🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winRelease the ownership mutex before shutdown callbacks run.
runtime::stop()invokes registeredon_exitcallbacks on the same thread that calledhpx::local::stop(). A callback registered through the publicregister_on_exitAPI can callhpx::local::stop()again. The nested call passes the HPX-thread check, then deadlocks on the nonrecursive mutex before it can observe the exchanged null runtime pointer.Keep the mutex around only the pointer exchange. The nested call can then observe the null pointer and report the existing invalid-status error without taking duplicate ownership.

Can you construct a test that would fail without your change and add it?

Thanks, keeping the global pointer set while wait() runs and serializing stop() through the mutex and is_stopping looks right to me. A few things are left:
-
rtis declared aftercleanup_state, so it is destroyed first: ifwait()orstop()throws beforedeinit_global_data()has run, the runtime is deleted whileget_runtime_ptr()still points to it, and the global is cleared only afterwards. Please declarertbeforecleanup_state, so that the pointer is cleared before the runtime is destroyed. -
try_catch_exception_ptrwith a handler that just rethrowsepbehaves exactly like calling the lambda directly, so the wrapper can go. -
The test passes on master as well: a successful
stop()already clears the global pointer there (runtime::stop()callsdeinit_global_data()), so a secondstop()reportsinvalid_statusand repeated start/stop cycles work. What the change does fix is concurrentstop()calls (and an exception fromwait()/stop()). Could you add a test that callshpx::local::stop()from twostd::threads whilehpx_mainis still running (for instance,hpx_mainwaits a bit before callingfinalize()), and checks that exactly one of them returns the result and the other one fails withinvalid_status? That one would fail without the change. -
Minor: please keep the "(did you already call hpx::stop?)" hint in the error message, and name the test
local_stoplike the others in that directory (the_testsuffix is added to the target already).
I've updated the PR to address all your points:

Thanks, this looks right to me now. rt is declared before cleanup_state, so on every path the global pointer is cleared (if stop() hasn't already done that through deinit_global_data()) before the runtime is destroyed, the try_catch_exception_ptr wrapper is gone, and the mutex is only held around the check and the setting of is_stopping, so an on_exit callback that calls hpx::local::stop() again gets invalid_status instead of deadlocking. The new test covers the case the change actually fixes: with two threads calling stop() while hpx_main is still running, one of them waits for the runtime and the other one is rejected, where on master both would take ownership of the same runtime.
Please update the PR description before this is merged: it still describes the std::exchange version, while the change now keeps the global pointer set while wait() runs, serializes stop() with a mutex and the is_stopping flag, and clears the pointer before the runtime is destroyed.
On CI: the Jenkins failures are partitioned_vector_merge* (MPI) and the LCW serialize_buffer test, which fail on many other PRs at the moment as well and are not related to this change. For the latest commit, only the gcc-12-cuda-12 builds have reported so far, and local_stop passes in both.

Fixes #7768
Proposed Changes
hpx::local::stopcaused by concurrent stop requests.stop()calls by using a mutex and anis_stoppingflag. Subsequent concurrent calls are safely rejected with aninvalid_statusexception rather than deadlocking or taking shared ownership of the runtime.wait()runs, clearing it only whenstop()completes successfully or when the runtime is destroyed.rtbeforecleanup_stateto ensure the global pointer is cleared before the runtime is destroyed (in the event of an exception).local_stop.cpp) to verify safe rejection of concurrent requests.Any background context you want to provide?
As outlined in #7768, concurrent calls to
hpx::local::stop()could previously take ownership of the same runtime instance, leading to undefined behavior or double-frees. Furthermore, if an exception occurred duringwait(), the runtime could be deleted while the global pointer still held a reference to it.Initially, an
std::exchangeapproach was considered, but it cleared the global pointer too early. This updated implementation uses a mutex and anis_stoppingflag to serialize access, rejecting secondary callers safely. Additionally, fixing the declaration order ofrtandcleanup_stateguarantees that the global pointer is naturally cleared before the runtime is freed, completely eliminating the dangling pointer risk.Checklist
