Explanation
[
#7842] The issue lists three coding requirements. All three are implemented at head f3b8b40.-
Make
signalling_thread_atomic and read it with acquire ordering.stop_token.hppdeclaresstd::atomic<hpx::threads::thread_id_type> signalling_thread_{hpx::threads::invalid_thread_id}.stop_token.cpp(remove_callback) reads it withload(std::memory_order_acquire). The write inrequest_stop()uses the default seq_cst store. This fixes the unsynchronized read. -
Prevent
invalid_thread_idfrom matching the signalling thread.remove_callbacknow computesself_id = get_self_id()and takes the self-signalling branch only whenself_id != invalid_thread_id && signalling_thread_.load(acquire) == self_id. OS threads (self_id == invalid_thread_id) take the spin-wait branch. This removes the false bypass described in the issue. -
Make
thread_idtrivially copyable. Inthread_id_type.hpp, the user-provided move constructor and move assignment are replaced by= default. The copy operations and destructor were already defaulted, and the class holds only avoid*. The class is therefore trivially copyable, which permitsstd::atomicuse.
Gap noted: the PR checklist marks a regression test as added. The reviewed diff contains only the three source files (
thread_id_type.hpp,stop_token.hpp,stop_token.cpp). No test file appears in the diff.#7842does not state a test requirement, so this does not change the verdict. I did not verify thethread_id_typealias target by inspection. The atomic declaration relies on it beingthread_id, as the PR description states. -

Explanation
The diff touches only three files, and each maps to an issue requirement in
#7842.stop_token.cpp: adds theinvalid_thread_idguard and the acquire load inremove_callback. This implements requirement 2.stop_token.hpp: makessignalling_thread_atomic with aninvalid_thread_idinitializer. This implements requirement 1.thread_id_type.hpp: defaults the move constructor and move assignment. This implements requirement 3.
No unrelated code changes appear in the diff.
Residual behavior change: a moved-from
thread_idnow keeps its pointer. The old move operations set the source to null. Any trivially copyablethread_idmust have a non-nulling move, so this change follows from requirement 3. I did not search the repository for callers that rely on a moved-fromthread_idbeing null. This is a risk to review, not an out-of-scope change.

Keep self-removal working for callbacks run on non-HPX threads.
When request_stop() runs on an OS thread, signalling_thread_ holds invalid_thread_id. A callback that destroys its own stop_callback then takes the wait branch in remove_callback. That branch waits for callback_finished_executing_, which request_stop() sets only after the callback returns. The callback cannot return while its destructor waits, so the thread can wait indefinitely.
Before this change, the invalid == invalid match took the self-removal branch. It set *cb->is_removed_, and request_stop() then skipped the wait. The new guard removes that path for OS threads.
Keep the guard's protection against false matches. Record the identity of the thread that runs request_stop() in a form that is valid for OS threads as well as HPX threads. Compare against that identity in the self-removal check. Do not let the callback destructor wait for its own invocation. The fix must still prevent a different OS thread from matching.

Thanks, but this is the same problem as #7788, which #7798 already fixes, and this PR's fix trades the use-after-free for a deadlock. With this PR a non-HPX thread never takes the "this is the signalling thread" branch in The other two changes aren't needed. There is no data race on Also, the checklist says a regression test was added, but the PR doesn't add one. I'd suggest closing this PR and #7842 as duplicates of #7798 and #7788. |
Fixes #7842
Proposed Changes
stop_state::remove_callback.signalling_thread_as anstd::atomic<hpx::threads::thread_id_type>and replaced unsynchronized reads withstd::memory_order_acquire.invalid_thread_id) do not falsely trigger the recursive signaling thread bypass.thread_idto satisfystd::is_trivially_copyable_v, enabling its use instd::atomic.Any background context you want to provide?
Previously, OS threads calling
remove_callbackwould evaluatehpx::threads::get_self_id()toinvalid_thread_id. Ifsignalling_thread_was also uninitialized/invalid, the function would falsely assume it was the signaling thread. It would bypass the spin-wait barrier, destroying the callback while another thread was actively executing it.Checklist
