synchronization: make counting_semaphore wait_until timeout test independent of scheduling - #7822
Conversation
…pendent of scheduling The regression test added in TheHPXProject#7802 assumed the main thread acquires the mutex before the waiter's 10 ms deadline. On loaded CI nodes (Jenkins gcc-12-cuda-12) the main thread can be scheduled after the deadline; the waiter then correctly times out without the credit, and the test failed with state 2 and a left-over credit even though the semaphore behaved correctly. Record whether the lock was taken before the deadline, always signal past the deadline, join and drain the semaphore, and only check the iterations that actually exercised the timeout/signal race, with an upper bound on attempts so the test cannot run forever. - Line 276: Update the counting semaphore test loop so it waits until deadline +
100 ms only when before_deadline is true; for late attempts, skip that wait.
Preserve signaling, joining, and draining cleanup for every attempt.

…aphore timeout test When the main thread acquires the mutex only after the waiter's deadline the attempt is not checked, yet the test still spun until deadline + 100 ms before signaling. On a heavily loaded node many such attempts could add up to a long test runtime. Only spin past the deadline when the lock was taken before it; late attempts still signal, join and drain the semaphore immediately. Signed-off-by: aneek22112007-tech <[email protected]>
Follow-up to #7802. As @hkaiser pointed out,
test_wait_until_timeout_does_not_lose_signalis flaky on Jenkins (gcc-12-cuda-12). It fails withstate.load() == 3('2' != '3') and then!left_overwhen the main thread gets the mutex only after the waiter's deadline. That iteration never sets up the race, so the waiter correctly times out.The test now records whether the lock was taken before the deadline and always signals, joins and drains the semaphore. It only checks iterations that really exercised the race: 8 are needed, with at most 1000 attempts. It does not lengthen the deadline. With the #7802 fix reverted, the test still fails reliably at 2 or more threads. Test-only change.
