chore(lifecycle): thin default Info logs for upgrade/install - #516
Keep op boundaries and hard/slow signals at Info (build / schema / web_build, leftover or non-empty schema plans, TX hold ≥100ms or error, PhaseEnd ≥1s).
Debug still surfaces the previous detail (including GORM SQL when enabled); no behavior change beyond log levels.
Test plan
go test ./internal/module/lifecycle/... ./internal/module/artifact/staging/... ./internal/module/evolution/schema/...
Manual: default Info go run . upgrade web auth sandbox partner core — no staging path floods / 0ms skipped scripts; plan/stage/build/completed still visible
Manual: log.level=debug still shows staging commits, migrate, skipped steps
Summary by Sourcery
Reduce default lifecycle log noise while keeping significant operations and failures visible at Info.
Enhancements:
Reduce routine lifecycle, staging, schema, migration, transaction, and phase-end logs from Info to Debug while retaining Info for meaningful work, slow operations, leftovers, and errors.
Preserve detailed lifecycle diagnostics, including skipped-step and staging information, when Debug logging is enabled.
Tests:
Add coverage for log-level thresholds and retention of anomalous, slow, non-empty, and error signals across lifecycle components.
PR Type
Enhancement, Tests
Description
Demote routine lifecycle logs to Debug, keep slow/side-effecting at Info
Staging commits, empty schema plans, base migrate now Debug
Soft steps (hooks/scripts/origin_resolve) Info only when slow and not skipped
Short TX holds and per-module PhaseEnd under 1s demoted to Debug
Go tests added/updated for all new log-level behavior
Routine, short-duration module operations and empty schema plans are logged at Debug level. Longer operations, failed transactions, and schema plans with work to perform remain logged at Info level.
Staging commits and base-module migration completion are logged at Debug level. Phase completion logs include the module and duration, with the log level reflecting how long the operation took.
Build, schema, and web-build steps remain at Info level. Short or skipped hook, script, and origin-resolution steps, along with other lower-priority steps, are logged at Debug level.
Keep op boundaries and slow or side-effecting steps at Info; demote
skipped/fast steps, empty schema plans, staging path commits, and
repeated base migrate completions to Debug for quieter CLI defaults.
This PR thins default lifecycle upgrade/install logs by routing routine, skipped, and fast events to Debug while retaining Info for operation boundaries, hard steps, slow work, non-empty schema changes, errors, and anomalous staging targets; focused tests verify the new content- and duration-based thresholds.

Reduce default Info-level lifecycle noise while preserving visibility for meaningful operations and failures.
Classify hook, script, and origin-resolution steps as Debug when skipped or completing under 100 ms; retain Info for slower non-skipped soft steps.
Keep build, schema, and web-build step logs at Info while demoting repeated base-entity migration completion logs.
Add duration-based logging for aggregate and per-module PhaseEnd, with Info reserved for durations of at least one second.
Demote normal staging directory commits and empty schema plans to Debug, while retaining Info for non-empty plans and warnings for anomalous staging targets.
Keep transaction-hold errors at Info and promote holds lasting at least 100 ms; shorter successful holds become Debug.

The changes adjust log levels for artifact staging, schema planning, and module lifecycle operations. Empty schema plans and selected short or skipped lifecycle operations log at Debug. Failed transaction holds remain at Info. Phase-end completion uses a shared duration threshold and includes module-specific logging.
Successful transaction holds use Info at or above 100 ms and Debug below it; failed holds log at Info. Selected lifecycle steps use duration and skipped attributes to choose their level. Base-module migration completion logs at Debug.
Phase-end logging uses a shared one-second Info threshold. Install and upgrade completion call a module-specific logger that records the module and duration.
The current logging behavior is unchanged, but the new tests should assert exact counts before relying on this coverage.

