Issue

Closes #1228

Summary

  1. This PR adds Sarvam bulbul:v3 and Elevenlabs eleven_v3 and eleven_v4 models to the TTS evaluation flow. The user can select multiple models including gemini-2.5-pro-peview-tts and gemini-3.1-flash-tts-preview to run tts evaulations.

  2. Since sarvam and elevenlabs do not support batch job processing, they are evaluated synchronously in their own celery task. The parent celery tasks enqueues as many celery tasks as their are synchronous jobs. Used threadpool with 2 worker each to process text rows in CSV for sync tasks.

  3. Stale check: Sarvam/ElevenLabs rows are only ever written by their own Celery task, so if that task is lost without cleaning up (hard time-limit kill, purged queue, crash loop), the TTS cron marks the model's leftover PENDING rows FAILED once the run is older than CELERY_TASK_TIME_LIMIT + TTS_SYNC_STALE_GRACE_SECONDS i.e (2100 seconds), so the run can't stay processing forever.

📝 Walkthrough

TTS evaluation now supports Gemini batch models and synchronous Sarvam and ElevenLabs models. The changes add provider-specific task dispatch and synthesis, per-model voice metadata, batch-result processing, and run-status finalization based on result rows.

Changes: TTS evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Models, language, and voice metadata
backend/app/services/tts_evaluations/constants.py, backend/app/api/routes/tts_evaluations/evaluation.py, backend/app/api/docs/tts_evaluation/start_evaluation.md, backend/app/tests/api/routes/test_tts_evaluation.py, docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.md
The supported model list now includes Gemini, Sarvam, and ElevenLabs models. Response metadata includes a voice for each model while retaining the legacy voice_name; documentation describes model routing and language fallback.

Submission creates result rows, routes Gemini models to batch submission, and queues synchronous models with the resolved language. Batch-job records are committed before provider calls.

Synchronous workers synthesize and upload audio, then update per-result status and metadata. Batch-result processing updates pending rows for the selected provider without finalizing the run.
Run polling and status finalization
backend/app/crud/tts_evaluations/cron.py, backend/app/crud/tts_evaluations/run.py, backend/app/tests/crud/tts_evaluations/test_cron.py, backend/app/tests/crud/tts_evaluations/test_run.py, docs/wiki/modules/evaluations.md
The TTS cron polls batch jobs and applies stale-row handling per provider. Run status is derived from result counts, and polling exceptions leave the run status unchanged.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bfffa

The new multi-provider TTS evaluation has two open problems. A slow or queued Sarvam/ElevenLabs job can be marked failed while it is still producing audio. Gemini results missing from the batch output can leave a run stuck in processing indefinitely. Fix the stale-window logic and handle missing batch rows before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f836b

Project-scoped access is preserved, but repeated execution and interruption can leave external work inconsistent with reported results. Compatibility between the new processing paths and existing recovery behavior remains partly unresolved.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new synchronous workflow lacks atomic ownership of external work and terminal transitions. Overlapping deliveries can both read PENDING results, perform credentialed synthesis, and upload independently named objects. The persistence helper also selects PENDING rows before ordinary ORM mutation, allowing overlapping writers that selected the same row to replace terminal outcomes. Timeout shutdown does not wait for running futures, so uploads can continue after failure cleanup and leave audio without a recorded owner. These conditions weaken containment of billed operations and synthesized-data lifecycle. Finished-before-read filtering and run-finalizer locking address narrower cases, not these races.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Sync-only runs enter processing without creating batch jobs, while the existing poll_tts_run branch treats absence of batch jobs as terminal failure. If such a run reaches that branch, ongoing credentialed work is reported failed even though chunks continue and can subsequently change its status again. This creates conflicting lifecycle ownership and can encourage duplicate evaluation attempts. A sync-aware exclusion in the outer polling selector was not established, so effective reachability remains unresolved rather than a verified production failure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — An authenticated project caller can now direct dataset text to the registered Sarvam or ElevenLabs synthesis service. The application uses that project's provider credentials and storage configuration; model selection does not supply arbitrary network destinations or credential identifiers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The API establishes project permission and tenant-scoped dataset ownership, and submission revalidates run ownership. The chunk consumer then trusts queued organization, project, and model identifiers: its result lookup checks run ID, result IDs, and PENDING status rather than independently binding every row to those identifiers. Queue-producer integrity is therefore part of the boundary; exposure to untrusted producers was not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Provider retries are bounded, with SDK-level retries disabled. Recovery attempts to fail remaining pending rows and finalize the run, but running synthesis futures are not awaited during shutdown, and recovery persistence calls are not independently guarded. These controls bound individual attempts without establishing durable reconciliation of interrupted work.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish durable execution ownership before external synthesis, enforce terminal transitions atomically, and reconcile uploaded objects against result ownership. Make polling explicitly execution-mode-aware so failure and recovery states have one consistent owner.

