🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep the allocation guard until construction succeeds.
If connect or a sender move throws during allocator_traits::construct, sp is destroyed while its pointer does not refer to a fully constructed shared state. Releasing that pointer has undefined behavior instead of safely deallocating the allocation. Keep p responsible for failed construction. Then transfer ownership to sp before starting the operation; that requires moving startup out of the constructor so synchronous completion remains protected. This applies to both paths.

If a future shared state is constructed with init_no_addref{}, then it's reference count starts at 1 (this is to avoid a atomic increment during construction).

@hkaiser Thanks for the clarification regarding CodeRabbit is absolutely correct here: wrapping the pointer before construction succeeds breaks exception safety if I will push the updated fix shortly. |

@shivansh023023 there is no use-after-free to fix here, so please don't move Moving the start out of the constructor would only shuffle the code around without fixing anything, and the exception path on master is already correct: if Unless you have a reproducer that fails with the current master (e.g. a test that shows the use-after-free under ASan), I'd prefer to close this PR and #7840. If you do have one, please post it in #7840 first. |

Thank you for the detailed breakdown of the reference counting mechanics. My static analysis tool misidentified the lifecycle of the initial reference provided by Since the master branch is already safe and there is no UAF, I am closing this PR and issue #7840. Thanks for catching this and preventing the unnecessary code churn! |
Fixes #7840
Proposed Changes
make_futureandmake_future_with_run_loopcaused by synchronous sender completions.start_operation_stateexecutes by wrapping the raw pointer in anhpx::intrusive_ptr.sp.detach()instead of the potentially dangling raw pointer.Any background context you want to provide?
Previously, memory for
future_datawas allocated and initialized with an initial reference count of 0. Inside the constructor,future_receiverholds anintrusive_ptrpointing tothis, incrementing the count to 1, before immediately callingdetail::start_operation_state(op_state).If the sender completes synchronously (e.g., inline senders or already-satisfied continuations),
future_receiver::set_value_implexecutes before the constructor returns. It invokesset_value(...)and then callsdata.reset(), dropping the reference count back to 0 and triggering immediate deallocation. The constructor would then return, and themake_futurebody would pass a dangling pointer intofuture_access::create, resulting in a UAF or double-free upon any subsequent.get()or continuation chaining. Securing the reference count prior to execution guarantees the shared state outlives synchronous completion.Checklist
