Issue

Closes #1247

Summary

  • Before: Guardrail entries in the config blob could only reference a validator_config_id, and the only way to turn one off was to delete it.
  • Now: Each entry can be either a reference or an inline validator spec (type, on_fail, per-type params). Both kinds take an is_enabled flag (default true).
  • Inline type is limited to InlineValidatorTypeEnum: gender_assumption_bias, pii_remover, profanity_free, topic_relevance_llm.
  • Disabled entries stay saved in the config version but are never fetched or sent to the guardrails service.
  • Validators are sent in blob order (_prepare_validators). Inline specs get stage stamped and is_enabled stripped, because the service's validator schemas forbid extra fields. on_fail is passed through, so the service applies its own default when it's omitted.
  • A reference the service doesn't return is dropped with a warning.
  • GuardrailEntry is an explicitly tagged union. Without the tag, InlineValidator (which allows extras) could swallow a reference dict that carries a type.

📝 Walkthrough

Guardrail configuration now accepts validator references and inline specifications. The service skips disabled entries, fetches configs for enabled references, and prepares the remaining validators for input or output validation.

Changes: Guardrail Configuration and Execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define guardrail entry variants
backend/app/models/llm/request.py, backend/app/tests/models/llm/test_request.py
ConfigBlob accepts validator references or inline specifications. References and inline validators include an enabled flag that defaults to true. Tests cover parsing, extra fields, and JSON round-trips.
Prepare and validate enabled entries
backend/app/services/llm/guardrails.py, backend/app/tests/services/llm/test_guardrails.py, backend/app/tests/services/llm/test_jobs.py, docs/wiki/modules/llm-call.md
The service skips disabled entries, fetches configs for enabled references, and prepares entries in blob order with the selected stage. Tests cover no-op cases, missing configs, inline validators, and input/output validation. The documentation describes the entry types and preparation behavior.

479-479: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Optional: use enum.StrEnum.

Ruff flags InlineValidatorTypeEnum (UP042) for inheriting from both str and Enum. StrEnum is available because the project requires Python 3.12 or later. The change does not alter JSON serialization. It is a low-value style fix.

Review comment at @backend/app/models/llm/request.py at line 479:
Update InlineValidatorTypeEnum to inherit from enum.StrEnum instead of combining
str and Enum, importing StrEnum as needed; preserve the enum members and their
existing JSON serialization behavior.