Explanation
The title "chore(lifecycle): thin default Info logs for upgrade/install" matches the main change. The diff demotes routine lifecycle, staging, schema, migration, and transaction-hold logs from Info to Debug while keeping slow, errored, or state-changing signals at Info. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional-commit style. It does not list every file, which is acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template, which has no required section headings. It explains the change clearly: which logs move to Debug, which stay at Info, and the thresholds used (100 ms for transaction holds, 1 s for PhaseEnd). It lists the test command and includes a test plan. Two manual checks remain unchecked, and the description does not state a test result for the new tests beyond the package run. These gaps do not make the description incomplete.

moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration is defined in upgrader.go and is named for operation steps, but it is now reused as the threshold for transaction-hold logging. Coupling these two unrelated concerns means a future tweak to step logging silently changes tx-hold verbosity; introduce a dedicated constant (e.g. moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration) in this file.
- if duration >= moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration {+ if duration >= moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration {
logger.Info(msg, attrs...)
return
}
logger.Debug(msg, attrs...)
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: Reusing moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration for tx-hold logging does couple two unrelated concerns, and a dedicated constant would improve clarity. However, it is a maintainability nit rather than a correctness issue, and the improved_code references a constant not shown as defined.
Low
Derive short duration from threshold constant
The test relies on a hard-coded 42ms being below moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration (100ms); if that threshold is lowered the test breaks for the wrong reason. Derive the short duration from the constant so the test tracks the contract.
- LogModuleCommitTxHold(infoLogger, "upgrade", "module_commit", time.Now().Add(-42*time.Millisecond), nil)+ LogModuleCommitTxHold(infoLogger, "upgrade", "module_commit", time.Now().Add(-moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration/2), nil)
if infoBuf.Len() != 0 {
t.Fatalf("short hold must stay Debug at Info level, got %q", infoBuf.String())
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: Deriving the short duration from the threshold constant makes the test track the contract rather than a magic 42ms value, improving robustness. It is a test-maintainability improvement with limited impact.
Low
Possible bug
Harden skipped-flag detection against malformed extras
extrasIndicateSkipped assumes extra is a flat key/value slice. If a caller ever passes a non-string key (or a slog.Attr), the i += 2 stride desynchronizes and subsequent pairs are misread, so a skipped=true may be missed and a skipped step logged at Info. Guard the stride by advancing past the value only when the key is a string, otherwise advance by one.
func extrasIndicateSkipped(extra []any) bool {
- for i := 0; i+1 < len(extra); i += 2 {+ for i := 0; i < len(extra); i++ {
key, ok := extra[i].(string)
- if !ok || key != "skipped" {+ if !ok || key != "skipped" || i+1 >= len(extra) {
continue
}
if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {
return true
}
+ i++
}
return false
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The extrasIndicateSkipped helper is only called with extra slices built internally as flat key/value pairs, so the desync scenario is largely theoretical. The change is a defensive hardening with marginal real impact, though it is technically sound.
Low
Performance
Resolve logger once before branching
m.runtimeScope.Logger() is invoked twice; if the scope lazily builds or wraps a logger this is wasted work and could theoretically yield different handlers. Capture it once into a local variable before branching.
Why: Calling m.runtimeScope.Logger() twice is a minor inefficiency; capturing it once is a reasonable readability improvement but has negligible performance impact and no correctness concern.

**Fast uninstall hooks disappear at Info**
When an uninstall hook completes in under 100 ms and logging is configured at Info, `moduleUninstaller.runUninstallHookPhase` uses the shared `logModuleOperationStep`, so uninstall hooks under 100 ms are emitted at Debug and disappear from default Info logs. Callers lose the per-hook completion records even though the stated scope is upgrade/install.
Pass the operation type into the level decision and limit this demotion to the intended install/upgrade operations, or explicitly include uninstall in the logging policy.

**Fast-step tests depend on scheduling**
When the test process is descheduled for roughly 60ms between creating the start time and the helper calculating elapsed time, `TestLogModuleCommitTxHoldShortHoldIsDebug` and `TestLogModuleOperationStep_HookSubstepAttrs` can fail with the correct implementation: their real-clock start times are only 42ms and 40ms below the 100ms threshold, so a sufficiently long scheduling pause makes the helpers correctly emit INFO and the DEBUG assertions fail.
Use a deterministic duration/clock seam for these level assertions instead of relying on elapsed wall time.

**Info regressions pass these tests**
When a normal staging commit or empty schema plan emits both DEBUG and INFO, `TestLogDirStagingCommit_Level` and `TestLogPlan_LevelByContent` only check that DEBUG appears, so an added INFO record alongside DEBUG still passes; routine commits or empty plans can therefore continue flooding default Info logs unnoticed.
Assert that the normal-commit and empty-plan logs contain no INFO record.

