algorithms: do not require *first convertible to T in parallel reduce - #7869
Carry a size-1 partition as an iterator to the element instead of constructing T from *part_begin.
Start partitions of size >= 2 with binary_op(*first, *next).
Fold both kinds of partition result with binary_op(init, ...).
Add test_reduce_minmax_not_convertible_to_T to libs/core/algorithms/tests/unit/algorithms/reduce_.cpp.
Any background context you want to provide?
Parallel hpx::reduce started every partition with T val = *part_begin, which requires the value type to be convertible to T. The standard does not require that (https://eel.is/c++draft/reduce#5), so valid reductions such as minmax into pair<int, int> failed to compile.
Size-1 partitions now carry the element iterator; partitions of size >= 2 start with binary_op(*first, *next). The final fold applies binary_op(init, ...) to both, which the standard already requires. This follows the smaller approach @hkaiser described when closing #6877 (no new chunk-size CPO).
Regression coverage is in reduce_.cpp (minmax over several elements, a single element, and an empty range). It fails to compile without the fix and passes with it at --hpx:threads=1 and 4. Existing reduce__test still passes.
Checklist
I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.
Parallel reduce started each partition with T val = *part_begin, but the
standard never requires the value type to be convertible to T (see TheHPXProject#6647).
That rejected valid uses such as a minmax reduction whose accumulator is
pair<int, int>. Size-1 partitions now carry the element iterator instead,
size >= 2 partitions start with binary_op(*first, *next), and the final
fold applies binary_op(init, ...) to both kinds of result. Matches the
approach hkaiser outlined when closing TheHPXProject#6877.

Improved parallel reductions for single-element partitions and operations whose results use a different type than the input elements.
Preserved correct sums when the initial value uses a wider type than the input elements, including sums that exceed the input type’s range.
Supported non-const operations in parallel reductions and move-only accumulators in sequential reductions.
Tests
Added coverage for parallel reductions over multi-element, single-element, and empty ranges, wider initial values, non-const operations, and move-only accumulators.
reduce now supports parallel reduction when input elements are not convertible to the accumulator type. Sequential reduction uses an optional accumulator for non-vector-pack execution policies. Tests cover non-convertible operands, wider initial values, non-const operations, and move-constructible accumulators.

Summary
Handle accumulator and partition results libs/core/algorithms/include/hpx/parallel/algorithms/reduce.hpp
Sequential reduction updates an optional accumulator. Parallel reduction uses an iterator-backed result for a one-element partition when input elements are not convertible to the accumulator type.
Tests cover pair-based reduction on multiple, single-element, and empty ranges; wider long long accumulation; a non-const operation; and sequential reduction with a move-constructible accumulator. The tests are called from hpx_main.
Parallel reduction still rejects valid non-assignable accumulators. Address this limitation before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#6647] The parallel reduce implementation no longer requires conversion of an input element to T on the non-convertible path. A size-1 partition stores its iterator in reduce_single_element. A larger partition starts with HPX_INVOKE(r, *part_begin, *std::next(part_begin)). The final fold invokes r with init and each partition result or referenced element. test_reduce_minmax_not_convertible_to_T covers multiple elements, one element, and an empty range with std::pair<int, int> as T.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production changes remain in reduce.hpp and support the same reduction requirements. The optional accumulator changes remove assignment requirements during the refactor. The added tests cover the reported conversion case and affected behavior for wider initial values, non-const operations, and non-assignable accumulators. No unrelated production code or unrelated tests appear in the diff.

Seeding with r(*first, *next) overflows in the element type: reduce(par, ints, 0LL) over four INT_MAX gives -4. Could we keep the old path when *first converts to T and use the new one only otherwise?
Keep the original T val = *part_begin partition path when the value
type converts to T, so reduce(par, ints, 0LL) over INT_MAX no longer
overflows in the element type (RohanOnKeys). Use the iterator/variant
path only when *first is not convertible to T (TheHPXProject#6647). Make both
partition and fold lambdas mutable so non-const binary_ops still
compile, and pass the accumulator and T partition results as lvalues
(CodeRabbit).

The final fold copied init into the accumulator (T acc = init) and
into sequential_reduce by value. The reduction contract only requires
T to be MoveConstructible, so use HPX_MOVE(init) in both the
convertible and non-convertible parallel paths (CodeRabbit).

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Do not require T to be MoveAssignable.
The final fold assigns results with acc = ... in both branches. This requires a copy or move assignment operator. The reduce contract requires T to be MoveConstructible, so a valid non-copyable, non-move-assignable accumulator fails to compile. (eel.is)
Replace the accumulator by constructing a new T for each step instead of assigning into acc. Add a compile test with deleted assignment operators.

The final fold assigned into the accumulator with operator=, which
requires MoveAssignable. The reduce contract only requires
MoveConstructible. Replace the accumulator via std::optional::emplace
in both the sequential path and the parallel final folds (convertible
and non-convertible). Pass *acc as an lvalue into the binary op.
Add a regression test with deleted copy/move assignment operators.

Remove the remaining assignment requirement in parallel partitions.
If T has deleted assignment operators and a parallel partition contains multiple elements, detail::sequential_reduce<ExPolicy> still assigns each result to its accumulator. Both partition paths therefore fail to compile for an accumulator supported by the new seq test. Update partition reduction to reconstruct its accumulator, and exercise par with reduce_non_assignable_acc. The partition helper’s assignment is at libs/core/algorithms/include/hpx/parallel/algorithms/detail/reduce.hpp, Lines 37–40. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The MoveAssignable optional::emplace rewrite in sequential reduce
fed SIMD packs straight into the accumulator, so
acc.emplace(r(*acc, wide<T>)) failed to compile for reduce_datapar.
Route vectorpack policies back through sequential_reduce (which
reduces packs to T first). Also construct the next accumulator value
before emplace in the sequential and final-fold paths so a binary_op
that returns a reference into *acc cannot observe a destroyed object.

Use a non-identity initial value in the one-element minmax check.
{INT_MAX, INT_MIN} is the identity for this minmax fold. With the element 7, the result is {7, 7} whether or not the parallel path combines init. A regression that drops the caller's initial value on the new singleton path would still pass. Use {0, 3} as the initial value and expect {0, 7}. The result is {0, 7} only when both init and the element contribute.
