feat(middleware): Log request payload size - #1162
Conversation
Capture Content-Length in the HTTP request logger, expose it as the http.request.body.size span attribute, include it with the correlation ID in the access log line (shipped to Sentry and CloudWatch), and emit a Sentry byte-size distribution metric. Closes #1161 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <[email protected]>
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe middleware extracts request body size from ChangesRequest body telemetry
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The middleware now records request size and correlation data, but malformed negative Content-Length values can emit invalid telemetry, and some permitted SDK versions may not support the metrics API used by the change. The PR is otherwise localized and mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up on these bounded observability risks. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Reject negative Content-Length values.
_resolve_request_body_size converts Content-Length: -1 to -1. This value reaches the span, access log, and Sentry metrics. Return 0 when the parsed value is negative.

RFC 9110 Content-Length field value non-negative decimal
💡 Result:
In RFC 9110, the Content-Length header field value is defined by the ABNF production "Content-Length = 1DIGIT" [1]. This grammar explicitly mandates that the value must consist of one or more ASCII digits (0-9) [1]. Because the definition is restricted to "1DIGIT", only non-negative decimal integers are permitted; negative values (such as "-1") or non-numeric characters are invalid because they do not conform to the required ABNF [1]. A sender must not forward a message with an invalid Content-Length value, and a recipient must treat such invalid values as an error [1].

Test negative numeric Content-Length values as malformed.
"-1" is not covered. int("-1") succeeds, so _resolve_request_body_size returns -1. _log_http_request then uses this value for the span attribute and access log instead of the documented zero fallback.
Add "-1" to the parameterized values and clamp negative results to zero in _resolve_request_body_size.

For sentry-sdk version 2.20.0, what are the callable signatures of sentry_sdk.metrics.distributionandsentry_sdk.metrics.count?
💡 Result:
For sentry-sdk version 2.20.0, the callable signatures for sentry_sdk.metrics.count and sentry_sdk.metrics.distribution are identical [1]. Both functions accept a name, a numeric value, and optional unit and attributes parameters [1][2]. The signatures are as follows: sentry_sdk.metrics.count( name: str, value: float, unit: Optional[str] = None, attributes: Optional[dict[str, Any]] = None) -> None sentry_sdk.metrics.distribution( name: str, value: float, unit: Optional[str] = None, attributes: Optional[dict[str, Any]] = None) -> None In these signatures: - name: The identifier for the metric [3][2]. - value: The numeric measurement to record (typically a float) [1][4][2]. - unit: An optional string representing the unit of measurement (e.g., "millisecond", "byte") [1][3][2]. - attributes: An optional dictionary providing additional context (key-value pairs) for the metric [1][4][2]. These methods are defined within the sentry_sdk.metrics module [1]. Note that while the underlying implementation converts values to floats [1], the SDK accepts standard numeric types. Consistent with the Sentry metrics API design, these methods do not return a value [1].

Align the Sentry metric test doubles with a supported SDK version.
backend/pyproject.toml permits sentry-sdk 2.20.0, but that version provides metrics.increment, not metrics.count. _emit_sentry_metric calls metrics.count, and this test patches it. Raise the minimum SDK version to one that provides count. Then replace the lambdas at lines 127-136 and 162-166 with named helpers that use narrow annotations matching the locked 2.54.0 API.
