and resource data for sensitive or unclassified resources.
The registry marks requests untrusted by default and stamps eligible native file requests with canonical workspace paths and sensitivity classifications. Tests cover provenance spoofing, symlink handling, and persistence of sensitive and public approval history.
HostPolicy applies confirmation rules and offers session approval only for eligible native file requests. Session grants are scoped to the session, action, and canonical path. Execution proceeds for decisions other than Reject.
The terminal approval flow replaces typed-code confirmation with an inline panel and selectable decisions. Approval is blocked until expanded details are rendered and scrolled to the end. Input-handoff and terminal tests cover queued input, cancellation, and viewport changes.
The audit instruction describes cargo audit as a blocking gate. The English-only documentation instruction is removed.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review d8d8c
The approval flow now fails closed and the earlier authorization concerns are resolved. Before or shortly after merge, fix the missing preview in live JSON output, the shell-preview scroll stall, the Windows test fixture path, and the tests that do not isolate provenance checks. These are bounded issues and none of them lets an approval through without review.

Rook Architecture And Provider Contracts
Not applicable. The diff changes Huginn code, tests, and documentation, but no Rook code. The Cargo.lock change adds a Huginn dependency to the Huginn reference extension.
Full details: Huginn Inward Dependency Boundaries
Explanation
No inward dependency violation was introduced. The core and application manifests are unchanged, and their dependencies match the architecture guard allowlists. The changed source adds policy and domain types, not concrete adapters. A manual check of the guard’s source patterns found no matches. The CI guard itself was not run because the toolchain is unavailable.

Explanation
[ #616 ] The authorization, TUI, persistence, tests, and related documentation support the issue. The removal of the repository-wide English documentation instruction from .agents/AGENTS.md has no stated connection to the approval flow.
Resolution
Restore the English documentation instruction, or move its removal to a separate change.
Full details: Plugin Lifecycle And Revocation
Explanation
The new native file builtin batch lacks focused lifecycle tests. composition.rs:132-138 groups the tools under one plugin, and tools.rs:193-227 adds a separate staged registration path. Existing rollback and stale-handle tests exercise other registration paths. The new production tests check approval metadata, not batch rollback or revocation.
Resolution
Add focused tests for atomic publication, rollback after partial batch registration, and revocation of retained handles after removal and reactivation.
Full details: Approvals And Terminal Authority
Explanation
The PR changes headless and live JSON behavior. ApprovalRequest::serialize removes unclassified previews, and Output::emit uses that serializer for live events. Native shell requests have no resource, so their command previews disappear from JSON. Also, HostPolicy now requires a prompt for shell requests even with --allow; huginn run has no prompt input, and the changed guardrail test expects denial where the base expected execution. The prior UI concerns are addressed: resolve_modal_at requires an armed, fully reviewed modal, and the narrow renderer shows the selected choice. Tests cover both cases.
Resolution
Separate live JSON serialization from persistence redaction and add compatibility tests. Reconcile the headless compatibility contract with fresh, host-controlled shell decisions without bypassing approval. Add tests for the chosen noninteractive authorization path.
Full details: Security And Supply Chain Regressions
Explanation
MCP approvals can still authorize an undisplayed request. An MCP server controls the tool name (runtime/src/mcp.rs:147-167), and safe() preserves newlines. At widths of 40 or more, a multiline action can push the selector and preview outside the approval panel (presentation/src/terminal.rs:1094-1149). The UI nevertheless marks the preview as rendered from the intended lines, not the painted area. End also skips to the last page for MCP requests (overlay.rs:257-258), allowing approval without displaying the request. The current changes block collapsed approval and show the selected option at 20 columns, but do not resolve the prior concern for MCP previews.
Resolution
Render untrusted action and summary fields as single-line text. Mark details reviewed only when the preview and selected decision are actually visible. Require sequential review for MCP requests. Add regression tests with multiline MCP tool names and narrow viewports.
Full details: External Compatibility And Regression Tests
Explanation
Compatibility gaps remain: - Live --json approval events now omit unclassified previews, including shell previews (apps/huginn/src/terminal.rs:119-174; crates/huginn/runtime/src/tools.rs:522-528). The architecture documentation describes persistence, not the live JSON change. Serializer unit tests cover redaction, but the CLI event shape has no regression assertion. - --allow native.shell no longer authorizes headless execution, yet CLI help still gives it as an example (apps/huginn/src/main.rs:61-76). The architecture documents the restriction, but CLI guidance does not explain migration to interactive approval. - ApprovalRequest gained required Rust struct fields (crates/huginn/core/src/lib.rs:362-374), while the plugin example still omits them (docs/huginn/authoring.md:132-135). The example no longer compiles.
Resolution
Document the live JSON event change and add a CLI regression test. Update CLI help and user guidance for the affected --allow actions and interactive alternatives. Update the plugin example and migration guidance for the new fields and decision types.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[ #616 ] The selector starts at Reject, supports keyboard decisions and on-demand details, and records a compact trace. HostPolicy limits session grants to trusted native file operations on matching canonical paths. Shell and MCP require confirmation despite legacy grants. Serialization protects sensitive and unclassified previews while preserving live requests and legacy deserialization. The summary reports tests for the selector, grant boundaries, provenance, shell --allow, and persistence. It does not establish test coverage for repeated shell and MCP invocations or the MCP --allow restriction.
Resolution
Provide the relevant automated test evidence for repeated shell and MCP approvals and the MCP --allow restriction.

