Fixes #7825

Proposed Changes

  • Add supervision_manager::cancel_all_waiters(): drains every pending await_terminal() waiter (all targets, all epochs) and sets it to invalid_status, then rejects any new waiter. tidy() didn't cover this, it only reaches targets in states_/observers_, and the failure detection loop waits on peer localities the local manager has no state for.
  • Register it as a pre-shutdown function in pre_main(), so it runs on both the hpx::disconnect() and hpx::finalize() paths while the runtime is still active, instead of the promises getting broken in ~supervision_manager after it stopped.
  • In failure_detection_loop(), run the await_terminal continuation with hpx::launch::sync and only hpx::post the probe if the loop hasn't been stopped and the runtime is running. Updated the comment that said abandoned continuations are always safe.
  • Add supervision_await_terminal_shutdown unit test: a pending waiter with a launch::async continuation gets invalid_status during shutdown, and await_terminal() from a later shutdown function is rejected right away.

Any background context you want to provide?

invalid_status is used on purpose instead of future_cancelled, since the failure detection loop treats future_cancelled as a timeout and goes on to probe/fence the peer.

Checklist

Not all points below apply to all pull requests.

  • I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
  • I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
  • I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

Waiters left in the supervision manager were only dropped by its
destructor, after the runtime had stopped. Their promises broke there,
and continuations attached with hpx::launch::async (like the ones in the
supervision_dispatch failure detection loop) aborted trying to register
a thread.

The manager now invalidates all pending waiters from a pre-shutdown
function and rejects new ones afterwards. The failure detection loop's
continuation also runs inline and only posts the probe while the loop
is active and the runtime is running.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Pending supervision waits now finish with a clear error during runtime shutdown, and new waits are rejected once shutdown begins.
    • Runtime shutdown waits for active supervision callbacks to finish before completing wait cancellation.
    • Failure detection stops scheduling additional work after shutdown starts, preventing checks from continuing toward a timeout or fence.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for pending and newly requested supervision waits during runtime shutdown.

Supervision waiters are cancelled before runtime shutdown and complete with hpx::error::invalid_status. New waiters are rejected after cancellation. Failure-detection continuations check stop and runtime state before posting probes. A unit test covers pending and late waiters during shutdown.

Changes: Supervision shutdown handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Close and cancel supervision waiters

The manager API adds cancel_all_waiters. The server closes waiter registration, drains pending waiters with hpx::error::invalid_status, rejects later registrations, and waits for in-flight callbacks.
Run cancellation before shutdown
libs/full/init_runtime/src/pre_main.cpp, components/supervision_dispatch/src/dispatch_api.cpp
pre_main registers waiter cancellation as a pre-shutdown callback. Failure detection stops grace-window checks when stopping. Its continuation posts a probe only when failure detection and the runtime are still active.
Test waiter behavior during shutdown
libs/full/supervision/tests/unit/supervision_await_terminal_shutdown.cpp, libs/full/supervision/tests/unit/CMakeLists.txt
The new unit test checks that shutdown completes a pending waiter with invalid status and rejects a waiter created during shutdown.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states the main change: pending await_terminal waiters are cancelled before runtime shutdown. The raw summary confirms this through cancel_all_waiters, its registration as a pre-shutdown callback in pre_main, and the shutdown test. The title is specific and does not use vague terms.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Only #7825 applies. It is a directly linked, open issue, and its requirement is coding work. The issue asks that outstanding failure-detection checks finish or be cancelled, so that hpx::disconnect() and hpx::stop() do not abort. The PR meets this in the following way. supervision_manager::cancel_all_waiters() drains every pending await_terminal() waiter across all targets and epochs, completes each with hpx::error::invalid_status, and closes waiter registration. It is registered as a pre-shutdown function in pre_main(), so it runs while the runtime is active on the disconnect and finalize paths. In failure_detection_loop(), each await_terminal continuation now uses hpx::launch::sync. The guarded continuation returns without posting a probe when the stop flag is set or hpx::is_running() is false. This removes the hpx::launch::async thread registration that caused the abort in ~supervision_manager. A stop check between grace windows and before the final probe in stalled_after_grace() prevents a stopped loop from continuing toward a fence. The supervision_await_terminal_shutdown unit test covers a pending waiter with an async continuation receiving invalid_status, and rejection of a waiter created from a later shutdown function. One difference from the issue wording: the outstanding checks are cancelled in the pre-shutdown step, not in the body of supervision::finalize() itself. The observable requirement, no abort and a clean stop after disconnect, is addressed by this design. The reproducer was not executed in this review.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas relate to #7825 shutdown handling. The changes are: cancel_all_waiters() in the supervision manager, server, and public header; its registration in pre_main(); the synchronous guarded continuation and stop checks in dispatch_api.cpp; the explanatory comment updates in dispatch_api.cpp; the new supervision_await_terminal_shutdown test; and the unit test list in CMakeLists.txt. The CMakeLists.txt diff shows that the existing supervision_await_terminal parameters are unchanged. The change only reformats the test list and adds the new test with THREADS_PER_LOCALITY 4. The dispatch_api.cpp diff adds an hpx/modules/async_local.hpp include. The include is needed for the launch policy and the hpx::post call used by the guarded continuation. No unrelated functional change was found in the inspected diffs. The server and test source files were assessed from the summary and were not diffed in full in this review.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description directly matches the changeset. It describes shutdown-time cancellation of pending supervision waiters, failure-detection loop updates, pre-shutdown registration, and the regression test.

