Summary

On OCI, every category that requests RDMA NICs attached its worker pods to a hard-coded network-operator/sriov-net NetworkAttachmentDefinition. That breaks on any other layout, such as AICR's nvidia-network-operator (#542). This implements ADR-103: the controller finds the NAD annotated k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics instead of assuming its name.

Only when the Workflow attaches the network. The controller builds each category once with a sentinel network name and lists NADs only if the sentinel survives overlay application. dcgm-level4, Nemotron on H100-class GPUs, other platforms, mlnxPerNode: 0 and an explicit networkAttachments list never list NADs.
Resolution. A match in the Certification's namespace wins. Equivalent copies resolve to the first in sorted order, with a Normal SecondaryNetworkDetection event. None, several that differ, a refused list or no NAD API fail the Certification with SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed before its Workflow is created. Transient list errors requeue.
RBAC. nvcre-manager-role gains get and list on network-attachment-definitions.k8s.cni.cncf.io. The list is uncached.
CLI. nvcrectl certification render --dry-run detects the same way; a refused list warns and renders the old default. Offline render keeps network-operator/sriov-net and says so on stderr. Without --platform, --dry-run now takes GPU and NIC defaults from the detected platform, as the controller does. Before, OCI GB200 previewed eight NICs, which would now fail a detection the controller never runs.

Behavior changes

A cluster whose network-operator/sriov-net carries the resourceName annotation renders exactly as before; the certification-oci-l40s-nccl golden is unchanged. NADs the Network Operator renders always carry it.
A NAD written without the annotation, or a differing network-operator/sriov-net left over or made by hand beside the platform's own, now fails up front with a message saying what to do.
--dry-run without --platform previews OCI L40S, GB200 and GB300, and Nscale GB300, with their platform node defaults.

Out of scope

[Bug]: A Certification can fail while its Workflow keeps running when Workflow creation re-runs into a terminal error #566: re-running Workflow creation for a Workflow that already exists can fail the Certification while that Workflow runs. The window is pre-existing; detection adds NAD-side triggers to it.
ADR-103 stays Proposed; release prep flips implemented ADRs to Accepted.

ADR-103 amendments

Decision 2, Zero row: rdmaDeviceAccess: hostPath alone does not avoid detection, since the fragment still renders, so the way forward pairs it with mlnxPerNode: 0; mlnxPerNode: 0 alone certifies without RDMA NICs.
Decision 3: NotFound, from a client that resolved the API before its CRD was removed, is terminal like NoMatch.
Decision 4: --dry-run takes node defaults from the detected platform, and a transient list error fails it.
The Testing plan and Consequences match the above.

Live test

On a 4-node OCI GB300 cluster deployed with AICR, whose only RDMA network is nvidia-network-operator/rdma-net (host-device chained with rdma), annotated for nvidia.com/mlnxnics:

nvcrectl certification render --dry-run detected nvidia-network-operator/rdma-net.
communication/nccl-all-reduce across all four nodes succeeded both ways. Each worker's k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/network-status showed rdma-net attached as net1 to net4 on four distinct VFs.
- enableMNNVL: false: NCCL ran over RoCE on all four VFs (IBext_v11). Peak bus bandwidth was 376 GB/s at 16 GiB, 94% of the 400 GB/s these nodes reach without MNNVL.
- enableMNNVL: true: one 16-GPU NVLink domain. Peak bus bandwidth was 910 GB/s at 16 GiB; NVLS in-switch reduction lets all-reduce bus bandwidth exceed the 900 GB/s link figure.
With a second annotated NAD whose config differed, in another namespace, a Certification with [diagnostics/dcgm-level4, communication/nccl-all-reduce] failed 18 s after creation with SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed, naming both NADs, and created no Workflow or pod.
On a cluster built from the platform template, where the NAD is network-operator/sriov-net, detection picked that NAD.
On main, the workers on the AICR cluster would have referenced network-operator/sriov-net, which does not exist there.

Walkthrough

The catalog now uses a configurable OCI secondary network instead of a fixed NetworkAttachmentDefinition name. The controller detects matching definitions when a rendered Workflow references the unresolved network, then rebuilds the Workflow or records a detection failure. The OCI RDMA network detection behaves as designed, and the controller fails closed before any Workflow is created. The platform-detection concept page overstates how many NetworkAttachmentDefinition lookups happen during preflight and creation. Correcting that wording is a small follow-up and does not block merging.

…R-103) On OCI, every category that requests RDMA NICs attached its worker pods to a hard-coded network-operator/sriov-net NetworkAttachmentDefinition. That fits one cluster layout. On AICR, which installs the Network Operator into nvidia-network-operator, and on any other layout, the pods get their nvidia.com/mlnxnics VFs but cannot attach their secondary networks. The controller now builds each category's Workflow with a sentinel network name first. Only when the resolved Workflow still carries it does it list NetworkAttachmentDefinitions, keep those annotated k8s.v1.cni.cncf.io/resourceName: nvidia.com/mlnxnics, and build again with the one it picks. A match in the Certification's namespace wins; equivalent copies resolve to the first in sorted order with a SecondaryNetworkDetection event; none, several that differ, a refused list or no NAD API fail the Certification with SecondaryNetworkDetectionFailed before the Workflow is created. Transient list errors are retried. Categories that attach nothing (dcgm-level4, Nemotron on H100-class GPUs, other platforms, mlnxPerNode: 0, an explicit networkAttachments list) never list NADs. The manager role gains get and list on network-attachment-definitions.k8s.cni.cncf.io, read uncached. nvcrectl certification render --dry-run detects the network the same way, and without --platform it now takes GPU and NIC defaults from the detected platform, as the controller does. Offline render keeps network-operator/sriov-net and says so. A cluster whose network-operator/sriov-net carries the resourceName annotation renders exactly as before. A NetworkAttachmentDefinition written without it, or a differing leftover beside the platform's own, now fails with a message saying what to do. Re-running Workflow creation for a Workflow that already exists can fail the Certification while that Workflow runs. The window is pre-existing; detection widens it, and NVIDIA#566 tracks it. Three things worth settling before merge; details inline.

Address review on NVIDIA#569. The controller now renders every category's first pass and detects the OCI RDMA network once before the first Workflow is created, so a missing or ambiguous NetworkAttachmentDefinition fails the Certification before the categories ahead of the one that attaches it run. Each category's creation still detects, to catch a NAD that changes during the run. The category build inputs move into prepareCategoryBuild so both paths render with the same config. nvcrectl certification render --dry-run with --platform oci on nodes of another platform now warns and renders the default instead of failing a detection the controller never runs there. ADR-103 and the docs say that detection trusts every namespace in which a NetworkAttachmentDefinition can be created, that NVCRE does not keep a list of platform namespaces, and that a NAD in the Certification's namespace or an explicit networkAttachments list pins the network.
