NTEE pages inside the site: browse table, lookup tables guide, resource page rewrite - #103
Conversation
…ce page rewrite - /datasets/ntee/browse/: the crosswalk table as a site page (header, nav, footer), major-group pills, one search box, click a row for the full definition, live from the lookups bucket. - /datasets/lookups/: plain-language guide to the 17 BMF lookup tables, what each means and where it applies, row counts and vintage from the manifest, one download per table. - Resources > NTEE rewritten around three tasks (find a code, download the list, understand NTEE version 2); reading list collapsed. - Old widget URL redirects to the browse page. | **Finding your code.** It is in the IRS [Exempt Organizations Business Master File](https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-business-master-file-extract-eo-bmf), or [search our table](../../datasets/ntee/browse/) to read what each code means. | ||

| Please note that the NCCS was involved in the creation of the NTEE system, but **we do not make initial assignment of codes** nor do we **have the ability to make an official update to IRS records**. | ||
| **Choosing a code** when you apply for exemption: [browse the full list](../../datasets/ntee/browse/) or use the [two-page cheat sheet](../../pubs/ntee-two-page-2005.pdf). Pick the code that best describes your main activity; there is no penalty for a near miss, and it can be changed later. |

| Nonprofits are assigned an NTEE code during the application process for tax-exempt status. The IRS issues and maintains the official database of NTEE codes. You can look up your official NTEE code in the [IRS 990 Business Master File](https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/exempt-organizations-business-master-file-extract-eo-bmf). |

We should still make it clear that we are not responsible for incorrect NTEE codes. We neither assign nor have the capability to change them. Nonprofits with issues must reach out to the IRS. Secondly (and for a separate task and PR. Would it be worth adding functionality for a nonprofit to retrieve its latest NTEE code from this site?)
… sheet link The May 2005 two-page sheet lacks 27 codes the IRS assigns today, so the guide points at the live list instead. Disclaimer made explicit per review. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <[email protected]>

Both review points handled in the latest commit. Cheat sheet. Verified: the PDF is the May 2005 NTEE-CC list. It has 619 codes; the current IRS list has 645. It lacks 27 codes the IRS assigns today (E6A, K2A-K2C, K6A-K6F, K90-K98, L4A, L4B, M19, N2A, N2B, P76, P7A, P83) and includes Z99, which is not an IRS code. So it is outdated. The guide no longer links it and says why; the file stays in Responsibility. The "For nonprofits" section now opens with a call-out: NCCS does not assign, correct, or change NTEE codes; the IRS is the only body that can; contact the IRS if a code is wrong; NCCS is not responsible for codes that are incorrect in IRS records or in data published from them. The "what an NTEE code is" section already said we cannot assign or change codes; this makes it impossible to miss. Looking up your own code on this site. Worth doing, and cheap: the geocoded Unified BMF is public, so a small page could take an EIN or name and return the organization's current NTEE code, ruling year and the IRS wording, read live the same way the table is. The catch is size (the BMF is 3.6 GB, so the lookup would need a per-EIN endpoint or a DuckDB-on-parquet query, which is where the sector-in-brief API rewrite is heading under ADR 0026). Suggest a backlog row in nccs-contracts so it gets a shape decision rather than a one-off; I will add it when I next touch the backlog unless you want it now. |
Follows the maintainer's three choices of 2026-09-21 after reviewing the first version: table as a site page, resource page rewritten around three tasks, plain-language lookups page in place of the raw manifest link.
New pages (both inside the site layout, both read the lookup bucket live when opened):
/datasets/ntee/browse/: the crosswalk table. Major groups as clickable pills, one search box, click a description to open the full definition, download button, vintage stamp from the manifest. Any stray markup in the data is stripped before display./datasets/lookups/: all 17 BMF lookup tables explained in plain words (what the codes mean, which BMF column they decode), row count per table from the manifest, one download link each, and a short section on how to read the manifest. Column names checked against the Unified BMF data dictionary.Resource page (
_resources/ntee.md): rewritten around three tasks. Three primary links instead of six. Sections: what an NTEE code is; for nonprofits (find, choose, change a code); for data users (the code list, NTEE version 2 with the industry/type tables folded away, the accuracy caveat); other taxonomies. The 30-item reading list is kept but collapsed. Contributors unchanged.Dataset page (
_datasets/ntee.md): links now point at the browse page and the lookups page; the raw manifest link is gone.Old widget URL
widgets/ntee_tables/ntee-naics_table.htmlredirects to the browse page.Previewed locally by wrapping the pages in the live site shell (Jekyll cannot run on this machine); CI build passes. The one remaining markup glitch in the data (A69) is fixed on the producer side in nccs-data-bmf #57.
