Fix dual-ownership race in shared_mutex::try_lock - #7874
Fixed a dual-ownership race condition in shared_mutex::try_lock() and shared_mutex::lock().
Added a check for s.data.upgrade to both methods to ensure an external thread cannot steal the exclusive lock while an upgrading thread is in the middle of lock promotion.
Any background context you want to provide?
By failing to check s.data.upgrade, both try_lock() and lock() left a vulnerability where an external thread could claim the exclusive lock exactly when the upgrading thread dropped the final read lock (shared_count == 0, exclusive == false, upgrade == true). Because the upgrading thread's unlock_upgrade_and_lock() loop blindly overwrites the state with exclusive = true upon waking, both threads would concurrently mutate the protected data. Checking upgrade in both functions correctly closes this window.
Checklist
I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Exclusive lock acquisition now waits while an upgrade lock is held, and non-blocking exclusive attempts fail in that situation. Competing lock requests now respect exclusive ownership.
Tests
Added regression coverage for concurrent upgrade-lock promotion, blocking exclusive acquisition, and non-blocking exclusive attempts, with checks that exclusive ownership remains unique.
shared_mutex_data::lock and try_lock now treat an active upgrade lock as a blocker. A new regression test exercises upgrade promotion and exclusive acquisition concurrently.

lock waits when an upgrade lock is active. try_lock returns false when an upgrade lock is active.
The regression test runs upgrade promotion, blocking lock, and try_lock concurrently. It checks that exclusive ownership does not overlap. CMake registers the test with four threads per locality.
#7873 describes the same promotion race and missing upgrade-state check in try_lock.

Explanation
Issue #7873 requires shared_mutex::try_lock() to reject acquisition when shared_count, exclusive, or upgrade is set. The change adds s.data.upgrade to the try_lock() condition. It also adds the same guard to lock(), which prevents the related blocking-acquisition race. The new shared_mutex_dual_ownership regression test exercises upgrade promotion, lock(), and try_lock() and checks for concurrent exclusive ownership. The test is registered in the regression test CMake file.

Block lock() while an upgrade lock is in transition.
The new check protects try_lock(), but lock() still treats shared_count == 0 and exclusive == false as available. During unlock_upgrade_and_lock(), that state is published while upgrade == true. A concurrent lock() can then set exclusive, and the upgrader can later set it as well, preserving dual ownership.
Include s.data.upgrade in this condition.

Thanks, the analysis is correct. unlock_upgrade_and_lock() first drops its shared count while keeping upgrade set, so for a moment the state is shared_count == 0, exclusive == false, upgrade == true. Without the new check both try_lock() and lock() take the exclusive lock in that window, and the upgrading thread then sets exclusive again on top of it, since its wait loop only checks shared_count. Checking upgrade in both functions closes the window: while it is set, the only way to get to exclusive is the hand-over in unlock_shared() or the upgrading thread itself. A blocked lock() is woken by release_waiters() once the upgraded lock is released, as before.
Two requests before this can go in:
The checklist says a regression test was added, but the PR only changes the header. Please add one, e.g. next to tests/regressions/shared_mutex_6854.cpp: some tasks loop over lock_upgrade(), unlock_upgrade_and_lock(), unlock(), others over lock()/unlock() and try_lock()/unlock(), and every exclusive section checks that it is the only owner (HPX_TEST_EQ(owners.fetch_add(1), 0) on entry, owners.fetch_sub(1) on exit). It should fail without this change.
Please mention the lock() change in the PR description as well; at the moment it only talks about try_lock().

The regression test has been added and verified, and the PR description is updated to cover both the lock() and try_lock() changes.
38-38: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Heavy lift
Coordinate the promotion interval in the regression test.
The test launches lock() and try_lock() asynchronously, but it does not pause unlock_upgrade_and_lock() after it publishes shared_count == 0 and before it clears upgrade. The previous implementation can complete promotion before either competing operation runs. The ownership assertion can then pass without detecting the race.
Add a test-only synchronization point in that interval, then attempt both acquisitions while promotion is paused. The hook must not change production lock-state behavior.

Thanks for adding the test. The fix itself is unchanged and still looks right to me.
I ran the new test locally (Windows, MSVC, --hpx:threads=4, 30 runs each): with this change it passed all 30 runs; with master's shared_mutex.hpp it caught the double ownership in 4 of 30 runs (in all three task groups: lock(), try_lock() and the upgrading tasks). So it does detect the race, but only now and then. A pause point inside unlock_upgrade_and_lock(), as CodeRabbit suggests, would make it deterministic, but I'd rather not add test hooks to the lock itself. If a run stays short enough, raising iterations (e.g. to 5000; one run takes about 1.5 s here now) would make a regression more likely to show up in CI.

I've bumped the iterations to 5000 to ensure the race is caught more deterministically in CI without needing internal hooks.
