26-52: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy liftAdd a phase-count check for directly run children.
The regression helpers assert only thread counts. A change that drops the phase increment on the direct-parent path would still pass. This PR targets inaccurate
/threads/time/averagevalues, which depend on phase counts, so that side of the change has no test guard.Adding this check is not trivial.
check_countedcallshpx::this_thread::yield()at least 100 times on the same worker, and those yields can add phases to that worker's counters. An exact phase comparison would be fragile. A lower bound ofnum_childrencould be met by the yields alone. Measure the phase delta on a path without the polling loop, or subtract a baseline measured around the yield loop.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Thanks, this looks correct to me and covers both cases from #7830 (the leftover queue entry of launch::async children and launch::fork children without one).
I checked the counting against the pool: counter_data_ is indexed by the pool-local thread number (thread_func takes counter_data_[thread_num]), which is what get_local_thread_num_tss() returns, and the scheduling loop of that worker only updates these counters on the same OS thread through references, so the plain increments in add_directly_executed_thread don't race with it. Counting on the worker that runs execute_thread also matches where the scheduling loop would have counted the child had it run it.
On the phase count (CodeRabbit's nitpick): I think there is a cheap way to check it in the 1-worker case. In test_run_directly the parent never yields inside the loop (each child runs inline and f.get() finds the future ready), so the parent's own phase does not end there. Reading get_executed_thread_phases(-1, false) right after the loop, before check_counted starts yielding, should give a delta of exactly num_children with one worker. With more workers, children can run on other workers, so the check would only make sense for hpx::get_os_thread_count() == 1, like the existing inlined check.
A small question on the test: check_counted expects the delta to be exactly num_children. Any other HPX thread that terminates during the measurement would make it larger. I don't think the local runtime starts any by itself in this test, so this is probably fine, just mentioning it in case the test turns out flaky on some configuration.
Unrelated to this PR, but I noticed it while checking the indexing: the log message at the end of scheduled_thread_pool<Scheduler>::thread_func reads counter_data_[global_thread_num].executed_threads_, while the vector is indexed by the local thread_num. For pools other than the first one global_thread_num can be out of range. That's for a separate fix.

Thanks! I added the phase check like you said: it reads the count right after the loop, before check_counted, and only checks it with one worker. The test fails if the phase increment is removed. I also added a small guard. If a plain OS thread (not an HPX thread) waits on the future, the child can run there, and there is no worker to count it on. Now it skips the count in that case instead of crashing. |

Fixes #7830
Proposed Changes
thread_pool_base::add_directly_executed_thread, whichscheduled_thread_poolimplements by counting the thread and one phase for the given worker.execute_threadcalls it when a child it ran directly comes backterminated, on the worker running now (a child that suspended may have resumed elsewhere). The scheduling loop still releases the leftover queue entry without counting it.asyncandfork), run by a worker, andhpx::async(fork), each counted exactly once, at 1 and 4 workers.Any background context you want to provide?
The
forkcase only affects directfutures_factory::post(launch::fork)callers;hpx::async(launch::fork)yields to the child first, so it was already counted. The child is also counted as one phase, so the per-phase averages stay consistent with the thread count.
The test counts 0 of 100 children on master and passes with the fix at 1 and 4 workers, also with cumulative counts off, idle rates on, ITT and Tracy (Debug).
