Orange Ecosystem Map

The Orange Ecosystem Map is an interactive, force-directed network visualization of the Bitcoin open-source developer ecosystem.

This repository serves exclusively as the frontend application. It renders high-performance visualizations using processed JSON data provided by our backend data pipeline: orange-eco-data.

📊 Insights & Visualizations

The Bitcoin ecosystem is vast, decentralized, and constantly evolving. This visualization is designed to answer critical questions about the health and structure of Bitcoin's development:

  • Ecosystem Clustering: Discover how projects naturally group together. See the orbits of Lightning Network infrastructure, Layer 2 scaling solutions, Wallets, and core protocol development.
  • Developer Cross-Pollination: Understand how talent flows through the ecosystem. The map highlights which projects share the most contributors, revealing hidden dependencies and collaborative hubs.
  • Project Gravity & Health: Instantly identify the "anchor" projects that attract the most developer mindshare and network activity.

🗺️ How to Read the Map

The visualization is built on a force-directed graph where physical proximity and visual weight indicate relationships and activity:

  • Nodes (Circles) represent Repositories: The size of a node indicates its activity level (a combination of contributor count, commit velocity, and community engagement).
  • Edges (Lines) represent Shared Developers: A line between two projects means they share contributors. The thicker and brighter the line, the higher the developer overlap.
  • Colors & Clusters represent Domains: Repositories are algorithmically clustered into sub-ecosystems (e.g., Core/Protocol, Lightning, Wallets, L2/Sidechains). Projects that pull developers from multiple clusters act as "bridges" and sit in the center of the map.
  • Interactive Exploration: You can zoom, pan, hover over nodes for detailed statistics, and use the sidebar filters to isolate specific segments of the Bitcoin economy.

🏗️ Architecture

To keep things clean and performant, we strictly separate data processing from data presentation:

  1. Frontend Only: This repository contains zero data processing logic. It is a pure HTML/CSS/JS web application served directly via GitHub Pages from the docs/ directory.
  2. Dynamic Data Fetching: When a user loads the map, the application dynamically fetches the latest graph_export.json directly from the main branch of the orange-eco-data repository.
  3. No Heavy Dependencies: The visualization is built using lightweight, vanilla JavaScript and D3.js (or similar graphing libraries) to ensure fast load times even with thousands of nodes.

💻 Local Environment

To run this visualization locally, you must have the orange-eco-data repository cloned as a sibling directory. The frontend code uses an isLocal flag and relies on a symlink (docs/output -> ../../orange-eco-data/output) to fetch the latest graph data during local development.