**Incorrect durations pass assertions**
When either helper emits an incorrect `duration_ms` value while still including the expected message and attributes, `TestLogModuleCommitTxHoldEmitsDuration` and `TestLogInstallOuterTxHoldEmitsDuration` only search for the `duration_ms` key, so a logger that always records zero (or another incorrect value) still passes despite the 150ms start time.
Parse the JSON log and assert that `duration_ms` is a plausible nonzero value for the supplied start time.

<issue_to_address>
**Hard-step log guidance is misleading**
When a maintainer treats a non-soft step such as `base_entity_migrate` as a hard step, `moduleOperationStepLogLevel` falls through to Debug for `base_entity_migrate`, and its test expects Debug, so the comment incorrectly tells maintainers that this step logs at Info.
Clarify that only build, schema, and web_build are always Info, or otherwise define which steps the comment calls hard.
</issue_to_address>
This test relies on wall-clock elapsed time and only asserts duration_ms >= floor, so it can't detect a regression where the wrapper stops honoring started (e.g. always logging time.Since(time.Now())). Assert an upper bound too, so the measured duration is pinned to the injected started value.
// Public wrapper still uses wall clock; pin via started far enough past the Info floor.
LogInstallOuterTxHold(logger, "bootstrap", time.Now().Add(-moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration*2), nil)
+ logs := logBuf.String()+ for _, want := range []string{+ `"msg":"install commit transaction hold completed"`,+ `"caller":"bootstrap"`,+ } {+ if !strings.Contains(logs, want) {+ t.Fatalf("expected %s in logs, got %q", want, logs)+ }+ }+ if ms := mustParseLogDurationMs(t, logs); ms < moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration.Milliseconds() || ms > (moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration*3).Milliseconds() {+ t.Fatalf("duration_ms=%d, want within [%d, %d]", ms, moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration.Milliseconds(), (moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration*3).Milliseconds())+ }+
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: Adding an upper bound would make the test more robust against a regression where started is ignored, but the improved_code duplicates the existing assertion block already present in the test, making it redundant and slightly confusing.

Possible bug
Guard zero duration in helper
The public LogModuleCommitTxHold guards started.IsZero() before computing time.Since, but the extracted helper only checks logger == nil. If a future caller passes a zero started directly (or the guard is refactored away), time.Since(time.Time{}) yields a huge duration and logs a bogus Info line. Move the zero-duration guard into the helper so both paths are protected.
func logModuleCommitTxHold(logger *slog.Logger, op string, caller string, duration time.Duration, err error) {
- if logger == nil {+ if logger == nil || duration <= 0 {
return
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The public wrapper already guards started.IsZero(), and the helper is only called with a computed time.Since. The duration <= 0 guard is defensive but not addressing a real bug in the current code paths; low impact.
Low
Harden skipped-flag detection in extras
extrasIndicateSkipped assumes extra is a flat key/value slice. If any caller passes a non-string key (e.g. a slog.Attr or a nested group), the pairing desynchronizes and a later "skipped" value may be misread. Guard against odd-length slices and treat non-string keys as a single element so pairing stays aligned.
func extrasIndicateSkipped(extra []any) bool {
- for i := 0; i+1 < len(extra); i += 2 {+ for i := 0; i < len(extra); i++ {
key, ok := extra[i].(string)
- if !ok || key != "skipped" {+ if !ok {
continue
}
- if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {- return true+ if key != "skipped" {+ i++ // skip the value paired with a non-target string key+ continue
}
+ if i+1 < len(extra) {+ if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {+ return true+ }+ }+ i++
}
return false
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: The extra slice is always constructed as flat key/value pairs by callers in this PR (e.g. "skipped", true), so the desync scenario is speculative. The proposed rewrite also changes pairing semantics in a way that could itself misalign, offering little real benefit.
Low
Possible issue
Guard nil logger before logging plan
m.runtimeScope.Logger() is dereferenced without a nil check, unlike the other logging helpers in this PR (logFinalizingPhaseEnd, logModuleCommitTxHold) which guard logger == nil. If a scope can be constructed without a logger, this panics during migration planning. Add the same nil guard for consistency and safety.
logger := m.runtimeScope.Logger()
+ if logger == nil {+ return+ }
// Empty plans are noise at default Info; leftover or ops stay visible.
if len(plan.Ops) == 0 && len(plan.Leftover) == 0 {
logger.Debug("schema plan", attrs...)
return
}
logger.Info("schema plan", attrs...)
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: m.runtimeScope.Logger() is expected to always return a valid logger in this codebase; the other helpers guard nil because they accept a logger parameter directly. This is a speculative nil check with low relevance.

