Fixes #7826

Proposed Changes

  • Replace $<HOST_LINK:...> with $<1:...> in hpx_construct_library_list when building the pkg-config link flags.

Any background context you want to provide?

FindMPI wraps the link flags reported by the MPI compiler wrapper (e.g. -Wl,-rpath ... -Wl,--enable-new-dtags) as $<HOST_LINK:SHELL:...> in the INTERFACE_LINK_OPTIONS of MPI::MPI_CXX. When the modules are built as OBJECT libraries (HPX_WITH_MODULES_AS_STATIC_LIBRARIES=OFF, the default for generators other than Ninja), these options end up in the pkg-config link flags, and file(GENERATE) fails because $<HOST_LINK:...> can only be evaluated for a binary target. That's why the issue showed up with Unix Makefiles but not with Ninja.

Tested by configuring with the MPI parcelport and the link flags from the issue (CMake 3.28): Unix Makefiles with OBJECT modules now configures, and the generated .pc files contain the plain rpath flags. Ninja with the default settings configures as before.

Checklist

Not all points below apply to all pull requests.

  • I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
  • I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test.
  • I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

FindMPI puts the link flags reported by the MPI compiler wrapper (for
instance -Wl,-rpath ... -Wl,--enable-new-dtags) into the
INTERFACE_LINK_OPTIONS of MPI::MPI_CXX as $<HOST_LINK:SHELL:...>. When
HPX modules are built as OBJECT libraries (the default for generators
other than Ninja), these options end up in the pkg-config files, and
file(GENERATE) fails because $<HOST_LINK:...> can only be evaluated for
a binary target.

Replace $<HOST_LINK:...> with $<1:...> when constructing the pkg-config
link flags, so the plain flags are written instead.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved processing of host-link options when generating package settings, helping preserve library link options across supported build configurations.
    • Improved handling of compiler- and language-specific flags so that flags are evaluated against the active C++ compiler.
  • Build and Test
    • Added a configuration check using Unix Makefiles and MPI linker options. The check disables tests and examples and cleans up its build directory afterward.

The CMake package utilities now resolve compiler-specific language expressions and normalize host-link wrappers in link options. The workflow adds a Unix Makefiles configuration using MPI parcelports and explicit MPI C++ linker flags.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#7826] requires that Unix Makefiles configuration with the MPI parcelport completes when FindMPI supplies $<HOST_LINK:...> link options. The head changes hpx_construct_library_list in cmake/HPX_GeneratePackageUtils.cmake. Each INTERFACE link option is rewritten from $<HOST_LINK:SHELL:...> and $<HOST_LINK:...> to $<1:...> before the list is written with file(GENERATE). This removes the expression that file(GENERATE) rejects for OBJECT modules. The workflow step in .github/workflows/configure-test-combination.yml runs a configure-only Unix Makefiles build with MPI_CXX_LINK_FLAGS set to the rpath and new-dtags flags from the issue. The changes at head do not change the reported failure path. The configure step was not executed in this review. A reviewer comment reports that CI tests seemed to fail. No resolution is in the provided comments. That report concerns CI status, not a proven coding gap, so this assessment rests on the static code path.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The HOST_LINK rewrite directly implements [#7826]. The head also adds a COMPILE_LANG_AND_ID evaluation to hpx_filter_language_flags. That function already handles COMPILE_LANGUAGE expressions for the same pkg-config generation. The new code replaces each COMPILE_LANG_AND_ID expression with 1 for CXX and a matching compiler ID, and with 0 otherwise. It addresses the same file(GENERATE) limitation for MPI and threading compile flags. This is a related extension of the same failure class, not an unrelated change. The workflow step is a focused configure-only regression test for the reported configuration. No unrelated change is shown.

Should we switch one or two of the github action-based Linux CIs to use make instead of ninja to avoid for this problem to come back?

@hkaiser good idea. I tried that locally, though, and make on its own wouldn't have caught this one. The Ubuntu OpenMPI wrapper doesn't report any link flags (mpicxx --showme:link is just -L... -lmpi), so FindMPI never adds the $<HOST_LINK:...> option, and a plain make configure of master works fine. It only fails once the wrapper reports something like the rpath flags from the issue, which is common for EasyBuild and Spack installs.

What does catch it is a configure-only step with OBJECT modules, the MPI parcelport, and those flags passed explicitly. The error happens at generation time, so no build is needed. configure-test-combination.yml seems like a good fit, since build_env:17 already has OpenMPI and make. I ran such a step with CMake 4.3.2 (the version in the image): it fails on master with the same errors as #7826 and passes with this PR. I'll add it to this PR so it's covered from now on.

Configure with Unix Makefiles, so that the modules are built as OBJECT
libraries, with the MPI parcelport and MPI link flags as reported by the
compiler wrappers of EasyBuild or Spack installs. The OpenMPI wrapper in
the build environment doesn't report any link flags, so they are passed
explicitly. Without the previous commit this configuration fails with
the $<HOST_LINK:...> error from TheHPXProject#7826.

Check the generated pkg-config link flags before cleanup.

This step detects a configuration failure, but it also passes if package generation silently omits the MPI link flags. Check a generated .pc file for the expected rpath flag before rm -rf *. This will cover the pkg-config output that the change intends to fix.

@hkaiser I've added a step to the configure-test workflow that runs CMake with make and passes MPI link flags explicitly, so this case is covered even though the Ubuntu MPI wrapper doesn't report any. It fails on current master and passes with the fix.

@Ishaan400 Those tests seem to fail now, however.

FindMPI wraps -pthread and -fexceptions from the MPI wrapper's compile
flags as $<$<COMPILE_LANG_AND_ID:CUDA,NVIDIA>:SHELL:-Xcompiler >-pthread
so they can be passed through nvcc. Like $<HOST_LINK:...>, this
expression can only be evaluated for a binary target, so generating the
pkg-config files fails when the MPI wrapper reports -pthread, as the
OpenMPI wrapper on Ubuntu 20.04 (used by the configure test) does.

Evaluate these expressions when constructing the flags instead: true
for CXX if the current compiler is one of the listed ids, false
otherwise.

@hkaiser Thanks for catching that. The new step turned up a second problem of the same kind: the OpenMPI wrapper in the CI image (Ubuntu 20.04) also reports -pthread, which FindMPI wraps in $<COMPILE_LANG_AND_ID:CUDA,NVIDIA>, and file(GENERATE) can't evaluate that either. I've pushed a fix that evaluates these expressions when building the pkg-config flags. This time I ran the whole workflow in a 20.04 environment matching the CI image before pushing, and the configure test now passes here as well.

The Windows jobs are failing for a different reason, unfortunately. They all stop in "Install dependencies" because the vcpkg archive download from rostam.cct.lsu.edu times out, so HPX doesn't even get configured. I looked into whether I could do something about it from the PR, but the download is part of the workflow setup and I can't re-run jobs here. Windows passed on the previous commit, so it looks like the server is just unreachable at the moment. Once it's back, I'm happy to push an update to re-trigger CI if that's easier than re-running the jobs.

Yes, the windows CIs rely on a download from a machine that is down today, please ignore those.