Lock the PENDING rows. Otherwise concurrent writers can overwrite a finished result.

bulk_update_pending_tts_results runs a plain SELECT ... WHERE status = PENDING and then the ORM emits UPDATE ... WHERE id = ?. Under READ COMMITTED, two overlapping transactions can both read the row as PENDING, and both UPDATEs succeed. The second one wins. That breaks the docstring promise that "a late writer can never clobber a finished result". When one attempt hits a transient error and the other succeeds, a SUCCESS row can turn into FAILED.

Overlapping writers can happen. poll_tts_run._on_already_succeeded sends Gemini result processing again on every cron tick while PENDING rows remain for that provider. Rows stay PENDING until each 50-row slice commits, so a large batch can be processed by two tasks at once. A redelivered sync chunk can overlap the same way.

Add with_for_update() to the select. Postgres then blocks the second transaction until the first commits, re-checks status = PENDING against the new row version, and skips rows that are no longer pending.

🔒️ Proposed fix
-    statement = select(TTSResult).where(
-        col(TTSResult.id).in_(list(updates_by_id.keys())),
-        TTSResult.status == JobStatus.PENDING.value,
-    )
+    statement = (
+        select(TTSResult)
+        .where(
+            col(TTSResult.id).in_(list(updates_by_id.keys())),
+            TTSResult.status == JobStatus.PENDING.value,
+        )
+        .order_by(TTSResult.id)
+        .with_for_update()
+    )

The order_by keeps the lock order the same across writers, which avoids deadlocks.

Make submission idempotent across task redelivery.

When Celery redelivers this task after worker loss, each attempt can create new rows for the same sample/model pairs. The task then reloads every pending row and submits batch work and sync chunks again. The sync task skips rows already completed, but it does not deduplicate the new pending rows. These duplicate rows can cause duplicate provider calls.

Make row creation and downstream submission idempotent. A guard that skips every run whose status is not pending is unsafe: the task sets the status to processing before it enqueues sync chunks, so redelivery after worker loss in that interval could leave pending results undispatched.

Make the stale-row check safe while a sync task is queued or running. The cron starts the stale window at run.inserted_at, not when the sync task starts. A queued or long-running task can therefore pass the window, and the cron then fails its rows and finalizes the run. The worker then writes SUCCESS without checking the row status, so a finalized run contradicts its rows. A queued task that starts after the window finds no pending rows and does no work.

  • backend/app/crud/tts_evaluations/cron.py#L185-L188: base staleness for sync models on a timestamp that the sync task records when it starts, not on run.inserted_at. Do not treat a model with no recorded start time as stale.
  • backend/app/services/tts_evaluations/sync_generation.py#L223-L229: update the row only while its status is still PENDING (WHERE status = 'pending'). Skip and log the write when no row matches.

In `cron.py` lines 185–188, base sync-model staleness on the timestamp recorded
when the sync task starts, and do not mark a model stale if that timestamp is
absent. In `sync_generation.py` lines 223–229, update the row only if its status
remains PENDING; if no row matches, skip the write and log that outcome.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fail pending rows that the Gemini batch output does not contain.

A row in result_map stays PENDING when no batch_result carries its ID. In backend/app/crud/tts_evaluations/cron.py, _on_already_succeeded then sees pending rows on every tick. It dispatches result processing again, and the run stays processing. The stale check does not cover this case, because it fails Gemini rows only when no batch job exists. The result is an unbounded loop of batch downloads, and the run never finishes.

After the loop, mark every record that is still PENDING as FAILED before you write the rows back.

Before persisting result_map in the Session block, mark every record still in
PENDING status as FAILED, set its missing-batch-output error details and update
timestamp using the existing conventions, and include it in the failed count.