This test no longer exercises LogInstallOuterTxHold at all, so a regression in the public wrapper's duration plumbing would go unnoticed. Keep the deterministic helper assertion but also drive the wrapper with a real started in the past and assert the emitted duration_ms is at least the expected floor.
func TestLogInstallOuterTxHoldEmitsDuration(t *testing.T) {
t.Parallel()
var logBuf bytes.Buffer
logger := slog.New(slog.NewJSONHandler(&logBuf, &slog.HandlerOptions{Level: slog.LevelInfo}))
- // Deterministic duration path (same helper LogInstallOuterTxHold wraps).- logModuleCommitTxHold(logger, "install", "bootstrap", 150*time.Millisecond, nil)+ LogInstallOuterTxHold(logger, "bootstrap", time.Now().Add(-150*time.Millisecond), nil)+ logs := logBuf.String()+ for _, want := range []string{+ `"msg":"install commit transaction hold completed"`,+ `"caller":"bootstrap"`,+ } {+ if !strings.Contains(logs, want) {+ t.Fatalf("expected %s in logs, got %q", want, logs)+ }+ }+ if ms := mustParseLogDurationMs(t, logs); ms < 150 {+ t.Fatalf("duration_ms=%d, want >= 150", ms)+ }+}+
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 5
__
Why: The test was changed to call the internal helper directly, so the public LogInstallOuterTxHold wrapper's duration plumbing is no longer covered by this test. A separate delegation test exists, but adding a wrapper-level duration assertion would improve coverage of the public API.
Low
Possible bug
Guard zero duration in helper
LogModuleCommitTxHold guards against a zero started, but the extracted helper drops that guard, so a zero duration (or a negative one from clock skew) would be logged at Debug instead of being skipped. Move the zero-duration check into the helper so both entry points share it.
func logModuleCommitTxHold(logger *slog.Logger, op string, caller string, duration time.Duration, err error) {
- if logger == nil {+ if logger == nil || duration <= 0 {
return
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The public LogModuleCommitTxHold already guards started.IsZero(), so the helper is only reached with a valid duration from that path. Adding a duration <= 0 guard is a minor defensive hardening, but it could also suppress legitimate zero-duration logs from direct helper callers. Low impact.
Low
Harden skipped-flag attribute scan
The pair-wise scan assumes extra is a well-formed key/value slice; a single odd element (or a non-string key) silently shifts pairing and can hide a skipped flag, letting a skipped step log at Info. Bail out early when len(extra)%2 != 0 so malformed attrs are treated as not-skipped deterministically.
func extrasIndicateSkipped(extra []any) bool {
+ if len(extra)%2 != 0 {+ return false+ }
for i := 0; i+1 < len(extra); i += 2 {
key, ok := extra[i].(string)
if !ok || key != "skipped" {
continue
}
if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {
return true
}
}
return false
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: The extra slice is always constructed as key/value pairs by internal callers, so an odd-length slice is not a realistic scenario. The early bail-out is harmless but offers negligible correctness benefit and could mask a skipped flag if it appeared after an odd element.
Low
Possible issue
Guard nil logger in schema plan
m.runtimeScope.Logger() can be nil in partially constructed scopes, and the new code calls it unconditionally before any nil check (the previous code had the same risk but the new early-return path makes it easier to hit in tests/edge wiring). Add a nil guard so a missing logger degrades to a no-op instead of panicking during migration.
logger := m.runtimeScope.Logger()
+ if logger == nil {+ return+ }
// Empty plans are noise at default Info; leftover or ops stay visible.
if len(plan.Ops) == 0 && len(plan.Leftover) == 0 {
logger.Debug("schema plan", attrs...)
return
}
logger.Info("schema plan", attrs...)
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: The previous code also called m.runtimeScope.Logger() unconditionally, so this is not a regression introduced by the PR. A nil logger from a properly constructed scope is unlikely, making this a speculative hardening with minimal impact.
