fix(controller): record the MPI launcher's log when a Job times out (#546) - #568
When a Job exceeds timeoutPerJob, captureTimeoutLog is meant to record the MPI launcher's log, which has the NCCL output. It never could. It listed pods by nvcre.nvidia.com/job, and NVCRE injects that label only into the worker replicatedJob, so the launcher was never in the list. A timed-out nccl-all-reduce, nccl-all-gather or nccl-alltoall Job recorded the first running worker's sshd output under reason Timeout, with no NCCL in it.
Fix (pkg/controller/workflow_controller.go): captureTimeoutLog now adds the workload's launcher pods to the candidates and prefers a running one. It uses launcherPods, the same live lookup by JobSet labels that captureFailureLog uses since #529, so it also skips launchers from a previous workload generation and evicted or preempted ones. On a timeout the launcher is still running, so the early read #529 needed for failed launchers isn't needed here.
launcherPods (pkg/controller/job_controller.go) goes from a JobReconciler method to a function of the cached and live readers, so the Workflow controller can call it. Its two existing callers pass r.Client, r.APIReader, and its behavior doesn't change.
Workloads without a launcher still record their first running node pod. A failed launcher lookup falls back to that too, since the capture is best-effort.
Launchers are still read live through podread.WorkloadPods, so test/readpolicy still holds.
Docs: a short amendment to ADR-102, whose Notes left this for its own change, and one sentence on the timeout record in the failureLog row of docs/api-reference/job.md.
TestTimeoutLogCapture (pkg/controller/failure_log_test.go, golden cases in pkg/controller/testdata/timeout-log-capture/) reuses the captureFailureLog fixture, where launchers carry the JobSet labels and not the job label, and only the live reader sees them:
launcher-running-without-job-label: a running launcher next to two running workers. The record names the launcher. Without the fix it names j-workload-node-0-0.
previous-generation-launcher-ignored: a running launcher from before a checkpoint restart is skipped for the current one. Without the fix it names the worker.
no-launcher-first-running-worker: without a launcher, the first running node pod is recorded, as before.
The fixture now sets status.phase: Running on running pods, since captureTimeoutLog filters on phase. The existing TestFailureLogCapture and TestLauncherFailureLog goldens don't change.
Locally: gofmt, make vet, golangci-lint run ./... (0 issues), make check-agents-sync verify-doc-links verify-license-headers, unit tests across all packages, and cmd/integration. In the full integration run one workloadrun-gangscheduler-* case can report the Workflow condition reason JobCreated instead of JobRunning. That happens on main as well, and those cases pass on their own with this change.

Timeout capture now considers launcher pods alongside workload pods. It prefers a running launcher, then a completed launcher, a running node pod, or a completed node pod. The selected container determines the recorded exit code. If opening the log stream fails, the function preserves a previously prepared failure-log record.
NVIDIA/cluster-readiness-engine#546: The change adds launcher pods to timeout log candidates and prefers launcher logs, addressing the reported worker-log selection.
A transient cache miss can record an obsolete launcher log instead of the current workload’s timeout diagnostics; use the live workload lookup before merging.

Explanation
Issue [#546] requires timeout capture to select the MPI launcher log, prefer the launcher over worker pods, retain the node-pod fallback, and test a launcher without the job label. captureTimeoutLog now ranks a running launcher before workload pods and uses the running node-pod fallback when no launcher is available. launcherPods filters the current workload generation. TestTimeoutLogCapture covers the missing job label, an old launcher, and the no-launcher fallback. The optional end-to-end test is not required.

Explanation
The changes stay within [#546]. The shared launcherPods refactor supports the required lookup. Container exit handling, failure-log preservation, tests, and documentation support timeout-log selection and recording. No unrelated API, CRD, resource, security, or controller behavior change is established.

When no running launcher is available, captureTimeoutLog can record a running worker. When no pod is running, it can record an eligible terminal pod. The current sentence limits the worker fallback to workloads without a launcher and omits the terminal-pod fallback.

