feat(cve): replace AIQ researcher with upstream implementation - #207
Replace the AIQ-driven CVE researcher with the native implementation from cve-agent-v3, including its bounded agent loop, CVE/GHSA/OSV resolution, report validation, and remediation provenance checks.
Carry upstream pipeline contracts through exploitability analysis, VEX publication, image platform selection, webhooks, evaluation, and report discovery.
Remove the AIQ dependency and submodule, plus stale AIQ references in the Docker build, CI, and deployment notebook.
Preserve public develop's default model and inference endpoint, along with its checked-in evaluation dataset.
Validation
Full unit suite: 1,139 passed. After the final incomplete-scan prompt change, 17 focused tests passed.
Flake8, all NAT YAML config validations, staged copyright check, and git diff --check passed.
Live uncached end-to-end run: CVE-2024-9287 against nvcr.io/nvidia/morpheus/morpheus:25.06-runtime completed in 209 seconds. CVE Researcher, Container Analyzer, Exploitability Analyzer, and VEX Categorizer all succeeded. Exploitability returned ENVIRONMENT ISOLATED; VEX returned not_affected / code_not_reachable, matching the checked-in fixture label.
Review notes
This PR synchronizes the relevant upstream source behavior into the public branch while retaining the public deployment defaults and evaluation fixture. It does not merge the upstream branch's Git history.
The local NVIDIA model client emits a warning that the configured model is not listed as tool-capable; the live run completed tool calls successfully.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Vulnerability analysis now supports ecosystem identifiers alongside CVE and GHSA IDs, with alias resolution and remediation verification.
Choose an OCI image platform for extraction and analysis; linux/amd64 is the default.
Results include package and version hints, image platform, and sanitized VEX details. Individual requests can suppress webhook delivery.
A preflight endpoint reports provider readiness, and PB Eval spreadsheets can be sampled into benchmark CSV files.
Improvements
Report validation and package scans better flag incomplete or unverified results; image configuration output redacts sensitive values.
Webhook retries support unlimited rounds when the maximum is set to 0.
Documentation
Updated setup, input, platform, and result guidance.
This pull request changes a CodeRabbit configuration file. Because it comes from a fork or its author is not a repository collaborator, reviews use only the configuration from the target branch. The proposed configuration will take effect after it is merged.

Walkthrough
This change replaces the AI-Q researcher with a native researcher. It adds ecosystem identifiers, alias and remediation verification, report validation, platform-aware image extraction, VEX details, webhook controls, cache validation, and evaluation tooling. It also removes related submodules, dependencies, workflows, and plugin code.

The researcher accepts ecosystem identifiers, resolves aliases, validates CVE records, verifies remediation provenance, runs bounded agentic research, and returns diagnostics.
Identifier resolution and caching src/vuln_analysis/utils/*resolution.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/github_remediation.py, src/vuln_analysis/pipeline/cache.py, src/vuln_analysis/pipeline/stage1.py
CVE, GHSA, and OSV lookups classify aliases and failures. Stage caches store report hashes and provenance metadata and reject invalid or stale entries.
Pipeline and result propagation src/vuln_analysis/pipeline/*, src/vuln_analysis/data_models/output.py, src/vuln_analysis/data_models/state.py
Image platform and scanning behavior src/vuln_analysis/utils/image_platform.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/image_extraction.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/pre_triage.py, src/vuln_analysis/tools/package_tools.py
Image platforms are normalized and verified during digest, export, config retrieval, and cache reads. Package scans report incomplete evidence when metadata or binary inspection is skipped or bounded.
Webhook and API behavior src/vuln_analysis/server/fastapi_worker.py, src/vuln_analysis/server/webhooks/*, src/vuln_analysis/server/webhooks/envelope.py
The API adds live preflight and generic vulnerability filtering. Webhook delivery supports per-request suppression, unlimited retry rounds with 0, cancellation state preservation, and bounded result sanitization.
Evaluation input and report handling gain trusted roots and platform support. Documentation describes the native workflow. AI-Q submodule, plugin modules, dependencies, CI workflows, and secret baseline are removed or updated.
Analysis may reuse results from a different model, misrepresent scan evidence, expose a credential, or accept unsafe remediation advice. These concerns should be resolved before merge.

Align the smoke-test defaults with the shipped judge config.
When CVE_REPORT_JUDGE_MODEL and DEFAULT_MODEL_NAME are unset, the script uses nvidia/nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra. That name has a doubled nvidia/ prefix. It also differs from the default in config-cve-report-eval.yml, which is nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b. The fallback base URL is inference-api.nvidia.com, but the configs default to integrate.api.nvidia.com. With these defaults, the smoke test does not check the endpoint and model that the evaluation uses, and it can fail with a model-not-found error.

Remove the fixture directory so the test checks root recovery in the new repository layout. As per path instructions, “Security and behavior changes need regression tests.”

The concern is refuted. Stage 1 now validates cache metadata before reuse. It requires _CVE_CACHE_METADATA_VERSION == 6, matching report policy, namespace, identifiers, hints, and report hash. The documented model default contradicts the shipped default.
This section documents the override examples as nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b. The config table in the same notebook, README.md, and every shipped config use nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b.
The PR states that it preserves the default model. If a user copies these .env lines, they switch models without changing cache_namespace. The pipeline then reuses cached Ultra results under the Super model.
Use the Ultra model name here, or add a note that changing the model requires a new cache_namespace.