This test no longer exercises LogInstallOuterTxHold at all — it calls the internal helper directly, so a regression in the public wrapper (e.g. wrong op/caller mapping) would not be caught here. Keep the deterministic duration assertion but drive it through the public function, or assert the wrapper's op/caller mapping explicitly.
func TestLogInstallOuterTxHoldEmitsDuration(t *testing.T) {
t.Parallel()
var logBuf bytes.Buffer
logger := slog.New(slog.NewJSONHandler(&logBuf, &slog.HandlerOptions{Level: slog.LevelInfo}))
// Deterministic duration path (same helper LogInstallOuterTxHold wraps).
logModuleCommitTxHold(logger, "install", "bootstrap", 150*time.Millisecond, nil)
+ logs := logBuf.String()+ for _, want := range []string{+ `"msg":"install commit transaction hold completed"`,+ `"caller":"bootstrap"`,+ `"op":"install"`,+ } {+ if !strings.Contains(logs, want) {+ t.Fatalf("expected %s in logs, got %q", want, logs)+ }+ }+ if ms := mustParseLogDurationMs(t, logs); ms != 150 {+ t.Fatalf("duration_ms=%d, want 150", ms)+ }+}+
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 5
__
Why: The test now calls the internal helper directly, so the public LogInstallOuterTxHold wrapper's op/caller mapping is no longer asserted in this test. However, a separate TestLogInstallOuterTxHoldDelegatesToModuleHold was added that does exercise the wrapper, so the gap is partially covered.
Low
Possible bug
Nil-guard logger before logging schema plan
*m.runtimeScope.Logger() may return nil (the other logging helpers in this PR all nil-guard the logger). Calling Debug/Info on a nil slog.Logger panics, so add the same guard here for consistency and safety.
logger := m.runtimeScope.Logger()
+ if logger == nil {+ return+ }
// Empty plans are noise at default Info; leftover or ops stay visible.
if len(plan.Ops) == 0 && len(plan.Leftover) == 0 {
logger.Debug("schema plan", attrs...)
return
}
logger.Info("schema plan", attrs...)
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 4
__
Why: Other logging helpers in this PR nil-guard the logger, so adding a guard is consistent. But m.runtimeScope.Logger() returning nil is unlikely in practice, and the suggestion is a defensive consistency improvement rather than a confirmed bug.
Low
Guard against negative hold durations
LogModuleCommitTxHold guards on started.IsZero() before delegating, but the internal helper only checks logger == nil. A negative duration (clock skew or a caller passing a future started) would silently log at Debug and hide a real anomaly. Clamp or treat non-positive durations explicitly so the level decision is deterministic.
func logModuleCommitTxHold(logger *slog.Logger, op string, caller string, duration time.Duration, err error) {
if logger == nil {
return
}
+ if duration < 0 {+ duration = 0+ }
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: Negative durations are not a realistic concern here since time.Since is monotonic and callers pass real start times; the started.IsZero() guard already handles the main edge case. This is speculative hardening with minimal impact.
Low
Possible issue
Harden skipped-flag detection in extras
extrasIndicateSkipped assumes extra is a flat key/value list, but moduleOperationStepInfoAttrs may append non-string keys or odd-length slices; a non-string key at an even index silently shifts pairing for the rest of the slice. Also, a skipped value that is not a bool (e.g. "true") is ignored. Consider normalizing via slog.Group/slog.Attr or at least documenting the strict pairing contract.
func extrasIndicateSkipped(extra []any) bool {
for i := 0; i+1 < len(extra); i += 2 {
key, ok := extra[i].(string)
- if !ok || key != "skipped" {+ if !ok {+ // Non-string key breaks key/value pairing; stop scanning.+ return false+ }+ if key != "skipped" {
continue
}
if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {
return true
}
}
return false
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The extra slices in this codebase are constructed as flat string/bool pairs, so the pairing concern is largely theoretical. The change is a minor robustness tweak with low real-world impact.
moduleOperationStepLogLevel returns Info when a non-skipped soft step has exactly moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration. The current table tests only durations below and above 100 ms, so a regression to a strict > comparison would pass.

