Reproductive Healthcare Desert Project Dataset & Dashboard

This codebase builds a comprehensive longitudinal (2010-2024) dataset examining county-level access to abortion, contraceptive, and maternity, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) care in the United States. It also generates a public-use dashboard hosted here.

This work is funded by a Research and Development (R21) grant through the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Organization

• 01_setup/ is divided into subfolders representing each of the datasets used in this project. Each subfolder includes scripts written in R or Stata that, where feasible, can be used to obtain each dataset from its original source (e.g. any public-use API); datasets obtained by other means (e.g. personal correspondence) are described in detail for the purpose of reproducibility. These scripts also perform any necessary cleaning, recoding, and aggregation before passing revised data files to 02_data.
• 02_data/ contains one serialized data file from each subfolder in 01_setup
• 03_dashboard/ contains assets for the dashboard
• RHD-dashboard.Rmd is a Flexdashboard RMarkdown document that generates the dashboard

Other files include:

• rsconnect/ includes assets for the dashboard deployment and should not be edited by hand
• .gitignore lists all files and folders ignored by git; anything listed here will remain local to each contributor's copy of the repository. More information here.
• RHD.Rproj is an R Project file.
• README.md project-level documentation
