Document cuvs module breakage in Solr 10.1 - #5182
Conversation
…10.1 cuvs-lucene 25.12 is not compatible with Lucene 10.4, which Solr 10.1 uses. Advise GPU users to skip 10.1 and stay on 10.0.x until a later 10.x release fixes it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>

| Vector indexing with GPU acceleration does not work in Solr 10.1 (SOLR-18556), because the bundled cuVS-Lucene library (25.12) is not compatible with Lucene 10.4. | ||
| If you use GPU acceleration, skip Solr 10.1 and stay on Solr 10.0.x. |

I think we can skip 1048-1049 because we already point to the major changes doc.

@sigram Thanks for taking a look. I have made some changes to remove duplication.

Looks fine. Maybe reference your jira "for updates"? Also don't want to suggest that you can fix things yourself whe t why make their release?
@epugh Thanks for taking a look. Referenced JIRA for updates in the upgrade doc. About users being able to drop in the jar for a fix at a later point, I thought about your suggestion but feel it might be "safer" to suggest to the users to just wait out a release instead of us promising a drop-in replacement of the library to work without tests running on Solr 10.1. What do you think? |

Description
This is a PR for doc changes in Solr 10 upgrade guide about breakage in cuvs module in Solr 10.1. A JIRA tracking the issue has been created at https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-18556.
GPU accelerated indexing using "cuvs" module breaks on Solr 10.1. This is due to certain incompatibilities in the cuvs-lucene library with Lucene 10.4 which backs Solr 10.1.
The maintainers are aware of the breakage, and the fix supporting several Lucene versions till Lucene 10.5 (and potentially Lucene 10.6 (unreleased as of this ticket creation)) is expected to be available in Dec 2026 with the release of cuvs-lucene v26.12.
Additionally, to minimize the possibility of similar breakages in the future, the maintainers have also shared that they plan to have cuvs-lucene releases every 2 months to keep up with the latest released Lucene versions starting with v26.12.
