fix: harden clang-format and clang-tidy hook arguments - #319
Four small fixes found while testing the hooks with pre-commit and prek. Each one has a test that fails before the fix and passes after it.
Changes
A file name can no longer act as an option. pre-commit passes file names as they are. A file named --load=evil.cpp at the repository root made clang-tidy load evil.cpp as a plugin and run its code, and a file named --files=list.cpp made clang-format rewrite every file listed in list.cpp, even outside the repository (both reproduced with pre-commit run --all-files). A file name that starts with - now gets a ./ prefix in both hooks.
clang-format: -n now fails on unformatted files. The hook added --Werror only for --dry-run, so -n (its short form) passed silently. --Werror now goes before the user's arguments.
clang-format: no crash on source files that are not UTF-8.--dry-run prints source lines, and a Latin-1 or GBK file raised UnicodeDecodeError. Output is now decoded with errors="replace". clang-tidy already escapes such bytes itself, so it is unchanged.
clang-tidy: -j runs serially for every fix option.--fix-errors, -fix-notes and -export-fixes= were not recognized, so several clang-tidy processes could change the same header or write the same fixes file at once. Fix options now match with one or two dashes.
Testing
uv run pytest: 398 passed, coverage 100%.
Ran the hooks through pre-commit on sample repositories: the --load= plugin is not loaded, the file outside the repository is left alone, -n fails on an unformatted file, and a Latin-1 file no longer crashes the hook.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Dry-run formatting checks now report unformatted files as failures, including when the short-form dry-run option is used.
Invalid UTF-8 in formatting output is handled safely.
Fix-related lint options are handled consistently, and parallel execution is avoided when fix or export options are used.
Filenames beginning with a dash are treated as filenames rather than command-line options.
System calls cannot be simulated consistently and are left out of the measure. The reported value understates the real cost. Switch to the Walltime instrument to measure them.
No successful run was found on main (e75ed5d) during the generation of this report, so d7eaff9 was used instead as the comparison base. There might be some changes unrelated to this pull request in this report. ↩
The clang-format and clang-tidy hooks now normalize source-file arguments that begin with a dash. clang-format updates dry-run error handling and replaces invalid UTF-8 in subprocess output. clang-tidy recognizes additional file-modifying options when deciding whether to add -fix and whether to run in parallel.
The shared file_argument utility prefixes existing filenames that begin with a dash with ./. Both hooks apply it to source-file arguments. Tests cover filenames that resemble options.
clang-format dry-run and output handling cpp_linter_hooks/clang_format.py, tests/test_clang_format.py
The hook adds --Werror for -n and --dry-run unless an argument starts with --Werror. It replaces invalid UTF-8 in subprocess output. Tests cover dry-run failures, command construction, and decoding.
The hook recognizes fix and export-fixes options in either dash form and with optional values. It adds -fix only when no fix option is specified and disables parallel execution for file-modifying options. A test covers --fix-notes with multiple source files.
cpp-linter/cpp-linter-hooks#303: Adds clang-tidy parallel execution and --fix handling. This PR extends the execution-safety checks to additional fix and export-fixes options.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6b16c
The PR hardens the clang hooks but leaves gaps. clang-format's --dry-run=true style options may not fail on unformatted files, option-like filenames in some argument layouts are still not protected in clang-tidy, and '@'-prefixed files can be read as response files. A user combining --fix with an explicit =false fix option also gets no fixes applied. Address the dry-run detection regression before merging.

cpp_linter_hooks/clang_tidy.py:699 Minor · Security & Privacy · Poor tradeoff
Option-shaped positional filenames are not protected when the last file has an unrecognized suffix.
_split_source_files scans from the end and stops at the first argument whose suffix is not in SOURCE_FILE_SUFFIXES. When the last argument is a file such as header.inc, no arguments are classified as source files. _file_argument then does not run on the earlier arguments. A file named --load=plugin.cpp therefore remains in the option list and is passed to clang-tidy as an option.
The default types_or: [c++, c] selection does not include .inc files. Such a file reaches the hook only when the repository configuration overrides types_or so that the selection admits it.
Protection needs to cover every positional file name, not only the suffix-matched tail. Applying _file_argument to all of clang_tidy_args would require telling positional files apart from option arguments. This code path does not have that information, so no local change is established.

Update the argument handling around _split_source_files so every positional
filename, including files with unrecognized suffixes, is protected by
_file_argument before reaching clang-tidy. First establish how to distinguish
positional filenames from option arguments in this parsing path; preserve option
arguments unchanged and do not apply _file_argument indiscriminately to all of
clang_tidy_args.
Add a changed-line test for a dash-prefixed source file.
The test at tests/test_clang_tidy.py:815 passes --all-lines. The hook skips the changed-line lookup in that mode, so the line filter for ./--load=plugin.cpp is not exercised. The helper tests in tests/test_changed_lines.py cover only a ./-prefixed name such as ./src/b.cpp. No existing test runs a staged dash-prefixed source file through the default changed-line path.
Add a test that stages a file whose name starts with - in a temporary git repository. Run run_clang_tidy without --all-lines. Assert that the generated --line-filter entry uses the ./-prefixed name. A mocked changed_lines bypasses the git lookup and name normalization, so it does not cover this path. Without such a test, a regression in the line filtering for ./-prefixed option-like names would not fail the suite.

Treat --dry-run= as dry-run so --Werror is added.
_is_dry_run ignores an empty value after =. Older clang-format builds parse --dry-run= as true. The hook then omits --Werror, and an unformatted file can pass. Add the empty string to the accepted values, and add a test case for --dry-run=.

Put the injected --Werror before the user's arguments, which may end the options with "--", and test a dash-prefixed file through the real changed-line path.
Use plain checks for -n and the fix options, keep errors="replace" only for clang-format (clang-tidy escapes non-UTF-8 bytes itself), and give clang-format the same ./ prefix for file names that look like options.

Serialize fix operations across hook processes.
This guard only serializes work inside one hook process. The hook definition sets require_serial: false, so pre-commit can run multiple processes concurrently. With --fix-notes, those processes can still modify the same header concurrently. Coordinate across processes or require serial hook execution. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Restore detection of enabled dry-run forms.
--dry-run=true, --dry-run=1, and -dry-run no longer trigger --Werror. An unformatted file can therefore pass the hook. Restore value-aware detection and the single-dash spelling.

Check boolean values before suppressing -fix.
When the hook’s --fix is set, names treats -fix-notes=false and -fix-errors=false as enabled options. If either is the only fix option, the hook omits -fix and clang-tidy applies no fixes. Count only enabled boolean values.

An existing source file named @evil.cpp passes through unchanged. LLVM can interpret it as a response file and read options from evil.cpp instead. For clang-tidy, those options can include --load, which can load attacker-controlled code. Prefix source filenames beginning with @ as well. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
