- Around line 303-304: Clarify the runtime scheduler-mode guidance near
hpx::threads::add_scheduler_mode, remove_scheduler_mode, and set_scheduler_mode:
changing do_background_work on a running pool does not start or stop background
work because the worker captures that decision when its scheduling loop starts.
State that this setting must not be relied on to control polling through a live
mode change.
- Around line 115-117: Update the fast idle description in the
thread_scheduler_modes section to say that fast idle removes the idle-loop delay
for staged stealing while preserving min_tasks_to_steal_pending and
min_tasks_to_steal_staged; work remains unavailable when either minimum exceeds
the victim queue length.
- Around line 433-435: Update the idle loop count description to preserve that
idle backoff does not reset it, while clarifying that background work resets it
when callbacks.background_() returns true with the background thread active.

Add the manual section "Configuring and tuning the thread schedulers": how a worker thread finds work, all settings that influence it, the scheduler modes, which scheduler uses which setting, how the settings depend on each other, and tuning hints. Complete the [hpx] and [hpx.thread_queue] settings tables, and fix the unit of hpx.max_idle_backoff_time (microseconds) and the description of hpx.max_busy_loop_count in the docs and config.hpp. Signed-off-by: Hartmut Kaiser <[email protected]>

Proposed Changes
docs/sphinx/manual/thread_scheduler_configuration.rst): how a worker thread finds work, all settings that influence it (pending and staged stealing, conversion of staged tasks, idle backoff, background work, thread object recycling, NUMA), the scheduler modes, which scheduler uses which setting, how the settings depend on each other, and tuning hints.[hpx]and[hpx.thread_queue]sections in "Launching and configuring HPX applications" now list all keys (hpx.scheduler,hpx.numa_sensitive,hpx.default_scheduler_mode,max_thread_count,min_delete_count,max_terminated_threads,init_threads_count,cached_threads_countwere missing) and describe what each one does.hpx.max_idle_backoff_timeis in microseconds, not milliseconds;hpx.max_background_threadsdefaults tohpx.os_threads.HPX_BUSY_LOOP_COUNT_MAXandHPX_IDLE_BACKOFF_TIME_MAXinconfig.hppare fixed accordingly.Any background context you want to provide?
Documentation only, no code changes (apart from two comments in
config.hpp).The text describes master as of eaff5b9, i.e. after the scheduler fixes #7750-#7757 and #7771: the three
hpx.numa_sensitivelevels with default 1, the work-requesting schedulers always running in fast idle mode and honoringmin_tasks_to_steal_pending, the modes some schedulers enforce, andmin_add_new_countbeing limited tomax_add_new_count. Each statement was checked against the code.A follow-up PR for the local priority queue scheduler (pending stealing gate) will add its two new settings to these pages.
