Fix null pointer dereference in split_future on invalid futures

  • Added missing shared state null-checks to split_nth_continuation and split_continuation attach routines.

Fixes #7806

Proposed Changes

  • Added Null-Checks: Inserted if (!state) validation in split_nth_continuation::attach and split_continuation::attach.
  • Exception Safety: If an uninitialized, default-constructed, or moved-from future is passed to hpx::split_future, it now cleanly sets an hpx::error::no_state exception instead of immediately triggering a segmentation fault by dereferencing a null shared_state_ptr.

Checklist

Not all points below apply to all pull requests.

  • I have added a new feature and have added tests to go along with it.
  • I have fixed a bug and have added a regression test. (Relies on existing async_combinator CI testing)
  • I have added a test using random numbers; I have made sure it uses a seed, and that random numbers generated are valid inputs for the tests.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of invalid futures when splitting results.
    • Resulting futures now consistently report a “no state” error instead of attempting completion processing.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for invalid HPX, adapted tuple, and vector futures.
    • Added asynchronous split-future tests to the test suite.

split_future continuation attachment now handles missing shared states by setting hpx::error::no_state and returning. Unit tests cover invalid HPX tuple, adapted std::tuple, and vector futures.

Changes: split_future validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate shared state during attachment
libs/core/async_combinators/include/hpx/async_combinators/split_future.hpp
Both continuation attach methods check for a missing shared state. They set hpx::error::no_state and return before deferred execution or callback registration.
Cover invalid split futures
libs/core/lcos_local/tests/unit/split_future.cpp, libs/core/async_combinators/tests/unit/split_future_async_combinators.cpp, libs/core/async_combinators/tests/unit/CMakeLists.txt
Tests cover invalid HPX tuples, conditionally adapted std::tuple values, and vectors. They check that the resulting futures report hpx::error::no_state; the async combinators test is added to the test list.

Explanation

Issue #7806 requires hpx::split_future to report hpx::error::no_state for a future with no shared state. Both split_nth_continuation::attach and split_continuation::attach now check the shared state before dereference and set that exception. Regression tests cover invalid HPX tuples, adapted std::tuple values, and vectors. The separate when_all_vector, sync_wait, and run_loop defects are not requirements for this split-future change.

I have added the regression tests in test_split_invalid_future() for both the tuple and vector continuations! It verifies that passing a default-constructed future into hpx::split_future now cleanly throws hpx::error::no_state instead of segfaulting.

Thanks, the null checks look right, and the test would crash without them.

  1. The same test is added twice: to the existing libs/core/lcos_local/tests/unit/split_future.cpp and as the new libs/core/async_combinators/tests/unit/split_future_async_combinators.cpp. Please keep it only in the existing test and drop the new file (and its line in CMakeLists.txt).

  2. The last commit ("Trigger CI") has no Signed-off-by, which makes the DCO check fail. Please amend it with git commit --amend -s (or drop that commit) and force-push.

  3. A question: future::then() on a future without a shared state throws no_state right away, while split_future now returns futures that carry that error and throw only on get(). Both are fine with me, but was that difference intentional?

I have removed the duplicate test file from async_combinators and its associated CMake entry. I also amended my previous commit to include the missing DCO sign-off.

Regarding your question about no_state: Yes, that difference was intentional. Because split_future returns a structured collection (a tuple or vector of futures), throwing no_state immediately would abruptly break the pipeline and violate the expectation of returning that collection. Embedding the no_state exception into the returned futures allows the caller to compose them normally and handle the exception cleanly at the .get() boundary, which tends to be safer and more predictable in async pipelines.
