Implements five recommendations from a codebase review and prepares the 2.1.0 release. Each commit is self-contained and passes formatting, clippy, and tests.

Changes

  • Docs and legacy cleanup. Moves the dated 2026-09-29 reviews to docs/history/. Rewrites about 20 comments that cited "C# parity" so they state the current reason or the 1.x settings compatibility they protect. Renames tests/parity.rs to tests/core_api.rs.
  • Visible startup failures and a Direct3D 12 fallback. The release build has no console, so a failed window creation previously exited silently. Startup failures now show an error dialog. If OpenGL can't open the window, the app retries with eframe's wgpu renderer on Direct3D 12. CS2_RESEDIT_RENDERER=opengl|d3d12 pins one. This adds about 2.5 MB to the exe (5.6 MB to 8.3 MB).
  • Editor model. File editing state and its transitions move out of ResEditApp (18 fields) into app/editor.rs, which has no egui dependency. Apply and restore return outcomes instead of setting status text. Eleven editing tests now run against Editor directly.
  • Typed footer status. StatusLine and Notice (app/status.rs) replace the three set_*_status helpers, load_warning, and the replacen rewriting. Preference warnings get their own footer slot. This commit also fixes an ordering regression from the previous commit, where the edit hint replaced "Configuration loaded.". A new test pins the correct order.
  • Debounced preferences and no wheel on the account picker. Settings are written after a 500 ms quiet period and on exit, instead of on every load and theme change. The account selector no longer changes on mouse-wheel input, so scrolling past it can't open another file.
  • 2.1.0 release prep. Bumps the version, adds the changelog entry and release notes, and updates the README and roadmap. The unreleased work includes features, so this is a minor release.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -D warnings are clean. 114 tests pass, with 1 ignored that needs a live desktop.
  • cargo deny check (0.20.2) reports advisories, bans, licenses, and sources ok.
  • Tested the renderer fallback locally by breaking OpenGL with the pinned Mesa build:
    • OpenGL forced: the error dialog appears.
    • Default settings: the window opens on Direct3D 12.
  • Ran the release build live: it auto-loaded a real configuration, wrote nothing to it, and saved settings once after the quiet period.

Not covered

  • CI still smoke-tests only OpenGL. I haven't checked whether hosted Windows runners have a usable Direct3D 12 adapter; this is noted in the roadmap.
  • Configuration loads, applies, and restores still run on the UI thread.
  • A close request sent about 170 ms after the window appears is ignored, and main behaves the same way. I didn't investigate this.

Releasing: after merge, push the v2.1.0 tag and the release workflow publishes the tested assets.

Softhe and others added 6 commits October 20, 2026 14:27
The two 2026-09-29 review reports move out of the repository root, and
the README links to the new location. Comments that justified behavior
by the removed C# implementation now state the current reason, or the
1.x settings compatibility they protect. The core test suite is renamed
from parity.rs to core_api.rs to match what it tests.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
The release build has no console, so eprintln! made a failed window
creation or single-instance check invisible: the app simply did not
appear. Fatal startup errors now show an error dialog.

When OpenGL cannot create the window, the app retries with eframe's
wgpu renderer on Direct3D 12 before giving up. A failure after the app
has started is reported rather than retried. CS2_RESEDIT_RENDERER pins
one renderer (opengl or d3d12). The fallback adds about 2.5 MB to the
release executable.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
ResEditApp held the loaded snapshot, pending dimensions, preset list,
derived labels, and external-change notice alongside scan workers,
dialogs, and theming. controller.rs only moved those methods into a
second file, so every editing test had to construct the whole app.

Editor (app/editor.rs) now owns that state and the load, edit, apply,
backup, and restore transitions. It has no egui or preference
dependency, and apply/restore return ApplyOutcome or WriteError values
instead of setting status text. The controller decides which file to
edit, asks before discarding edits, records preferences, and turns the
outcomes into messages. ResEditApp drops 18 fields.

Eleven editing tests move to app/editor/tests.rs and run against Editor
directly, with new coverage for apply/restore round trips and display
availability.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
Footer precedence was spread across set_status, set_operation_status,
set_background_status, a load_warning field, and string edits: account
refresh rewrote "Configuration loaded" with replacen, and a failed
restore re-read self.status to build its message.

StatusLine (app/status.rs) now holds Notice values with explicit rules:
user actions replace the message, apply/restore results survive
background events and edits, and the edit hint never hides a warning.
Messages are composed with Notice::then instead of string surgery.
Preference read and save problems get their own footer slot, so a
settings warning no longer replaces or is glued onto an apply result.

This also fixes an ordering bug from the Editor extraction: the edit
hint ran after "Configuration loaded." and replaced it. A new test pins
the loaded and refreshed messages.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
Every successful load and every theme change wrote settings.json on the
UI thread, and each save also re-validates up to five recent files.
Wheel selection made one step per touchpad event, so scrolling across
the account selector could load several configurations and write
preferences several times in one gesture, switching files without a
prompt when nothing was pending.

Preference changes are now written after a 500 ms quiet period, and on
exit through eframe's on_exit hook. Bursts such as scrolling through
themes become one write. The account selector no longer reacts to the
wheel; displays, presets, aspect, and theme keep it.

A side effect for tests: app tests no longer write the real
%LOCALAPPDATA% settings unless they flush explicitly.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <[email protected]>
Bump the workspace to 2.1.0 and turn the Unreleased changelog section
into the 2.1.0 entry, including this branch's changes. The unreleased
work adds features as well as fixes, so it is a minor release.

