Data markup: layers that say what text is, kept by WithoutVisualMarkup() - #67
Conversation
IDataMarkup marks a layer that says what text is rather than how it looks, such as a list separator. The renderer takes data layers off each run before any emitter sees it; WithoutVisualMarkup() strips every other layer and keeps them. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Filter data before emitter selection and context construction.
For a run with data and visual layers, EmitContext.Markups still contains the data layer, even though markups is filtered here. Visual emitters can therefore observe data through the context. A layer that implements both IDataMarkup and IBlockMarkup can also reach TryRenderBlock before this filter. Filter the run and adjacent context sets before dispatch, and exclude data layers from block selection.

Leaving this as is for now. The PR is on hold while we decide whether the engine still needs data markup at all. If the PR goes ahead, the filter moves ahead of emitter selection and block dispatch in its next code push.

Reopened: marked separators are back on, with typed text unmarked by the consumer. This adds Generated by Claude Code |

Before: every layer was visual. A layer that only records a fact about the text (that a character separates list items) had no place: stripping colour meant
ToPlainText(), which dropped it too.After:
IDataMarkupmarks such a layer. No format draws it, andMarkupText.WithoutVisualMarkup()returns the plain text with the data layers still on their characters.SharpMUSH uses this for list separators (
%*<|>): a separator that is an ordinary character plus a data layer, so a list function splits only on marked separators and never on a|inside a box border or typed text.How: the renderer takes data layers off each run before points, set emitters or per-layer emitters see it; a run with nothing else is written as encoded plain text, and an emitter registered for a data type is never called.
WithoutVisualMarkup()rebuilds the text from its runs, dropping points with their carriers asToPlainText()does, and joins data runs that colour had split. Docs:custom-markup.md(Data markup),text-operations.md(Transforming). CHANGELOG opens 2.21.0.Tests:
