Artwork Uploader is a tool to help process sets of posters from ThePosterDB or MediUX (including sets and boxsets) and upload them to your Plex server or download them to your Kometa aset directory in seconds!
You can upload the Zip file you download from theposterdb.com or mediux.pro. It should handle all types of Zip, including the odd misnamed file from MediUX. This feature is still in Beta so help out with some feedback here! This is also to keep theposterdb happy that we're not breaking their terms of service by scraping.
We (optionally) store an artwork ID in a Plex label against each movie, show, episode and collection, so it can check whether the same artwork is about to be uploaded again. If it detects the same artwork has been requested, it'll skip it, resulting in a quicker run time.
If you really want to upload artwork again, use the --force option at the command line, in the bulk file, or when entering the URL in the Web UI.
There are also a couple of new options for thePosterDb, which will allow you to also grab additional sets and additional posters from the same page. This is sometimes useful for big sets like the Marvel or Disney movies, where you'll otherwise need to specify multiple sets. This is against the terms of service of theposterdb.com so we encourage you to login, download the files you want, and upload them using this tool, rather than scraping. Once an API is available we'll switch over ASAP. If you regularly scrape the same ThePosterDB users, enable cache_user_scrapes so repeat scrapes only fetch new uploads instead of re-crawling the whole catalogue every time.
And there are other options such as per-URL filtering, fixing missing things that I found while I was using the tool (where I wanted to apply episode title cards but didn't like the season artwork for example). And if you don't like a particular piece of artwork or poster from a set, you can now exclude it. You can also exclude entire seasons or individual episodes, that way the app doesn't have to provess all the previous seasons for which you already have artwork applied.
Kometa support is offered in two different ways. The simple way is for the script to reset Kometa's overlay label so the next time Kometa runs the overlay gets added to the new artwork (reset_overlay set to true in config.json). Alternatively, if you're using Kometa's asset directory to manage all your Plex custom art, you can check the option to save the artwork to the Kometa asset directory instead of applying it directly to Plex (either in the GUI or by setting save_to_kometa to true in the config.json file). In that case, whenever Kometa runs again it will apply all new or updated artwork with its corresponding overlays. If this option is enabled, you will have to set the Kometa base directory (kometa_base in the config file, or with the appropriate text field in the GUI) to the base asset directory.
Kometa asset directory support works on the following assumptions:

Finally, if you're using the Kometa asset directory and you're running the script in a Docker container, the script will detect that it's running in Docker (via the RUNNING_IN_DOCKER environment variable) and will hardcode the Kometa base directory to /assets and the temp directory to /temp. You must therefore map the asset directory base and temp folders to these paths inside the container. This allows you to keep your real paths to your Kometa base and temp folders in the config.json file so if you run the script manually from outside the container it will also work. Your docker-compose.yml file should look like this:

restart: unless-stopped Sometimes the year on Plex and the year at the artwork provider is different. Use the --year argument to set the Plex year, so the artwork matches. Also available in the Web UI and bulk files.
Plus you can allow your bulk file to be auto-managed (cleaned and sorted for you). It's not really production ready yet but works just fine I think - do let me know!
Oh, last but not least, there's now a shiny new web UI so you can leave it running on your Plex Server and access it remotely!
With cache_user_scrapes enabled, the app already knows every poster your favourite ThePosterDB users have uploaded, so it can apply the right artwork within about a minute of Sonarr or Radarr importing something, instead of waiting for the next scheduled run. Turn on enable_webhooks, set a webhook_token and list the ThePosterDB users to apply from (in order of preference) under Webhook settings in the web UI, then add a webhook connection in each app:
- Radarr / Sonarr: Settings -> Connect -> + -> Webhook. URL
http://<artwork-uploader host>:4567/webhook/radarr(or/webhook/sonarr), Method POST. Tick only the "On File Import" trigger. Send the token as the connection's Password, or as a header: click the Advanced (cog) button and add a Header with KeyX-Webhook-Tokenand Value set to the token. The Test button is acknowledged so you can save the connection.
On an import the title is looked up in the cached index; if one of the configured users covers it, that single poster (plus season covers for the imported seasons, on TV) is applied through the same processing path as a normal scrape, so artwork labels, locked-artwork skips and Kometa asset mode all behave the same. Imports usually reach the webhook before Plex has scanned the new file, so the apply retries quietly for a few minutes, then gives up and leaves it to the next scheduled run. Ambiguous title matches (for example same-name remakes) are skipped rather than guessed, and nothing is applied when no configured user has the title. The endpoints return 404 if enable_webhooks is disabled.
Basic scheduler, so that you can leave this running and update all your artwork every day.
The basic version is available now on the bulk imports page, click on the clock to enable or disable per file.
It's there for when we have API access (and works for scrapers in the meantime) but is limited to running once a day which should be fine. If you enable cache_user_scrapes, a daily scheduled user scrape only fetches uploads that are new since the last run, so scheduled full-catalogue runs stay fast.
If you enable skip_locked_artwork, a scheduled user or bulk scrape will only fill items that are still on their default artwork and leave anything you've set by hand untouched, so it's safe to leave running against a curated library.
If you also enable allow_artist_updates, a scheduled scrape may additionally replace artwork it applied earlier when the same artist has posted a newer version of it. It still never touches artwork you set by hand (anything without one of this tool's artwork-ID labels) or artwork from a different artist, and it only ever moves forward to a newer upload, so runs settle on each artist's latest rather than flip-flopping. It needs both skip_locked_artwork and track_artwork_ids on. Because this writes over artwork the tool previously chose, take a note of your current posters before the first run if you want to be able to revert.
With local_library_matching enabled, a user-catalog scrape skips everything that isn't in your libraries without any web requests, so full-catalog runs take minutes rather than hours.
Additionally, you can configure one or more push notification services so you get a notification every time a scheduled bulk import job completes. Notifications are provided by Apprise. Configure the list of notification services by providing a comma-separated list of Apprise notification URLs through the web UI or via the apprise_urls variable in the config.jsonfile. Check the Apprise service list for details on the supported services and how to set them up and generate a notification URL for your favorite services.

This is a first project for me, I'm using it to learn Python so it will be constantly changing as I learn more. Install Python (if not installed already). You'll need version 3.12 or later.
Either download the Zip and extract all files into a folder, or Git Clone the repository

This is optional - if you don't do this, a new config.json will be created when you first run the utility and you'll be prompted to edit the config.
"base_url"
- The IP address (and port) of your Plex server. e.g. "http://12.34.56.78:32400/" or https://myplex.example.com if behind a reverse proxy like Nginx or Caddy.
"token"
- Your Plex token (can be found here).
"tv_library"
- The name of your TV Shows library (e.g., "TV Shows"). Multiple libraries are also supported (see the Multiple Libraries section below).
"movie_library"
- The name of your Movies library (e.g., "Movies"). Multiple libraries are also supported (see the Multiple Libraries section below).
"mediux_filters"
- See the list of filter options below. Anything not in this list will not be uploaded unless requested in the command line, in the bulk file or in the scraper URL in the Web UI.
"tpdb_filters"
- See the list of filter options below. Anything not in this list will not be uploaded unless requested in the command line, in the bulk file or in the scraper URL in the Web UI.
"track_artwork_ids"
- Setting this to
truewill result in speedy scraping re-runs. It uses Plex labels to store a special ID for the artwork, so that next time, we can check if the scraped artwork is the same as the current artwork and skip re-uploading. - By setting this to
false, it'll upload every artwork every time you run (like using the --force option for every item). This can result in long run-times, especially if you're using ThePosterDB. We recommend you leave this as true and use --force when you need to!
"skip_locked_artwork"
- Setting this to
truewill skip any artwork whose target field (poster, background or square art) is locked in Plex, unless--forceis used. Plex locks a field whenever artwork is deliberately set - manually or by an upload - so this makes scheduled bulk imports and user scrapes fill items still on default artwork while leaving anything you've already set alone. - Setting to
false(the default) keeps the existing behaviour where artwork is applied regardless of locks.
"allow_artist_updates"
- Setting this to
truelets a run replace artwork it applied earlier when the same artist has posted a newer version, even though the field is locked. Artwork you set by hand (anything without one of this tool's artwork-ID labels) and artwork from a different artist are still left alone, and it only moves forward to a newer upload. - Requires

