Summary

  • Add a comprehensive GitHub Actions CI pipeline for pull requests, pushes to develop and release/**, and manual runs.
  • Validate project configuration, lint source and infrastructure files, run unit tests with coverage, scan source and dependencies, and build Python packages.
  • Scan the checked-out repository with Trivy, generate a CycloneDX SBOM, and smoke-test the runtime container build.
  • Remediate existing lint, security, and reliability findings exposed by the new CI checks so the pipeline starts from a passing and actionable baseline.

CI coverage

The workflow includes the following jobs:

  • Validate lockfile and configuration
    • Checks out the AIQ submodule recursively.
    • Verifies uv.lock, compiles Python sources, and validates every shipped NAT configuration.
  • Lint and repository checks
    • Runs Flake8 against application source.
    • Runs ShellCheck against repository shell scripts.
    • Verifies copyright headers on changed files.
  • Unit tests
    • Runs the full test suite with JUnit output and XML/HTML coverage artifacts.
    • Enforces a 70% coverage floor.
  • Source security checks
    • Scans tracked files against a reviewed detect-secrets baseline.
    • Runs Bandit with directory exclusions and reviewed, site-specific suppressions.
  • Dependency audit
    • Exports locked runtime dependencies and publishes a pip-audit JSON report.
    • Remains advisory while existing dependency findings are remediated or reviewed.
  • Container and Compose validation
    • Runs Hadolint against the runtime Dockerfile.
    • Renders both the base Compose configuration and the NIM overlay.
  • Package build
    • Builds the wheel and source distribution.
    • Smoke-tests package imports and console-script metadata from the wheel.
  • Repository scan and container build smoke test
    • Runs for pushes to develop and release/**, and manual dispatches after the core test and validation jobs pass; it is skipped for pull requests.
    • Scans repository dependencies and infrastructure configuration while excluding the separately maintained AIQ submodule.
    • Generates a CycloneDX repository SBOM and publishes an advisory Trivy report.
    • Builds the runtime image as a blocking smoke test without publishing it.

The existing secret-gated VACS end-to-end workflow remains separate and unchanged.

Remediation included in this PR

Introducing blocking lint and source-security checks exposed existing findings that needed either correction or explicit review. This PR therefore includes the related remediation required to establish a reliable baseline:

  • Resolve Hadolint findings by tightening package installation, apt cleanup, shell pipe handling, and variable quoting in the Dockerfile.
  • Replace global Bandit rule exclusions with documented, site-specific # nosec annotations.
  • Narrow broad CVE report fallback exceptions to expected read and decode failures.
  • Bound strings output during Go binary pre-triage and guarantee child-process cleanup on truncation or timeout.
  • Preserve truncated, failed, or unavailable Go binary scans as incomplete evidence rather than deterministic package absence.
  • Render incomplete package verification as unknown and require independent package discovery before an absence verdict.
  • Stabilize process-watchdog cancellation coverage by waiting for observable child progress instead of relying on fixed timing.
  • Add regression coverage for bounded output, timeout cleanup, and incomplete-verification behavior.

Design notes

  • Actions and containerized lint/scan tools are pinned to immutable revisions or manifest digests where available.
  • CI uses Python 3.13 and the repository's tested uv version.
  • Repeated runs for the same workflow and ref use concurrency cancellation so stale runs do not consume resources.
  • Dependency and repository vulnerability scans use continue-on-error intentionally. They produce reviewable artifacts without blocking changes until the existing findings have been remediated or accepted through a reviewed allowlist.
  • The complete upstream AIQ test suite is not duplicated. CI validates this blueprint against the repository-pinned AIQ submodule revision.

Validation

  • Workflow YAML and GitHub Actions semantics validated with Actionlint
  • All shipped NAT configurations validated
  • uv lock --check
  • Flake8
  • ShellCheck
  • Bandit
  • detect-secrets
  • Hadolint
  • Base and NIM-overlay Compose rendering
  • Python package build and wheel smoke test
  • 938 tests passed
  • Coverage remains above the enforced 70% floor

Review Change StackReview Change Stack

Walkthrough

Adds CI automation for validation, testing, security audits, infrastructure checks, package builds, and repository scanning. It bounds Go binary scanning, preserves incomplete verification state, narrows report error handling, hardens the container, and documents reviewed subprocess usage.