Review comments at @crates/huginn/application/src/authorization.rs:
- Line 16: Update HostPolicy’s session_grants cache so each grant is keyed by
both the session identity and the file path, using the same current-session
identity when checking and recording grants. Ensure grants from one session
cannot authorize mutations in another, including when HostPolicy is reused.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/application/tests/contracts.rs:
- Line 175: Update the session-grant fixtures in both the direct test and the
SessionGrantTool test to use platform-native absolute paths instead of
hard-coded /workspace paths. Preserve the paths’ intended file locations so the
tests continue to exercise grant reuse on Windows and other platforms.
- Around line 297-305: Restore coverage in the policy approval contract tests by
adding a custom-action case: verify an exact generic allowlist match returns
ApproveOnce without prompting, while a sibling action still prompts. Use the
existing policy.approve flow and prompt request counter to assert both outcomes.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/core/src/lib.rs:
- Around line 398-402: Separate live approval-event serialization from
persisted-history redaction: preserve `request.preview` in live events
regardless of the history redaction setting, while continuing to redact
sensitive data in persisted history. Update the serialization path containing
`preview: explicitly_non_sensitive.then_some(...)` without weakening the history
safeguards.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/presentation/src/overlay.rs:
- Around line 255-259: Track the last painted scroll position in the modal
rendering flow and update it only after a preview position is drawn. In the
`KeyCode::Enter` approval guard, require an expanded modal’s last painted
position to have reached `modal.last_scroll` before accepting approval; preserve
the existing armed and details-rendered checks.
- Around line 256-259: Update the KeyCode::Enter handling so the preview-end
guard applies only to approval decisions; allow an armed rejection to confirm
while the expanded preview is still scrollable. Add a keyboard test covering
rejection before the preview reaches its end.
- Around line 260-266: Update the modal Enter handling around `modal.armed` so
approval requires a fresh, request-specific confirmation that input received
before the request gained focus cannot satisfy. Establish and validate that
confirmation against the current request before resolving an approval, while
preserving rejection behavior.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/presentation/src/state.rs:
- Around line 1476-1480: Update the decision validation in resolve_modal so
approval decisions are accepted only when modal.armed is true, while preserving
the existing ability to reject an unarmed modal. Add a regression test verifying
that an unarmed modal cannot return ApproveOnce before a viable draw.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/presentation/src/terminal.rs:
- Around line 949-960: Update the selector construction around action_names and
selected so that when the selector does not fit within the available terminal
width, it still displays the full selected choice and its marker. Preserve the
existing rendering when the selector fits.
- Around line 813-818: In the OverlayView::Approval handling block, rely on the
existing overlay_identity check to select the active modal instead of filtering
state.modal_mut() by request.id, which may differ from the sanitized ID. Remove
the now-unused id binding from the pattern and update modal state on the modal
returned by modal_mut().
- Around line 677-687: Update the approval presentation around `effect_line` so
shell requests display the complete command in the visible panel before the user
can approve, even when details are collapsed. Preserve the existing resource and
non-shell summaries, and ensure approval cannot proceed while the command
remains hidden.
- Line 669: Update the terminal display handling for m.request.id to flatten
multiline IDs so they occupy one display row, while retaining the original ID
for modal identity checks.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/reference-extension/src/step_loop.rs:
- Around line 865-866: Move the approval test out of the inline tests module and
into a separate integration-test target; exercise both approval decisions
through the public AgentLoop::run interface, adapting the test rather than
