Description

Adds the RealHand FFG Glove integration, including:

  • USB serial discovery and left/right glove identification
  • Calibrated 26-joint OpenXR hand-tracking output
  • Human-hand calibration, diagnostics, and a skeleton viewer
  • Device documentation and tests

This pull request covers the glove integration only. The P7 arm and L6/O6/L20 hand integrations are being prepared separately.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

  • 95 Python tests and 12 native tests passed
  • Validated the example wheel and installed entry points in an isolated environment
  • Built the documentation and ran the linter and formatter

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

This change adds RealHand support for L6, O6, and L20 assemblies. It includes a serial glove plugin, Python profiles and retargeters for pose, hand-tracking, controller, and glove inputs, plus tools for glove calibration and asset retrieval. A bimanual P7 example combines these inputs into an action output. The change also adds build integration, tests, and device and retargeting documentation.

A stalled glove connection can halt glove updates and consume CPU; the device catalog also directs users to the wrong plugin location. Bound the serial write retry before merging and correct the link.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

The write loop busy-spins on EAGAIN and has no bound.

SerialGlove opens the descriptor with O_NONBLOCK. When the TTY output buffer is full, ::write returns EAGAIN, and the loop retries immediately with no wait. If the device stops draining, for example because it has stalled or flow control is holding it, send never returns. The plugin update thread then pins a CPU core. The 1 s stale-timeout check in poll_endpoint cannot run while send is blocked, so drop_endpoint never runs either.

Fix: on EAGAIN, wait on select/poll for writability with a short timeout. If the timeout expires, throw so that poll_endpoint drops the endpoint.

Legend: 🚫 BLOCKER = merge-blocking | 💡 SUGGESTION = meaningful improvement | 🧹 NIT = precise small correction

Finding
🚫 plugin.yaml:9 - The glove publishes only joint_state (sensor_0…sensor_20), whose only consumer is RealHandFFGGloveRetargeter, so the glove is hard-wired one-to-one to the L6/O6/L20. Glove plugins must publish the standard 26-joint OpenXR hand_tracker on /hand/left and /hand/right, as Manus, Wuji, Haptikos and Sharpa Avatar do, so that any HandInput retargeter (DexHandRetargeter, Sharpa, Wuji, your own RealHandHandTrackingRetargeter) can drive any dex hand from it.
🚫 realhand_ffg_glove_plugin.cpp:85 - now - steady_clock::time_point::min() overflows (UB; UBSan flags it and it evaluates to about -9.2e18), so the L93 check < kDiscoveryPeriod is always true and discover() returns on every call; no port is ever opened. The same pattern at L137/L177 means the Position query would never be sent even after that is fixed, and L164 repeats it on disconnect.
🚫 realhand_ffg_glove_serial.cpp:197 - Without --ports (the documented default), every /dev/ttyUSB*/ttyACM* is opened without TIOCEXCL, re-tcsetattr'd at each probe baud, tcflush'd and sent Version frames every 2 s. The in-tree so101_leader and rebot_devarm_leader plugins also open ttyACM* non-exclusively, so running either alongside this one rewrites their port's baud rate and injects bytes onto a motor bus.
💡 realhand_ffg_glove_plugin.cpp:115 - Probing runs on the publish thread at 4 bauds × 250 ms per silent port, and discover() keeps probing after both gloves are connected. So any extra serial device freezes joint output for about 1 s out of every 2, and two silent ports push shutdown past the plugin manager's SIGKILL window.
💡 realhand_ffg_glove.py:113 - If one side has no calibration, the other glove's data is used silently; this contradicts the device page's "glove-specific measurements" and the documented --side left flow. Also, at L391 reset() runs after map(), so the reset frame is written unfiltered from the stale baseline (output snaps, then drifts).
💡 retargeters/__init__.py:149 - The six hand/glove entries declare extra None, but realhand/__init__.py:6 eagerly imports arm.py, which needs scipy. On a base install they raise a bare ModuleNotFoundError with no install hint.
💡 realhand_ffg_glove_plugin.cpp:141 - Diagnostics go to std::cout/std::cerr (also L128, L161, main.cpp:99), and hand.py:485 uses print() behind the new P7_REALHAND_DEBUG_CONTROLLER* env vars. AGENTS.md → Logging requires the isaaccapture logger tree, and under ISAACCAPTURE_LOG_SOCKET these lines never reach the session log.
💡 fetch_realhand_assets.py:109 - Non-LFS files get no hash, so L153 accepts any file of the right size. At the pinned revision, 33 of 175 files fall in this bucket, including p7_l20/meshes/p7/L8_Link.STL and R8_Link.STL referenced by the pinned URDF, and the license files.
💡 realhand.rst:59 - pip install 'isaaccapture[retargeters-lite]' pulls a released wheel without retargeters.realhand, and --target python_package only stages files, so the example fails on import.
🧹 devices.yaml:228 - The schema header says url is the manufacturer's product page and acquire must not just repeat it; both point at the SDK repo (L243).
🧹 test_realhand_example.py:11 - Hard-coded parents[4] (also test_realhand_asset_fetcher.py:13) and examples-only tests under core/retargeting_engine; tests/AGENTS.md asks for repo_paths.py and tests/python/examples/<example>/.

Publish calibrated 26-joint OpenXR hand skeletons from RealHand FFG
gloves and use the official DexHandRetargeter for L6, O6, and L20.

Unify calibration across all three hands and update examples,
documentation, and tests for the current Isaac Capture structure.

Please split this PR into three, one per device, so each part can be reviewed and merged on its own:

  1. Glove (stays in this PR): the FFG glove plugin, its C++ tests and CMake option, the device page and devices.yaml row, and the glove calibration and diagnostics tools. The hand CTS take belongs here.
  2. Dex hands (new PR): the L6, O6 and L20 configs for DexHandRetargeter
  3. Arm (new PR): the P7 retargeters

Put the RealHand examples in their own examples/realhand/ directory, not in examples/teleop. The code review follows separately.

Keep this PR focused on the FFG device plugin, standard OpenXR hand output, calibration, diagnostics, and human-skeleton viewer. Move arm and dexterous-hand integration out of this contribution.

Address review feedback on opt-in builds, example packaging, deterministic tests, tracking validity, serial discovery, argument validation, and official CTS recording setup.
