What changes and why

Finding A7 of an allocation sweep: the reduced vector field red_v of compose evaluated Rᵦ*u, zero(utemp) and Rᵦ' * dutemp on every call, and it runs at every stage of the reduced ODEProblem. No test asserted its allocations.

compose now allocates two buffers of the full state once, in the element type of the basis. red_v fills them with mul!: mul!(utemp, Rᵦ, u), the full vector field into dutemp, and mul!(du, Rᵦ', dutemp). The full vector field overwrites its first argument (GeometricEquations src/odes/ode.jl), so dutemp is not zeroed.

Bytes per call, before and after

Readings of the new test's barrier after a warm call, in a cold process; "before" is the source of the base commit 9674632.

element type N = 100, k = 5 N = 1000, k = 20
Float64 1952 B → 0 B 16 736 B → 0 B
Float32 1040 B → 0 B 8464 B → 0 B

The Dual path

An implicit integrator calls the reduced vector field with ForwardDiff.Dual numbers for its Jacobian, which a buffer of the basis's element type cannot hold. Where eltype(u) is not the buffers' element type, red_v takes the allocating path of the base, unchanged. The test asserts that ForwardDiff.jacobian of the reduced field equals the Jacobian of Rᵦ' * v(Rᵦ * u) computed by hand.

Concurrency

The buffers belong to one reduced problem, so one integrator at a time uses it. The docstring of compose says so.

Tests

  • New test/Models/compose.jl (in test/runtests.jl, group core): for Float32 and Float64, at N = 100, k = 5 and N = 1000, k = 20, it asserts the value against Rᵦ' * v(Rᵦ * u) to 8 * eps(T) relative to its norm, @inferred, the Dual Jacobian, and @allocated == 0 through a fixed-arity barrier after a warm call, beside a > 0 positive control on the same barrier, behind Base.JLOptions().code_coverage == 0. 24/24 on Julia 1.13.3 and 1.12.7.
  • test/integration/pod_lorenz.jl passes unchanged, 3/3.
  • ForwardDiff joins test/Project.toml for the Dual test; it is a dependency of the package and has its [compat] entry there.
  • Full Pkg.test(): pass, 112 s.

Pre-PR verification

Fixed: none.
Unresolved: none.
Pre-existing: none found.

Checked and clean

  • The new test/Models/compose.jl passed 24/24, and test/integration/pod_lorenz.jl (which calls compose) passed 3/3. Julia 1.13.3, --check-bounds=auto, cold process.
  • Correctness: the output buffer of the full space is not zeroed before each call. GeometricIntegrators also reuses its output buffers without zeroing them, so a vector field must already overwrite its output. The Dual path keeps the allocating form of the base.
  • Type piracy: Aqua.Piracy.hunt reports 0 hits. The diff adds no method.
  • Type stability: code_typed of the reduced vector field for Float64 and Float32, with plain and ForwardDiff.Dual states. The return type is concrete, and there is no dynamic call.
  • Allocations: fatou lint reports nothing. Bytes per warm call, base copy versus branch: Float64 N=100 k=5 1952 → 0, N=1000 k=20 16736 → 0. Float32 1040 → 0, 8464 → 0. These match the CHANGELOG figures.
  • Comments and docstrings are in the present tense, with no history outside CHANGELOG.md. The [Unreleased] entry is present.
  • JuliaFormatter (sciml): the changed .jl files are formatted.

Not checked: JET and the full Aqua test_all were not run again (an earlier review passed them). The full suite was not run. Julia 1.12 was not run in this pass.

Known issues

The branch adds no KNOWN_ISSUES.md entry.

Decisions taken without the user

The plan's rulings that an arbitrator, not the maintainer, made and that this change follows:

  • Decided (arbitrator, 2026-10-12, high): a clause that claims a path is allocation-free is asserted == 0, after a warm call, through a fixed-arity barrier with concrete arguments, beside a > 0 positive control on the same barrier, and behind the coverage guard.
  • Decided (arbitrator, 2026-10-12, high): every repeatedly called method is type-stable and allocation-free, and a test asserts both; a method that calls the caller's functions is tested with callbacks that do not allocate, and a callback's allocations are the caller's.
  • Decided (arbitrator, 2026-10-10, 2026-10-12, 2026-10-16, 2026-10-20, high): the plan-wide rulings on test generators, KNOWN_ISSUES.md form, the disposition of a critic's findings, and refusal-message tests. None of them reaches this diff.

