fix(api): the protected-resource document names the issuer Better Auth reports - #17
/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource advertised authorization_servers: ["<origin>/api/auth"], but Better Auth's mcp plugin sets the metadata issuer to its configured baseURL, which is the bare origin (AUTH_BASE_URL). RFC 8414 §3.3 requires a client to reject metadata whose issuer differs from the server it was pointed at. So OAuth/MCP clients that enforce this failed to sign in:
Sign-in failed: OAuth issuer mismatch: expected "https://oa-api.example.com/api/auth", received "https://oa-api.example.com"
Seen on a v0.8.0 self-host. After this change the document names the issuer Better Auth reports. That value is read off the auth instance (auth.options.baseURL, the same field the plugin uses) rather than rebuilt from AUTH_BASE_URL, so a trailing slash can't reopen the gap. The root metadata forwarder now dispatches to /api/auth/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server explicitly. That path is where Better Auth's routes live, which is a different thing from the issuer.
How you know it works
New migration test in oauth-dcr.test.ts: it follows authorization_servers[0] to its RFC 8414 well-known URL and asserts that the issuer equals it. I watched it fail first: expected 'http://localhost:3000' to be 'http://localhost:4000/api/auth'.
oauth-read-arm.test.ts asserted the old (wrong) /api/auth shape. It now pins the issuer.
Ran lint, build, tsc -p tests, pnpm run test (3369 passed), and pnpm run test:migration against Postgres 17 (687 passed; the 156 skipped need ClickHouse). Leak scan is clean.
On the affected self-host, serving the corrected document (as a Caddy override) fixed sign-in.
Anything a reviewer should look at twice
deps.auth?.options?.baseURL uses optional chaining on options because the unit and contract fakes pass an auth without options. It falls back to apiOrigin.
The path-insertion alias /.well-known/oauth-authorization-server/api/auth is kept for clients that derive it from the route prefix. Only its comment changed.
pnpm run format:check flags README.md on main already. That file is untouched here.
No operator action is needed. Self-hosters who worked around this with a reverse-proxy override can remove it after upgrading.
pnpm run verify passes locally (every step except the existing README.md format warning on main)
API surface changes start in packages/contracts/openapi/openapi.yaml (no API surface change)
Tracker changes still fit the byte budget (no tracker change)
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
OAuth discovery metadata now reports a consistent authorization server issuer across protected-resource and authorization-server details.
Authorization-server metadata is fetched from the correct location, improving the reliability of OAuth discovery.
Added end-to-end coverage to verify that the issuer reported during discovery matches the protected-resource metadata.
…h reports
/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource advertised `<origin>/api/auth` as its
authorization server, but Better Auth's mcp plugin sets the metadata `issuer`
to its configured `baseURL`, the bare origin. RFC 8414 §3.3 has a client reject
metadata whose issuer differs from the server it was told about, so MCP and
OAuth clients that enforce it failed to sign in with "OAuth issuer mismatch".
The issuer is now read off the auth instance, and the metadata forwarder
dispatches to Better Auth's `/api/auth` route on its own, since that path is
where the routes live and not what the issuer is.

Walkthrough
MCP protected-resource metadata now advertises Better Auth’s configured issuer, with the API origin as fallback. Authorization-server metadata requests are forwarded to Better Auth. Migration tests verify the advertised issuer matches the metadata response.

MCP uses Better Auth’s configured baseURL as the issuer when it is a string, and otherwise uses apiOrigin. Metadata forwarding requests Better Auth’s authorization-server document from resourceUrl/api/auth/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server. Migration tests check that the advertised issuer matches the returned metadata issuer and that authorization_servers contains ORIGIN.
OAuth/MCP sign-in may still fail issuer validation for a bare-origin configuration. Align the advertised issuer with the metadata response before merging.

Advertise Better Auth’s path-bearing issuer.
For a bare or trailing-slash AUTH_BASE_URL, the current code advertises the configured origin, but Better Auth 1.6.23 emits the issuer with its /api/auth base path. The forwarded route returns that metadata unchanged. The OIDC metadata override does not set jwt.issuer.
The migration assertion checks the desired equality but does not normalize or override the response. Add a trailing-slash regression case and derive the advertised issuer using Better Auth’s base-path rule.