Changes

CI and vulnerability evidence pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow validation and quality gates
.github/workflows/ci.yml, tests/eval/test_process_watchdog.py
The workflow validates dependencies, compilation, NAT configuration, lint rules, tests, coverage, and repository metadata. The watchdog test waits for child progress before cancellation.
Security, dependency, and infrastructure checks
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .secrets.baseline, pyproject.toml
The workflow runs secret, Bandit, dependency, Dockerfile, Compose, packaging, and repository security checks.
Reviewed subprocess and exception controls
src/vuln_analysis/...
Source modules document fixed subprocess arguments, validated paths, intentional binds, invariant assertions, and intentionally suppressed optional failures.
Bounded report and binary scanning
src/vuln_analysis/functions/exploitability_analyzer.py, src/vuln_analysis/pipeline/helpers.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/pre_triage.py, tests/utils/test_pre_triage.py
Report readers handle only read and decoding failures. Go scanning limits output, enforces timeouts, cleans up processes, and reports incomplete evidence.
Tri-state package verification
src/vuln_analysis/data_models/exploitability_analyzer.py, src/vuln_analysis/prompts/exploitability_analyzer.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/pre_triage.py, src/vuln_analysis/utils/report_generator.py, tests/test_installation_assessments.py
Package verification accepts None. Triage logic and reports preserve incomplete verification instead of treating it as package absence.
Container runtime hardening
deploy/Dockerfile, tests/test_developer_setup.py
The Dockerfile limits package installation, cleans package metadata, enables pipefail, quotes environment values, and uses POSIX environment activation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 30640

This change adds security and CI evidence gates, but resource-heavy scans may still consume unbounded memory and repository scanning may appear successful without a valid Trivy result. Resolve these failure-handling paths before relying on the new pipeline as security evidence.

Bound crane subprocess lifetime.

subprocess.run and the streamed Popen pipeline wait without a timeout. A stalled registry or child process can block the extraction worker indefinitely. Add inactivity or child-process supervision that preserves large-image streaming, and test a non-terminating crane stub.

824-829: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make the extraction directory private before extracting untrusted archives.

_untar_to_dir invokes tar -xf on registry-controlled content. materialize_image creates a fresh staging path but does not enforce restrictive permissions on cache_root or its parents. If an untrusted user can modify that path during extraction, symlink members can redirect writes outside rootfs_dir. Isolate the extraction directory and add traversal and symlink failure-path tests.

Do not suppress Trivy execution failures.

continue-on-error: true allows all non-zero results from docker run to pass, including Trivy findings and operational failures. if-no-files-found: warn also allows the job to finish without the JSON report. Keep findings non-blocking, but fail on scan or report-generation failures and require a valid report. Trivy 0.70.0 uses the configured exit code for findings and can also return non-zero for runtime failures, so the workflow must distinguish these outcomes.

One concern with the advisory scanner handling in .github/workflows/ci.yml:

Keeping existing vulnerability findings non-blocking makes sense. The issue is that continue-on-error: true also allows the job to pass if the scanner itself fails or doesn’t produce a report.

For example, the latest pip-audit run exited 1 because it found vulnerabilities and still produced a valid report—that’s the expected advisory case. But a network error, scanner crash, or output failure would be handled the same way. Since artifact upload uses if-no-files-found: warn, the job could stay green without a usable report. The Trivy step has the same issue.

A possible fix:

  • For Trivy, use --exit-code 0 and remove continue-on-error.
  • For pip-audit, capture the exit code and verify that a valid JSON report was produced before treating findings as advisory.
  • Make missing security artifacts an error, or add a separate report-validation step.

That keeps findings advisory while making sure a green check means the scan actually completed.

✅ Resolved: Addressed by commits f47e7007, b19e232e, and 306407a6.

Add failure-path coverage for the advisory gate.

Add a workflow-level or script-level regression test for these cases:

  • pip-audit exits 1 and writes a valid vulnerability report. The job records findings.
  • pip-audit exits with another code. The job fails.
  • The report is missing, malformed, or contains skip_reason. The job fails.

This protects the distinction between vulnerability findings and scanner failures.
