Rewrite the datapar sequential_search_n implementation as a sliding-window SIMD scan, with scalar verification only for mixed packs.
Rewrite datapar sequential_search to scan for the first needle element with SIMD and verify complete candidates scalarly.
Preserve scalar compatibility for predicates and projections that cannot be invoked with a vector pack.
Avoid indexing scalable SIMD masks and avoid relying on the SVE backend's broken none_of adapter.
Add deterministic regression coverage for one-element ranges, the last valid match, SIMD-boundary crossings, and false initial candidates.
Add focused search and search_n performance tests with validated command-line inputs; only register them when datapar support is enabled.
The unaligned load/store fix originally included in this PR was split out and has already been merged as #7435. This keeps this PR focused on the search algorithm changes.

Pull request overview
Note
Copilot was unable to run its full agentic suite in this review.
This PR improves SIMD/datapar behavior for search and search_n, and adds performance benchmarks to compare HPX execution policies against the standard library.
Changes:
Updated SIMD vector pack unaligned load/store to use explicit (element-aligned) pointer-based loads/stores for non-scalar packs.
Reworked datapar implementations in search.hpp to use SIMD prefiltering (for search) and a sliding-window SIMD scan (for search_n).
Added new performance benchmarks for search and search_n and registered them in the performance CMake target list.

Hi @ArivoliR — this looks like solid work, especially the search/search_n rewrites with the benchmark data. I was looking at #7287 and noticed this PR covers the unaligned load/store fix as part of a larger change, but it's been quiet since June.
Just checking: is this still active on your end? If you're still working on it, no action needed from me — happy to leave it with you. If it's stalled for now, I'd be glad to pick up just the vector_pack_load/vector_pack_storeunaligned fix (EVE + std-experimental-simd backends) as a smaller, separate PR against #7287, and leave the search/search_n rewrite for you to bring back whenever you're ready. Let me know either way.

Yeah sure, do go ahead with that PR :D
Had gotten caught up with my summer bootcamp and on-campus internship post that. Will prolly get to the search/search_n rewrites soon. You can for sure go with the fix for #7287 though! Have fun

The SIMD scan reads count - 1 elements past the last start position.
Checking was_cancelled at those positions returned true for indices
>= max_start, cutting the scan short and missing runs that end at the
last element. Check against the earliest start of the current run
instead.
Also add search_n boundary tests and fail the benchmarks on invalid
parameters.

The benchmark completes every std sample before it starts the seq samples, and it runs the remaining policies in the same fixed order. Cache state and CPU clock changes can therefore bias the reported comparison. Interleave samples and rotate or randomize the policy order. Record that order with the timings. Based on learnings, fixed sample order can systematically bias benchmark comparisons.

The guard checked iterator_datapar_compatible on a zip_iterator, which
is never random access, so search always fell back to the scalar loop.
Only the haystack is loaded as packs, so check that iterator alone.
Name the pack type only after the compatibility check passes, and
re-project the first needle element at each use instead of copying it
so projections returning non-copyable types work.
Add tests that the SIMD path is taken for search and search_n, and a
non-copyable projection test.

This benchmark uses std::begin, std::end, and std::distance below, but it does not include <iterator>. Those declarations are not guaranteed to be provided transitively by <algorithm>, so add the standard header to keep this executable portable across standard library implementations.

The current case uses a one-element needle but a multi-element haystack. Add a direct assertion with a one-element haystack to exercise the singleton-range path changed by this PR.

The count == 1 cases use haystacks of pack_size * 4 + 2 elements. They enter the SIMD bulk loop before the scalar tail. They do not exercise the scalar-only path used when a one-element haystack skips the bulk loop. Add a direct one-element assertion with count == 1.

The SIMD loads read pack_size elements straight from memory, which is
only valid for contiguous ranges. Random-access iterators such as
std::deque<int>::iterator were admitted and read across block
boundaries. Require is_contiguous_iterator for search and search_n, as
the datapar loops do, and add deque tests that check the SIMD path is
not taken.