Thanks for the quick turnaround on the launcher ordering. A running launcher now beats a failed one, and finished-launcher-not-preferred-over-running-launcher covers it. A few things are left:
A running worker shouldn't displace a finished launcher. See the inline comment on workflow_controller.go.
previous-generation-launcher-ignored doesn't exercise the generation filter. See the inline comment on its input.
Nit: in the launcherPods doc comment in job_controller.go, the reflow left "is / not among the / pods that label selects" ragged.
Timeout capture now picks a running launcher, then a launcher that already finished, then a running node pod, then a node pod that finished. The worker fixture is renamed to finished-launcher-preferred-over-running-worker and names the launcher.
previous-generation-launcher-ignored now uses j-workload-launcher-0-0-a (created 10) and j-workload-launcher-0-0-b (created 110). With the creation-time check replaced by true || it fails, along with the two failure-path generation cases.
Reflowed the launcherPods doc comment.
I also updated the failureLog row in docs/api-reference/job.md and the ADR-102 amendment to match the new order.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Clean fix, and the preference order reads correctly to me: running launcher, finished launcher, running node, finished node, with ties keeping the first pod so the old "first running worker" behaviour survives where no launcher ran. i < len(launchers) is right given the append(launchers, pods...) above it, and the test/readpolicy claim holds, since that policy only forbids naming corev1.PodList outside pkg/podread and this adds none. TestTimeoutLogCapture's five cases and the fifteen existing TestFailureLogCapture and TestLauncherFailureLog cases pass, and golangci-lint run ./pkg/controller/... is clean.
One question inline about the exit code, and DCO is red because 8d8c530a has no Signed-off-by trailer. acebf2e8 and 31d43407 both have one.
captureTimeoutLog listed only pods labelled nvcre.nvidia.com/job, which
NVCRE injects into the worker replicatedJob alone, so the MPI launcher
was never a candidate. A timed-out nccl-all-reduce, nccl-all-gather or
nccl-alltoall Job recorded the first running worker's sshd output,
with no NCCL in it, under reason Timeout.
It now adds the workload's launcher pods from launcherPods, the same
live JobSet label lookup captureFailureLog uses since NVIDIA#529, and prefers
a running launcher. launcherPods becomes a function of the cached and
live readers so the Workflow controller can call it. Workloads without
a launcher still record their first running node pod, and a failed
launcher lookup falls back to that as well.
TestTimeoutLogCapture covers a running launcher without the job label
next to running workers, a previous-generation launcher, and a workload
without a launcher. ADR-102 gets a short amendment and the failureLog
row in docs/api-reference/job.md describes the timeout record.

A finished launcher no longer stops the search or beats a running pod;
it is only a fallback. Addresses the CodeRabbit note on NVIDIA#568.

Timeout log capture now picks, in order: a running launcher, a launcher
that already finished, a running node pod, then a node pod that finished.
A launcher that failed or succeeded just before the timeout holds the
diagnosis, while a worker only has sshd output.
The worker fixture is renamed to finished-launcher-preferred-over-running-worker
and now names the launcher. previous-generation-launcher-ignored sorts the
old launcher first, so it fails without the generation filter. Also reflows
the launcherPods doc comment and updates the failureLog docs.

captureTimeoutLog set the pod, node, reason Timeout and tail, never the
exit code, so a finished launcher that exited 1 was recorded with exit
code 0. Preferring a finished launcher over a running worker made that
the common case.
timeoutContainer now picks the container the record reads. A pod that
already finished is read as a failure record is, through
failedContainerOf, so the record carries the code the container exited
with, and a launcher that failed in its wait-for-workers init container
is read there instead of from its main container, which never started.
Otherwise it is the main container as before, with its exit code if it
has terminated. A running pod's record keeps exit code 0. The reason
stays Timeout, since it describes the Job. The record also keeps the
exit code when the log cannot be streamed.
finished-launcher-preferred-over-running-worker now expects exit code 1
and the new finished-launcher-init-container-failure case covers the
init container. Both fail on the previous code. The ADR-102 amendment
and the failureLog row in docs/api-reference/job.md say so.

Thanks for the review. I re-signed the three commits with git rebase --signoff, with trees and messages otherwise unchanged, and force-pushed, so DCO should pass now. On top are the exit code fix and a merge of main.

captureTimeoutLog replaced job.Status.FailureLog with the timeout record
before opening the selected pod's log stream. When OpenStream failed, the
Job was left with a record that had no tail, and a record made earlier,
such as a launcher failure read by launcherFailureLog, was lost.
The record the Job already carries is now restored on that error path.
Without one, the timeout record is kept, so the pod, node, exit code and
reason are still reported.
The pod log test server can now fail a pod's log endpoint, and two
TestTimeoutLogCapture cases cover both paths:
log-unavailable-keeps-earlier-record and
log-unavailable-without-earlier-record.

Use the live reader for the workload generation lookup.
captureTimeoutLog runs before workload deletion. During a checkpoint restart, old launcher pods can remain while the replacement workload uses the same name. If the cache returns NotFound while the API still has the replacement, launcherPods returns all live launchers without filtering their generation. The timeout ranking can then select an old launcher over a current node pod.
This preserves the existing behavior when the workload is absent from the API, while preventing a transient cache miss from bypassing generation filtering.