"cache_user_scrapes"
- Setting this to
truekeeps a local index of each ThePosterDB user's uploads (a small SQLite file in your config directory), so scraping a user page again only fetches pages until it reaches uploads it has already seen - full-catalogue re-runs drop from hundreds of page requests to a couple, which is also much kinder to ThePosterDB. Everyuser_cache_refresh_daysdays the next scrape of that user re-crawls every page to pick up edited or deleted uploads. - Setting to
false(the default) crawls every page on every user scrape, exactly as before.
"user_cache_refresh_days"
- The number of days between full re-crawls of a cached user's uploads (default
7). Only used whencache_user_scrapesistrue.
"local_library_matching"
- Setting this to
true(the default) matches scraped artwork against your Plex libraries locally before fetching each poster's page, so big user scrapes skip everything you don't own without a web request and run dramatically faster. The poster page is still checked right before anything is uploaded, so nothing less accurate ever gets written. - Setting to
falserestores the previous per-poster lookups. Use this if items you own start logging "not available on Plex" because their Plex titles differ from the titles on ThePosterDB.
"auto_manage_bulk_files"
- Setting this to
truewill automatically add, label and sort URLs from the scrape tab into the currently loaded bulk import file. At the moment it won't auto-save, but I might add that later. - Setting to
falsewill leave the organisation of your bulk files up to you.
"reset_overlay"

"enable_webhooks"
- Set to
trueto enable the Sonarr/Radarr import webhook endpoints (/webhook/radarrand/webhook/sonarr).false(default) leaves them disabled and returning 404, so the app is unchanged unless you turn this on. Requirescache_user_scrapesso there is an index to look artwork up in.
"webhook_token"
- The shared secret that webhook requests must provide, in an
X-Webhook-Tokenheader, as the HTTP Basic password, or a?token=query parameter. Required whenenable_webhooksistrue.
"webhook_tpdb_users"
- A list of ThePosterDB user names to apply cached artwork from on import, in order of preference (first match wins). Only used when
enable_webhooksistrue.
"webhook_apply_delay"
- Seconds to wait after an import before applying artwork (default
30). The *arr apps fire the webhook the moment they import a file, usually before Plex has scanned it, so this gives Plex a head start; if the item still is not in Plex the apply retries for a few minutes before giving up.
"plex_connect_timeout"
- Timeout for connecting to or uploading artwork to Plex. Defaults to
10seconds.
"kometa_download_timeout"
- Timeout for downloading assets from ThePosterDB or MediUX. Defaults to
10seconds.
"upload_retry_attemts"
- Total number of times to attempt an operation, including the original attempt. Only transient errors (timeouts or server errors) are retried. Defaults to
3.
"upload_retry_backoff_seconds"
- Cool-down period before first retry of an operation. Doubles every subsequent retry. Defaults to
1second.
Both mediux_filters and tpdb_filters specify which artwork types to upload by including the flags below. Specify one or more in an array ["show_cover, "title_card"]. TPDb does not provide title cards, backgrounds or square art so these filters are not available in the web UI.

A NOTE ON SQUARE ART ASSETS: Even though MediUX supports per-season square_art assets for TV Shows, Plex only supports a single square_art asset at the show level. When saving assets to the Kometa asset directory, the first asset processed will be saved as square.ext and will be the one applied by Kometa. Subsequent assets will be saved as square_alt_#.ext in case you want to select an alternative one which you can rename as square.ext for Kometa to pick up. When applying artwork directly to a Plex server, Artwork Uploader will apply the first one and ignore the rest.
NEW!! If you want to use Docker, there is an artwork-uploader image in the Github repository ready for deploymnet!
Choose a location in your system, create an artwork-uploader folder (or name it however you like) and create a docker-compose.yml file inside. You can downlad and rename the provided docker-compose.example.yml file as a template, just customize your Time Zone and the Kometa asset and temp paths (or comment them out if you don't use Kometa) to deploy it with docker compose. Or just copy and customize the contents from here:

With no arguments, Artwork Uploader will start a webserver on port 4567 (this may change!)
The script supports various command-line arguments for flexible use.
Provide a link directly to set posters from a single set or boxset:

--add-sets will also parse any additional sets when using the Poster DB
--add-posters will also parse the additional posters section of the set, when using the Poster DB
--force will force the artwork to be updated even if it's the same as the one on plex already - or maybe you changed the artwork manually and want to override it...
--skip-locked will skip any artwork whose target field is locked in Plex (i.e. it's been deliberately set, manually or by a previous upload), unless --force is also used. This is the same as setting skip_locked_artwork to true in config.json, but per URL.
--allow-artist-updates lets a run replace artwork it applied earlier when the same artist has posted a newer version, while still leaving hand-set artwork and other artists' artwork alone. This is the same as setting allow_artist_updates to true in config.json, but per URL. It needs --skip-locked (or skip_locked_artwork) and track_artwork_ids to take effect.
--exclude <id1> [<id2> <id3> ...] will exclude the poster or artwork with the specified ID from being uploaded. Grab the ID from the session log...