accessing private dispatch.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/runtime/src/tools.rs:
- Around line 59-62: Update the resource-stamping flow to classify both the
originally requested path and the resolved path with huginn_guards::sensitive,
and mark ApprovalResource sensitive if either path is sensitive. Preserve the
requested path through resolution and apply this before assigning
request.resource.
- Around line 918-919: Move approval_resource_tests out of tools.rs into a
separate Rust test target, preserving the private trusted-registration boundary
without exposing that state publicly. Ensure the relocated test retains the
symlink-swap assertion and establish a supported way for the separate target to
exercise the required behavior.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/runtime/tests/sessions_persistence.rs:
- Line 51: Update the sensitive_preview fixture in the session persistence tests
so its synthetic markers no longer trigger the generic_api_key rule, or add an
allowlist scoped only to the exact fixture values and path; do not weaken the
rule globally.
- Line 93: Update the persistence test around the encoded_session assertions to
decode the JSON and compare the decoded resource paths with public_path, rather
than searching the encoded string. Verify the sensitive path is omitted from the
decoded paths so escaped backslashes cannot cause false results.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/runtime/tests/tool_lifecycle.rs:
- Line 376: Add a test alongside the existing `spoof` fixture that publicly
registers `write_file` or `edit_file` with a matching action and an absolute
`resolved` path inside the workspace. Assert the resulting request remains
untrusted and has no resource, ensuring a native-looking registration does not
trigger name-based elevation.
- Line 525: Extend the write_file lifecycle test to cover an escaped symlink
whose target already exists: create the outside target, call tool.prepare with
the symlink path, and assert that preparation rejects it. Keep the existing
dangling-symlink case and its assertions intact.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Plugin Lifecycle And Revocation:
Add focused tests for the native file builtin batch. Verify atomic publication,
rollback after a partial registration failure, and revocation of retained
handles when the batch is removed or reactivated.
- Approvals And Terminal Authority:
Separate persistence redaction from live JSON serialization. Preserve the
headless authorization contract while keeping decisions under host control.
Render the selected decision in every viable viewport and reject positive
resolutions until the terminal has armed the modal. Add JSON compatibility and
negative tests for hidden and unarmed approvals.
- Security And Supply Chain Regressions:
Require the user to view the full command or MCP request before approval. Keep
the selected decision visible at every supported viewport size, or disarm
approval when it cannot be shown. Add regression tests for hidden details and
narrow viewports.
- External Compatibility And Regression Tests:
Document the live JSON change and add a CLI regression test for its approval
event shape. Update CLI help and user guidance to describe the affected
`--allow` actions and the interactive alternative. Update the plugin authoring
example and migration guidance for the new approval fields and decision types.

`#[cfg(test)]` module.
- Around line 252-254: Limit the expanded-modal Down and PageDown handling to

- Around line 35-170: Move the four `approval_resolution_tests` cases out of the
inline `#[cfg(test)]` module in `state.rs` and into the existing integration

relying on `Modal::test_stub`.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/presentation/src/terminal.rs:
- Around line 1104-1108: Update the approval-choice guidance in the panel text

preview through its last page. Keep the existing Ctrl+F and scrolling controls
clear, and ensure the guidance matches the checks in approval_input and
resolve_modal_at.
- Around line 375-417: Remove the inline focus_drain_tests module; FocusDrain
handoff behavior is already covered by
enter_queued_with_approval_trigger_cannot_confirm_the_new_overlay. If the unit

rather than keeping them inline.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/presentation/tests/pty.rs:

and fail clearly if the approval lease is not promoted before the timeout.
Review comments at @crates/huginn/runtime/tests/tool_lifecycle.rs:

established session-binding API.