Add a table test for the equality boundary in the tests for
moduleOperationStepLogLevel: use a non-skipped soft step with duration
moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration and expect slog.LevelInfo. Keep the existing
below- and above-threshold cases.
Add an equality-boundary test for the 100 ms hold threshold.
moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration is 100 ms, and successful holds at or above that floor must log at Info. The current tests cover 50 ms and 150 ms, but not exactly 100 ms. A regression from >= to > would therefore pass the existing tests.

Add an equality-boundary test for logModuleCommitTxHold using
moduleCommitTxHoldInfoMinDuration and verify that a hold exactly at the
threshold logs at Info; keep the existing 50 ms and 150 ms coverage unchanged.
Add a level assertion for the base-module migration completion log.
migrateBaseModule emits the completion record with a literal Debug call at internal/module/lifecycle/modulemanager.go:661. No test asserts the level of this record. The only level test for this step checks moduleOperationStepLogLevel(moduleStepBaseEntityMigrate). That function governs the per-step upgrade log, not this call. If someone changes line 661 to Info, the existing tests still pass.
Add an assertion to a test that runs migrateBaseModule successfully, such as the success case in internal/module/lifecycle/modulemanager_fastfail_test.go:127. Attach a Debug-level capturing handler, following the pattern of the existing lifecycle level tests. Then assert that base module entity migration completed is logged at "level":"DEBUG" and that no "level":"INFO" record appears for it.

In a successful migrateBaseModule test, attach a Debug-level capturing handler

LogModuleCommitTxHold guards started.IsZero() before delegating, but the inner helper only checks logger == nil. Any future direct caller of logModuleCommitTxHold (or a refactor) could log a bogus duration_ms of 0. Mirror the zero-duration guard in the helper so the invariant holds regardless of entry point.
func logModuleCommitTxHold(logger *slog.Logger, op string, caller string, duration time.Duration, err error) {
- if logger == nil {+ if logger == nil || duration == 0 {
return
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 3
__
Why: The public wrapper already guards started.IsZero(), and the new tests explicitly call logModuleCommitTxHold with 10*time.Millisecond and time.Millisecond, so a zero-duration guard is not required for correctness. It is a minor defensive hardening for hypothetical future direct callers, with low impact.
Low
Harden skipped-attr detection
extrasIndicateSkipped assumes extra is a well-formed key/value slice. If a caller passes an odd-length slice, the trailing element is silently ignored and the pairing of subsequent attrs is already broken. Consider documenting/asserting the even-length contract or scanning defensively so a malformed extra cannot silently downgrade a real step to Debug.
func extrasIndicateSkipped(extra []any) bool {
- for i := 0; i+1 < len(extra); i += 2 {+ for i := 0; i < len(extra); i++ {
key, ok := extra[i].(string)
- if !ok || key != "skipped" {+ if !ok || key != "skipped" || i+1 >= len(extra) {
continue
}
if skipped, ok := extra[i+1].(bool); ok && skipped {
return true
}
}
return false
}
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: The proposed rewrite changes iteration from stepping by 2 to stepping by 1, which would mis-pair keys and values and could produce incorrect results. The original even-length pairing is the correct contract for slog-style attrs, so this suggestion is not an improvement.
Low
Guard nil logger in logPlan
m.runtimeScope.Logger() may return nil in some test/edge scopes; the previous code called Info directly on it too, but now the nil check is still absent. Add a nil guard so a missing logger cannot panic during migration planning.
logger := m.runtimeScope.Logger()
+ if logger == nil {+ return+ }
// Empty plans are noise at default Info; leftover or ops stay visible.
if len(plan.Ops) == 0 && len(plan.Leftover) == 0 {
logger.Debug("schema plan", attrs...)
return
}
logger.Info("schema plan", attrs...)
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: The previous code also called m.runtimeScope.Logger().Info(...) without a nil check, so this PR does not introduce a new nil-dereference risk. Adding a guard is speculative and not tied to a demonstrated failure path.

Possible bug
Verify all callers updated
The new signature moduleOperationStepLogLevel(step, duration, extra...) is a breaking change for any other callers in the package (e.g. tests or future call sites). Confirm all call sites were updated; if any external/package-level callers exist, keep a thin wrapper or update them in this PR to avoid compile breakage.
if moduleOperationStepIsSoft(step) {
if extrasIndicateSkipped(extra) || duration < moduleOperationStepInfoMinDuration {
return slog.LevelDebug
}
return slog.LevelInfo
}
+ return slog.LevelDebug
Suggestion importance[1-10]: 2
__
Why: This is a verification request rather than a concrete fix, and the improved_code is identical to the existing snippet. The PR diff shows the only call site (logModuleOperationStep) and tests were updated, so there is no actionable change here.