- For TV shows, you can also exclude specific episodes or entire seasons:

--filters <filter1> [<filter2> <filter3> ...] will only upload the selected artwork types, based on the options below:
- show_cover
- background
- square_art
- season_cover
- title_card
- movie_poster
- collection_poster
--year <year> will override the year that it will look for in Plex. Sometimes the year in Mediux or TPDb doesn't match the year of the show or movie in Plex, therefore won't update the artwork. Use this option with the year in Plex to force a match. Will be ignored in bulk mode, where you should specify this on a per-line basis.
--kometa will save artwork your Kometa asset directory instead of applying it to Plex directly. If save_to_kometa is set to true in config.json then this argument is not necessary. If a specific artwork already exists in the Kometa asset directory, it will not be overwritten unles the --force argument is also specified.
--temp for testing purposes, will save artwork to a temporary directory temp_dir specified in config.json instead of the Kometa asset directory.
--stage, in conjuction with --kometa (or if save_to_kometais true in config.json), will download assets for TV show seasons and episodes not yet available in Plex. This can be useful if you run the script before a particular season or episode is downloaded by your automation. If stage_assets is set to true in config.json then this argument is not necessary. This option does not apply to the Specials season (Season 0).
--no-cache will crawl every page of a ThePosterDB user this run, ignoring the cached index (the index is still refreshed). Handy to force a full refresh of a user when you have cache_user_scrapes enabled. Works on the command line, in bulk files and in the Web UI.
These options can also be used in the URL scraper GUI, and in your bulk file, just add them straight after the URL in each line, for example

Import multiple links from a .txt file using the bulk argument:

The .txt file should contain one URL per line. Lines starting with # or // will be ignored as comments.

This error occurs when Python packages can't be imported. Common causes:

If you created a .venv but are still getting import errors, you're likely using system Python instead of venv Python:

If you see errors like this in your logs:
127.0.0.1 - - [13/Oct/2025 12:21:30] code 400, message Bad request version ('\x16\x03\x01...')
This is completely normal and harmless! These are TLS/SSL handshake attempts - something (your browser, browser extensions, or system security tools) is trying to connect via HTTPS to the HTTP-only Flask server.
Flask correctly rejects these with a 400 error since it doesn't support HTTPS by default. You can safely ignore these messages - they don't affect functionality.
If you want to access the app over HTTPS you can use a reverse proxy like Nginx or Caddy.
"Cannot reach Plex server" or Application hangs on startup
The application now has a 3-second timeout for Plex connections and will show a clear error message if it can't connect:

The web UI will still start, but you won't be able to upload artwork
until you fix the Plex connection in Settings.
How to fix:
- Verify Plex is running - Check that your Plex Media Server is started
- Test connectivity manually:

- Verify your Plex token is correct in

"Library not found"
- Check library names match exactly (case-sensitive)
- Verify library type (TV vs Movie) matches your config
- Library names in config must match exactly what's in Plex
"Can't scrape URL"
- Verify the URL is from a supported source (ThePosterDB or MediUX)
- Check your internet connection
- Some scrapers may be rate-limited; wait a few minutes and try again
Slow upload speeds
- ThePosterDB has a 6-second rate limit between requests
- Use
--filtersto only upload specific artwork types - Enable
track_artwork_idsin config to skip already-uploaded artwork
It's still work in progress, as is this entire app! I wouldn't consider it "production" ready but it's fully functional!
To target multiple Plex libraries, modify config.json as follows:

- Use the bulk argument to import your default
bulk_textfile specified inconfig.json. - Or, specify the path to a .txt file containing URLs as a second argument. Each URL will be processed to set the artwork for the corresponding media.
Both the mediux_filters and tvdb_filters options in config.json allows you to control which artwork types are uploaded to Plex on a global level. You can also set these global filters in the GUI and in the Web UI.
show_cover - Upload a cover for the TV show
background - Upload background images
square_art - Upload square art background images for mobile platforms
season_cover - Upload covers for each individual season
title_card - Upload title cards for individual episodes
movie_poster - Upload posters for movies
collection_poster - Upload posters for collections
- In
config.json, which will apply filters globally for each provider. - These options can also be set from the Web UI
- On the command line, by using
--filters <filter1> [<filter2> <filter3>...] - After the URL in a bulk file using the same format as you would on the command line
- After the URL in the Bulk Import tab of the Web UI or local GUI using the same format as you would on the command line
- In the scraper tab in the Web UI, where you can simply check boxes to set options and filters.