Update the model values in the documented environment-variable examples to use
the shipped default, nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b, so copying them does not
silently switch models while reusing the existing cache_namespace.

Learning: In filesystem sandbox tests that call configure_allowed_paths(...), retain explicit local try/finally handling to reset the returned token through filesystem_tools._allowed_paths_var. This keeps token ownership visible and reset order deterministic; do not add a public production reset API solely to deduplicate test setup.

44-44: The smoke-test default model does not match the evaluation config.
If CVE_REPORT_JUDGE_MODEL and DEFAULT_MODEL_NAME are unset, the script uses openai/openai/gpt-5.6-sol with inference-api.nvidia.com. config-cve-report-eval.yml defaults to nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b with integrate.api.nvidia.com. As a result, the smoke test does not exercise the model or endpoint that the evaluation uses. The doubled openai/ prefix also looks like a model-not-found risk. Use the same defaults as the shipped config.
418-418: Bound on the second-waiter wait is now in place.
The changed line wraps the wait in asyncio.wait_for(..., timeout=2). This addresses the earlier hang concern for this site. It matches the retrieved learning: wait on an observable signal with a deadline. It does not use a fixed sleep.
486-486: Bound on the cancellation-seen wait is now in place.
The changed line uses asyncio.wait_for(..., timeout=2). If producer cancellation is lost, the test fails with TimeoutError instead of hanging. This addresses the earlier comment.

A failed Go binary scan returns found=False, scan_complete=False, but a distro-package match replaces that result and its completeness flag. I reproduced an incomplete runc binary scan followed by a patched Debian package producing early_exit=True / NOT APPLICABLE. This can overlook vulnerable copies compiled into other binaries. Preserve the incomplete evidence and continue to Phase 2.

The validator skips an entire sentence containing words such as no or not. With verified fixed version 3.12.9, it rejects “Upgrade to 3.12.8.” but accepts “Upgrade to 3.12.8 because no API changes are required.” I reproduced this through the full report validator. Unrelated negation must not suppress upgrade validation.

/commits/{version} accepts branch names as well as tags. A version-named branch containing the patch therefore produces status="verified" without any release tag; a mocked reproduction confirmed this. Resolve an explicit tag reference before checking containment.

When active_env_installation is None, report_generator.py still falls back to installations[0]. For Go binaries, the list order follows the scan order, so the report's "Default Installation Version" row can change with scan order even though each installation is marked unknown activation. Keep the unknown status in the report, and show "N/A" when no installation is confirmed as default.
The same fallback in exploitability_analyzer.py (lines 734-736) can select installations[0] as the primary installation for the Phase 2 context. Apply the same guard there.
Suggested fix
if pkg.found and pkg.installations:
- primary = pkg.active_env_installation or pkg.installations[0]+ primary = pkg.active_env_installation+ if primary is None and not any(+ inst.assessment.activation_status == "unknown"+ for inst in pkg.installations+ ):+ primary = pkg.installations[0]
fs_location = ", ".join(inst.location for inst in pkg.installations)
- default_version = primary.version- default_version_evidence = primary.installation_id+ if primary is not None:+ default_version = primary.version+ default_version_evidence = primary.installation_id+ else:+ default_version = "N/A"+ default_version_evidence = "No default installation confirmed"
pkg_in_fs = "Yes"
Add regression tests for these cases:
Multiple Go binaries with different versions. Confirm that the report does not change when the scan order changes.
A patched early-exit report. Confirm that the default row does not show the first Go installation.

Review comment at @src/vuln_analysis/utils/pre_triage.py at line 1183:
Update the installation-selection logic in report_generator so it uses the first
installation only when no activation status is unknown; when no default is
confirmed, keep the unknown status and show “N/A” for the default version. Apply
the same guard in exploitability_analyzer when selecting the Phase 2 primary
installation. Add regression tests covering Go installations with differing
versions in reversed scan order and patched early-exit reports.

Preserve shell single-quote boundaries during redaction.
For the shell command app --password 'abc\' --api-key 'real-secret', the backslash is literal inside the first single-quoted value. This pattern instead treats the closing quote as escaped and consumes the next flag. The output retains real-secret and sends it to the analyzer prompt.
Handle shell single quotes separately and add a regression test with two sensitive flags.
As per path instructions, check “command arguments” in security-sensitive image processing.

Use a poller that supports high file descriptors.
On Linux, select() cannot monitor descriptors numbered 1024 or higher. (man7.org) When the pipe has such a descriptor, this code discards its output and marks the scan incomplete. Go modules that require the strings fallback are then missed.
Use select.poll() or selectors.DefaultSelector, and add a regression test with a high descriptor. As per path instructions: “Check ... fail-safe pre-triage/VEX conclusions.”

64-bit is parsed as a second version claim. With only 3.12.9 verified, the validator can append unverified_fixed_version_claim. The existing repair path only changes affected-version table cells and does not remove this qualifier from remediation prose.

Extract underscore-formatted versions before validation.
For We recommend version _3.12.8_., _versions_in rejects the version because underscores are word characters. The claim is skipped, so a report with verified version 3.12.9 passes despite recommending 3.12.8. Normalize Markdown delimiters before the initial version check and extraction. Add regression tests for _ and __ delimiters. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Validate the recommendation operator.
The extractor discards the operator before comparing the version with provenance. If 3.12.9 is verified, We recommend version <=3.12.9 passes validation even though it recommends vulnerable versions below 3.12.9. Preserve and validate the operator, or reject unsupported upper-bound recommendations. Add a regression test for this case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