RELEASE_NOTES.md leads with the user-facing 2.0.0 fixes: read-only
configurations, files without setting.aspectratiomode, and silent
startup failures. The README documents the Direct3D 12 fallback, the
renderer override, the account selector ignoring the wheel, and the
separate preferences warning. The roadmap records what remains.

📝 Walkthrough

Version 2.1.0 adds renderer fallback and startup error dialogs. Configuration editing and status handling now use dedicated models. Preference changes save after a delay and on exit. The UI, release notes, and project documentation were updated.

Changes: Version 2.1.0 Application

Layer / File(s) Summary
Renderer startup and fallback
crates/app/Cargo.toml, crates/app/src/main.rs, README.md, RELEASE_NOTES.md, ROADMAP.md
Startup attempts OpenGL and can fall back to Direct3D 12 on Windows. An environment variable can pin the renderer. Startup failures are aggregated and shown in a release-build error dialog.
Editor state and guarded configuration operations
crates/app/src/app/editor.rs, crates/app/src/app/editor/tests.rs, crates/app/src/app.rs
The new Editor tracks loaded configuration and pending edits, validates dimensions, and gates Apply and Restore operations. Tests cover edit states, backups, reloads, and external changes.
Editor integration with controls and account flows
crates/app/src/app/controller.rs, crates/app/src/app/panels.rs, crates/app/src/app/dialogs.rs, crates/app/src/app.rs, README.md
The controller and UI use Editor for configuration state and actions. Account refresh and file-loading flows handle pending edits and load failures. Mouse-wheel selection no longer changes the account selector.
Status notices and preference persistence
crates/app/src/app/status.rs, crates/app/src/app.rs, crates/app/src/app/dialogs.rs, README.md
StatusLine separates operation results, background notices, and preference warnings. Preference changes are saved after a quiet period and flushed on exit.
Release metadata and implementation documentation
Cargo.toml, CHANGELOG.md, RELEASE_NOTES.md, ROADMAP.md, crates/core/src/*, crates/core/tests/core_api.rs, docs/history/*
The workspace version is now 2.1.0. Release and project documentation, implementation comments, and history links were updated.

Version 2.1.0's renderer fallback and editor refactor look sound. A few small polish issues remain: the Apply tooltip can show the wrong reason, a preferences-load warning can disappear after a later save, and a mistyped renderer setting is silently ignored. These are safe to merge with follow-up.

[Medium impact] The changes affect startup and editing for users of the Windows desktop app.

The PR appears safe to merge, with two non-blocking test improvements.

Fix All in CodexFindings

  1. P2 Combined footer lacks layout coverage ▶
  2. P2 Renderer setting breaks fallback test ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
crates/app/src/app/dialogs.rs:119-123
The footer now puts two messages beside Apply and Reset in one horizontal row, but the layout test still draws a simplified footer without the new warning chip. Add a test that renders `footer_panel` at the compact window size with both messages present and checks that the buttons stay visible and clickable. Reserve space for the buttons or wrap the messages if needed.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

### Issue 2
crates/app/src/main.rs:342-343
`renderer_fallback_stops_at_success_or_mid_session_failure` reads the real `CS2_RESEDIT_RENDERER` value, then assumes OpenGL is first. On Windows, running tests with the documented `d3d12` setting makes this test fail before it checks fallback behavior. Use an explicit renderer list here, and test the setting parser separately.

```suggestion
        let renderers = vec![
            Renderer::OpenGl,
            #[cfg(windows)]
            Renderer::Direct3D12,
        ];
```

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Moves editing state into Editor and footer messages into StatusLine.

  • The app tries Direct3D 12 when OpenGL cannot open its window.
  • The editor keeps configuration editing state outside the window UI.
  • Footer messages keep operation results visible beside preference warnings.
  • Scrolling over the account picker no longer switches files.
  • Release and project notes now describe the 2.1.0 codebase.

Acknowledged by Softhe: Direct3D 12 CI coverage is deferred; configuration I/O still runs on the UI thread; the early-close behavior also occurs on main and was not investigated.

Valid, and worse than missing coverage: with a long warning plus a preferences warning, the old row pushed Apply off-screen (x ≈ 2197 in an 829 px window). Fixed in 48005a5: the actions are laid out first from the right edge and the messages wrap in the remaining width. footer_actions_stay_visible_with_long_messages renders the footer at 829×544, checks both buttons are on screen, and clicks Apply; it fails on the previous layout.

P2 Renderer setting breaks fallback test

renderer_fallback_stops_at_success_or_mid_session_failure reads the real CS2_RESEDIT_RENDERER value, then assumes OpenGL is first. On Windows, running tests with the documented d3d12 setting makes this test fail before it checks fallback behavior. Use an explicit renderer list here, and test the setting parser separately.

- Footer: lay out Apply and Reset first from the right edge and wrap the
messages in the remaining width. With a long warning and a preferences
warning, the old row pushed Apply off-screen (x = 2197 in an 829 px
window). A new test renders the footer at the compact size, checks both
buttons are on screen, and clicks Apply.
- The disabled Apply tooltip now uses Editor::apply_blocker_reason, so it
matches the visible label (it suggested changing the aspect for invalid
  dimensions).
- Preference read and save problems are tracked separately. A failed and
then successful save no longer erases the startup read warning.
- CS2_RESEDIT_RENDERER rejects unrecognized values with a startup error
instead of silently using automatic selection. The parser takes the
value as input, and the fallback test uses an explicit renderer list
so it no longer depends on the environment.
