34-34: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy liftTest queue placement as well as task priority.
get_priority()checks the task's priority. It does not show whether the receiving worker placed that task in its high-priority queue. If a stolen high-priority task enters the normal queue, this assertion can still pass. Add a controlled mixed-priority steal case that checks high-priority work runs before pending normal work on the receiving worker. (github.com)🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Thanks, this looks good overall. Carrying the priority in the steal request is simple. Some comments:
-
This will conflict with #7771, which adds the
min_tasks_to_steal_pendingcheck tohandle_steal_request. After rebasing, the check has to use the pending length of the queue that tasks are actually taken from. The local-priority scheduler applies the same minimum to high-priority steals (steal_hpcallsget_next_thread(thrd, true, true)). -
For a steal-half request with a single pending task, a high-priority queue now sends that task, while a normal queue still sends nothing. Both queues need to be treated the same way, so please remove the special case for the high-priority queue (
if (high_priority && max_num_to_steal == 0)). -
Please don't choose between the high-priority and the normal queue based on the high-priority queue's pending length. It is read with relaxed ordering and is only an estimate: if the queue is drained in between,
get_next_threadsreturns nothing and the request is forwarded, although the normal queue may have tasks. Instead, try to take tasks from the high-priority queue, and take them from the normal queue if that returned nothing. -
The
high_priority_flag inworkrequesting_task_dataisn't needed: the thief can choose the queue for each received task from the task's own priority (get_thread_id_data(thrd)->get_priority()), which is whatschedule_threaddoes anyway. That removes the flag, and it would also allow a victim to answer a single request with a mix of high-priority and normal tasks. -
With (4), a received task is placed according to its own priority, just as everywhere else (
create_thread,schedule_thread), so I don't thinktest_high_priority_queue_placementis needed. It also depends on timing (a fixed 100 ms sleep, spinning bound tasks, up to 10 attempts), which tends to cause sporadic failures on loaded CI machines. Please remove it. The existing test already covers the regression (high-priority tasks being stolen at all). -
get_next_threadnow picks up tasks sent by a victim before selecting the next task. I think that's a good change in general: tasks sent to a worker that has become busy again no longer wait in the channel until that worker runs out of work. But it applies to all steals, not only to high-priority ones, so please adjust the comment and mention it in the PR description.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winContinue past filtered high-priority tasks.
A normal-only request can extract only stored-high tasks from the bounded batch.
take_tasksrestores those tasks, leavesthrds.tasks_empty, and does not inspect the remaining normal queue entries. The handler then forwards the request without returning work. This can leave an idle worker without work for one steal cycle even though eligible normal work remains. Continue extracting untilmax_normaleligible tasks are found or the queue is exhausted.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Stolen boost tasks lose high-priority queue placement on the thief.
create_thread changes thread_priority::boost to thread_priority::normal at Line 732-735, before it calls high_priority_queue_->create_thread. A boost task in a victim's high_priority_queue_ therefore has get_priority() == thread_priority::normal. schedule_thread with an explicit high priority (Line 1219-1233) can also put a thread with a normal stored priority in high_priority_queue_.
If a thief takes such a task through take_tasks(high_priority_queue, ...), task_queue routes it by its stored priority to d.queue_. The task then runs after the thief's normal work and after high-priority tasks spawned later. A third worker also treats it as normal work, because it can steal the task without the high-priority request. The task loses high-priority scheduling only because a steal moved it.
The response must record whether it came from the victim's high_priority_queue_. Use that source as well as the stored priority to pick the thief's queue. Tasks from the high-priority source must go to d.high_priority_queue_. This is safe because the victim uses high_priority_queue only when req.steal_high_priority_ is true. That flag is true only when the thief has a high-priority queue (Line 1794-1795). The per-task check still covers high-priority tasks that a thief takes from a victim's normal queue.

+ if (from_high)

+ return d.high_priority_queue_;
+ }
thread_priority const priority =
get_thread_id_data(thrd)->get_priority();This follows a maintainer learning: stolen high-priority tasks must keep high-priority scheduling, and keeping the stored thread_priority does not by itself keep the queue precedence.

Fixes #7775
Proposed Changes
Any background context you want to provide?
The steal request carries whether the requesting worker can accept high-priority work. A victim filters high-priority tasks out of responses to workers without a high-priority queue and returns them to its own queue without changing their stored priority. Batches taken from a high-priority queue retain that queue placement on the receiving worker, including boost tasks whose stored priority is normalized to normal. Tasks taken from a normal queue are still routed from their own stored priority.
