Closes #904

Lifecycle Evidence

🏷️ PR Type

  • type:bug — Bug fix

📝 Summary

  • Do not treat a locally tracked or manifest-listed chunk ID as proof that its payload is available. Restore the current computed payload when the transport reports ErrChunkNotFound.
  • Write successfully before recording/reconciling tracking; preserve an existing manifest entry and its metadata without duplicating it. Healthy available payloads remain no-ops; corruption and write failures remain errors.
  • Keep recovery local and bounded: no reset/prune, all-history reconstruction, cloud/ack/import/schema changes, or prompt-sharing default changes.

📂 Changes

File Change
internal/sync/sync.go Verify known payload availability, reuse the existing write path for missing current content, retain manifest metadata, and track only after write success.
internal/sync/missing_payload_recovery_test.go Seven scenarios covering default/opt-in and tracked/manifest-only restoration, bytes/records, fresh-peer imports, convergence, changed content, corruption and write failure.
internal/sync/sync_test.go Give the existing healthy known-ID no-op fixture real payload bytes; retain its no-op assertion. A manifest-only fixture now belongs to the restoration cases.
docs/codebase/sync-and-cloud.md Document the bounded recovery/consent contract and explicit historical/cloud non-goals.

🧪 Test Plan

Environment: Windows amd64, Go 1.26.4; cached dependencies only, no downloads. All database/transport fixtures are disposable; no real user database or service was used.

  • RED before production edits: focused restoration cases failed against the old behavior (known IDs returned empty without restoring bytes; failed restoration was not attempted). The independent baseline differential below separately reproduced this on exact baseline 2ab47d3f.
  • GREEN and existing error controls:
    GOTOOLCHAIN=local GOPROXY=off GOSUMDB=off GOWORK=off go test -mod=readonly ./internal/sync -run '^(TestLocalExportMissingPayloadRecovery.*|TestExportErrors)$' -count=1 -v -timeout=20s
    PASS — exit 0, 5.504s; six new scenarios and ten existing error scenarios.

  • Affected package suite:
    GOTOOLCHAIN=local GOPROXY=off GOSUMDB=off GOWORK=off go test -mod=readonly ./internal/sync -count=1 -timeout=180s
    PASS — exit 0, 26.280s; stderr empty.

  • Independent public-API differential, identical diagnostic probe/input in isolated baseline and candidate copies:
    GOTOOLCHAIN=local GOPROXY=off GOSUMDB=off GOWORK=off go test ./internal/sync -run '^TestIssue904MissingPayload$/(default|opt-in)/(healthy_control|missing_payload_unchanged)$' -count=1 -v -timeout=20s -mod=readonly
    BASE: exit 1, 3.845s — healthy controls PASS; missing-payload cases RED.
    CANDIDATE: exit 0, 3.704s — all four cases PASS.
    Both stderr streams empty.

    Healthy default/opt-in results and full shared records matched after normalizing only request/manifest clocks and test timing envelopes. Compressed bytes, modification time, and manifest were unchanged. Missing cases restored current payloads, preserved source/manifest, converged, and populated fresh peers correctly. Default exports did not start sharing prompt content.
  • gofmt, git diff --check, full source/test/doc readback, and explicit changed-path checks passed.

Preserved failures and limits

The first affected-package run found the obsolete known-ID fixture that recorded only a manifest entry but expected a no-op without payload bytes. It now supplies a real healthy payload and retains the same no-op assertion; the corrected full suite passed. Independent verification initially failed before testing because Python was unavailable, then because of a Windows tar setup problem. Those failures were preserved; after explicit authorization, parent-prepared copies enabled the successful differential above. They are not represented as test passes.

No end-to-end CLI/Git network, cloud/autosync, complete remote history reconstruction, or new transport atomicity guarantee is claimed. Existing transport write atomicity is unchanged. Missing older history remains referenced; this fix restores only current reproducible content.

💬 Notes for Reviewers

Risk: item 1 — persisted payload writes. The original defect conflated index/tracking membership with durable payload availability. Review error preservation, write-before-tracking order and manifest non-duplication. The independent review found no candidate-caused blocker within the approved local scope.

Native committed-range assessment reports medium native risk, raised to high for data-risk verification. It reports reviewDue: false / under_budget; the required separate data-risk verification was completed. No native review approval/receipt or merge authorization is claimed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Local exports now restore missing payloads for known chunks before reporting sync success.
    • Existing payloads remain unchanged, while corruption and write failures continue to surface as errors.
    • Recovery preserves manifest, source-record, and tracking state, avoids duplicate entries, and supports safe repeat exports and retries.
    • Successfully restored chunks can be imported by peers and included in subsequent delta exports.
    • Cloud synchronization and prompt-based sharing behavior remain unchanged.

CodeRabbit coverage follow-up

Addresses #1975 (comment) in 57414951a772e42bd8d6c4f53f6f080c80f81285.

Added TestLocalExportMissingPayloadRecoveryTrackedWithoutManifest (+77 lines, test-only). The fixture explicitly retains local tracking with no manifest or payload. It verifies exact restored payload/ID and export counts, exactly one manifest entry, repeated export no-op/unchanged manifest, source/tracking preservation, and fresh-peer actual session/observation identity/content with default prompts withheld. No production code or helper behavior changed.

Actual follow-up checks (Go 1.26.4, Windows amd64; GOTOOLCHAIN=local GOPROXY=off GOSUMDB=off GOWORK=off):

  • go test -mod=readonly ./internal/sync -run '^TestLocalExportMissingPayloadRecoveryTrackedWithoutManifest$' -count=1 -v -timeout=20s — PASS, exit 0, 2.484s.
  • go test -mod=readonly ./internal/sync -count=1 -timeout=180s — PASS, exit 0, 31.938s, stderr empty.
  • gofmt, diff checks, full added-test readback and one-file commit-scope checks passed.

This adds coverage of existing working behavior; no artificial RED or new functional fix is claimed. Native test-only assessment reports medium risk, reviewDue=false/under_budget, self-verification sufficient, no independent verifier required. Previous data-risk verification remains documented above. Hosted CI for the new head and CodeRabbit re-review are not claimed complete; no thread resolution or merge.

📝 Walkthrough

Local export now checks whether a known chunk’s payload exists in the transport. If it is missing, export restores the payload before recording sync success. The change preserves existing manifest entries and source records.

Export checks for a known chunk’s payload and restores it when missing. It retains existing manifest metadata and avoids duplicate entries. Tests cover opt-in and tracking modes, imports, repeated exports, and write or corruption failures. The documentation describes the local export behavior.

Explanation

Issue #904 requires verified payload availability, bounded idempotent restoration, metadata and source preservation, convergence, fresh-peer import, and distinction between missing and corrupt payloads. The PR updates internal/sync/sync.go to read known payloads, restore missing current content with WriteChunk before tracking, preserve manifest entries, and retain non-not-found errors. The added tests cover tracked and manifest-only state, repeated export, fresh-peer import, prompt consent, changed content, corruption, and write failure. The documented behavior remains limited to local current-content recovery.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #904. Production code changes local export recovery only. Tests exercise the recovery contract and error controls. Documentation records the bounded scope. The reported diff does not add reset or prune behavior, historical reconstruction, cloud or CLI/Git changes, autosync changes, schema changes, transport atomicity changes, or default prompt sharing.