The edges that the plan decided for this change: a Dual call takes the allocating path of the base; the buffers belong to one reduced problem; the vector field's own allocations are the caller's; Float32 and Float64 are the precisions, and a buffer has the basis's element type.

Every clause of the plan holds at the head as written.

Release

No release is part of this pull request. The CHANGELOG.md entry targets 0.5.1, a patch; the release is the maintainer's decision after the merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Reduced vector fields created through compose now avoid allocations for supported Float64 and Float32 cases.
    • Calls using other element types may still allocate. The composed problem’s buffers are shared, so use it with only one integrator at a time.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for numerical results, automatic differentiation, type inference, and allocation behavior.

michakraus and others added 2 commits November 1, 2026 14:06
The closure that compose returns as the reduced vector field allocated
R*u, zero(utemp) and R'*dutemp on every call: 1952 B at N = 100, k = 5
and 16736 B at N = 1000, k = 20 in Float64. It now keeps two buffers of
the full state in the element type of the basis and fills them with
mul!, so a call in that element type allocates nothing. A call with
another element type, such as ForwardDiff.Dual from an implicit
integrator, takes the allocating path as before.

test/Models/compose.jl asserts the value against R' * v(R * u), the
inference, the Jacobian of a Dual call, and zero allocations behind the
coverage guard with a positive control, in Float32 and Float64 at two
sizes. ForwardDiff joins the test environment.

Walkthrough

compose now reuses full-state buffers when the reduced state element type matches the buffer type. Other element types use an allocating path. New tests cover numerical results, inference, ForwardDiff Jacobians, and allocations.

Changes: Reduced vector field allocation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reusable buffers and element-type dispatch
src/Models/ReducedBasis.jl, CHANGELOG.md
compose creates full-state buffers when it constructs the reduced problem. The reduced vector field uses the buffers and in-place multiplication when element types match; other element types use allocated arrays. Documentation and the changelog describe this behavior and allocation results.
Numerical, AD, and allocation validation
test/Models/compose.jl, test/Project.toml, test/runtests.jl
Tests check numerical agreement, inference, and ForwardDiff Jacobians across configured real types and problem sizes. When coverage is disabled, they also check zero allocations for the composed field. The test project adds ForwardDiff, and the test runner registers the new test set.

Merge Risk: Low · up to fda38

Composed reduced problems now reuse full-state buffers to avoid per-call allocations. Copies of a composed problem share those buffers, so running them concurrently could give wrong results. The restriction is documented and unused in the repository; consider clarifying that similar copies share the buffers. Otherwise the change looks safe to merge.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Adds an unreleased 0.5.1 changelog entry describing allocation results for compose, including the element-type condition, buffer ownership, measured values and baseline, and the associated tests and test-environment dependency.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/Models/ReducedBasis.jl: The compose documentation now describes the reduced vector field’s buffers, the element-type condition for using them, allocation for other element types, and their sharing by the reduced problem.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/Models/ReducedBasis.jl: compose now allocates full-state input and derivative buffers when constructing the reduced problem, rather than creating them on each vector-field call.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/Models/ReducedBasis.jl: red_v uses in-place multiplications and the shared buffers when eltype(u) exactly matches the buffer element type. For other element types, it retains an allocating path that forms the full state, initializes its derivative array, evaluates the full vector field, and projects the result back.

Nitpick Clarify the shared-workspace behavior of copied reduced problems.

Clarify the shared-workspace behavior of copied reduced problems.

similar(red_prob) can retain the same red_v closure. The original and copied problems can therefore share utemp and dutemp. Concurrent integrators can overwrite each other’s workspace and produce incorrect solutions.

This is not a major issue for this PR because the single-integrator restriction is documented and no repository code uses concurrent reduced problems. If concurrent copies should be supported, allocate a workspace per copy or synchronize access. Otherwise, state explicitly that similar copies also share the buffers.

Clarify in the `similar` implementation that copied reduced problems retain the
same `red_v` closure and therefore share its `utemp` and `dutemp` buffers;
explicitly document that concurrent use of those copies is unsupported.