cancel_all_waiters() now waits for in-flight sweep_timer_callback()
invocations, so waiters they drained are resolved before it returns.
stalled_after_grace() checks the stop flag before each grace window, so
a probe posted just before finalize() stops early and never fences.
Take the continuation's future by value (clang-tidy

Thanks, this looks like the right fix for #7825 to me. Invalidating all pending waiters as a pre-shutdown function resolves them while the runtime is still active, waiters_closed_ makes sure nothing is registered afterwards that only the destructor could break, and running the continuation with hpx::launch::sync and posting the probe only while the loop is running and hpx::is_running() holds means that the continuations resolved during shutdown (where the state is no longer running) do nothing at all. The test covers both parts and should abort on master, since there the waiter's launch::async continuation is run from ~supervision_manager.

On CodeRabbit's last comment (other paths that extract waiters under mtx_ and resolve them after releasing it), I agree with your reply: publish_event(), record_error(), remove_target() and the opportunistic sweeps all run on HPX threads, and the runtime only stops once all HPX threads have finished, so whatever they extracted is resolved while registering a thread still works. The problem from #7825 was only the resolution from the destructor after the runtime had stopped. Waiting for in-flight sweep_timer_callback()s in cancel_all_waiters() isn't strictly needed for the same reason, but it's cheap and keeps "no waiter is pending once this returns" true, so I'd keep it.

Two small things:

  • The updated comment above pace_consecutive_sweeps() now says that once finalize() has returned no continuation spawns any further work, so hpx::disconnect()/hpx::stop() may follow right away. That's true for the continuations, but, as you said in your reply to CodeRabbit, a probe posted right before finalize() set the stop flag can still be in its current grace window after finalize() returns. It no longer fences and stops at the next check, but please say that in the comment, so it doesn't promise more than the code does.
  • supervision_manager::cancel_all_waiters() is now part of the public client API, but calling it permanently closes await_terminal() on this locality. Please mention in its documentation that it is meant for shutdown only (it is registered as a pre-shutdown function) and not for applications to call.

It no longer fences and stops at the next check, but please say that in the comment, so it doesn't promise more than the code does.

aight, ill update the comments, i was waiting for any ci fails or the rabbit pings before updating them, turns out it is mostly green.. thank you for the review : )

Say in the failure detection comment that a probe posted right before
finalize() may still finish its grace window afterwards, and document
cancel_all_waiters() as shutdown-only.

Commit 6da74e32bb0971b5f71f404e2bec68e0cd43cdcc, Jenkins build 6142

medusa12 has no references for some of the benchmarks (new ones, or ones whose measurements changed). New references of all its benchmarks, measured by this run, are uploaded as medusa12.tar.gz, copy it to tools/perftests_ci/perftest/references to use them.

Explanation of Symbols

The benchmarks ran on medusa12, the results are compared with the references of that node.

Percentage Diff. is the change of the median time relative to the reference, positive values mean faster.

SymbolMeaning
=No performance change (confidence interval within ±1%)
(=)Probably no performance change (confidence interval within ±2%)
(+)/(-)Very small performance improvement/degradation (≤1%)
+/-Small performance improvement/degradation (≤5%)
++/--Large performance improvement/degradation (≤10%)
+++/---Very large performance improvement/degradation (>10%)
?Probably no change, but quite large uncertainty (confidence interval within ±5%)
??Unclear result, very large uncertainty (±10%)
???Something unexpected
no referenceNo reference results for this node yet, the plot shows only the current results
