Explanation of Change

When SmartScan finds hotel reservation dates on a receipt, category and workspace limits are checked against the per-night average instead of the total. Nothing in the expense view explained this, so a $2,800 hotel stay with a $500 category limit showed no violation and no reason why.

This PR adds a muted hint under the Category row of the expense view, for example 3 nights • $233.33 per night.

  • MoneyRequestView calls the same getReservationNights helper that the limit check in ViolationsUtils uses, so the hint and the limit always agree on the night count. The nightly rate is the displayed amount divided by the nights, formatted with convertToDisplayString. This follows the existing per-attendee amount pattern.
  • The hint renders as a non-error MenuItem.HelpText after any category error, the same way the Distance row shows its hint.
  • Single-night stays and expenses without reservation dates return 0 or 1 night, so they show nothing.
  • Adds one pluralized key, common.reservationNightsWithNightlyRate({count, nightlyRate}), in all 11 locales. The whole phrase is one key so each language can set its own word order (Japanese and Chinese put the amount after "per night"). Polish uses one, few, and many forms.
  • Adds UI tests in MoneyRequestViewTest.tsx: a 3-night stay shows the hint, and a 1-night stay doesn't.

AI Tests (run by MelvinBot on this branch):

  • npm run typecheck: passed
  • npm run lint on changed files: passed
  • oxfmt (npm run fmt): no changes
  • npm run spell-changed: 0 issues
  • npm run react-compiler-compliance-check check src/components/ReportActionItem/MoneyRequestView.tsx: passed
  • npm test -- tests/ui/MoneyRequestViewTest.tsx: 35 of 35 passed, including the 2 new tests
  • Not run: the full npm test suite and the Storybook smoke test. CI covers them.
  • Browser test: not completed. The automated web session loaded a blank page, and the browser tester can't inject reservation dates. Manual testing is needed.

To test in dev, open a workspace expense that has a category, then run this in the browser console and confirm the hint appears under Category:
Onyx.merge('transactions_<transactionID>', {receipt: {hotelReservationStartDate: '2026-10-01', hotelReservationEndDate: '2026-10-04'}})
Change the end date to 2026-10-02 and confirm the hint disappears.

Fixed Issues

$ #102558
PROPOSAL: #102558 (comment)

Tests

Setup

  1. Use a workspace with Categories enabled. The hint only renders inside the Category row.
  2. Create a manual expense on that workspace, for example $700.00 with category Travel.
  3. Open the expense and note its transactionID.

How to inject the reservation dates

  • Option A: Debug mode (all platforms): Account → Troubleshoot → turn on Debug mode. Open the expense, then Debug → Transaction → JSON. Add this under receipt and save:
    "receipt": { "hotelReservationStartDate": "2026-10-01", "hotelReservationEndDate": "2026-10-04" }
  • Option B: browser console (web dev):
    Onyx.merge('transactions_<transactionID>', {receipt: {hotelReservationStartDate: '2026-10-01', hotelReservationEndDate: '2026-10-04'}})

Steps

  1. Set the dates 2026-10-01 → 2026-10-04 on the $700 expense. Verify the muted hint 3 nights • $233.33 per night shows under Category. It should be styled like the Distance row hint, not as an error.
  2. Edit the amount to $900. Verify the hint updates to 3 nights • $300.00 per night.
  3. Change the currency to EUR. Verify the nightly rate shows in EUR.
  4. Set the end date to 2026-10-03. Verify 2 nights • $450.00 per night.
  5. Set the end date to 2026-10-02 (a single night). Verify no hint shows.
  6. Set the end date to 2026-10-01, then to 2026-09-30. Verify no hint shows in either case.
  7. Remove both dates, then set only the start date. Verify no hint shows.
  8. When the Category row also shows an error, verify the hint shows below the error message.
  9. Turn off Categories on the workspace. Verify the Category row and the hint are both gone.
  10. Switch the language to Spanish and verify 3 noches • $233,33 por noche. Switch to Polish and verify the noce form (2–4 nights) and the nocy form (5 or more, e.g. 10-01 → 10-06).
  11. Log in as the approver or admin. Verify the hint shows on the same expense.
  12. Verify that no errors appear in the JS console.

Offline tests

  1. Go offline and edit the amount on the expense that has the 3-night dates. Verify the hint recalculates right away.

QA Steps

  1. On a workspace with a category limit (e.g. a $500 Individual expense limit on "Hotel"), SmartScan a multi-night hotel receipt (e.g. 3 nights, about $700 total).
  2. After the scan finishes, select the category. Verify the hint shows the correct night count and per-night rate, and that no over-limit violation appears.
  3. SmartScan a single-night hotel receipt. Verify no hint shows.
  4. If SmartScan doesn't return reservation dates, use the Debug mode method from the Tests section instead.
  5. Verify that no errors appear in the JS console.

  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.

    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

I created this PR from an upstream branch since I don't have push access to your fork.

To take ownership of this branch and be able to push updates, run:

git remote add upstream https://github.com/Expensify/App.git
git fetch upstream claude-reservationNightlyRateHint-thelullabyy
git checkout -b claude-reservationNightlyRateHint-thelullabyy upstream/claude-reservationNightlyRateHint-thelullabyy
git push -u origin claude-reservationNightlyRateHint-thelullabyy

Then you can close this PR and open a new one from your fork.

🤖 Android test steps verification results: ⚠️ partial

Step 1 passed: a workspace expense with a category shows the Category row. Steps 2 and 3 were not tested. The app froze before the tester could add the reservation dates, so these results say nothing about whether the hint works. Rerun these steps in a fresh session.

2. Set reservation dates 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-04. "3 nights • $100.00 per night" appears under Category.Blocked, not tested. Android has no JS console, so the tester turned on in-app Debug mode to edit the transaction's receipt JSON. Tests

Setup

    "receipt": { "hotelReservationStartDate": "2026-10-01", "hotelReservationEndDate": "2026-10-04" }

P2 Badge Clear stale reservation dates before showing the hint

When a user replaces a SmartScanned hotel receipt, replaceReceipt() merges receiptOptimistic into the transaction without clearing hotelReservationStartDate or hotelReservationEndDate (src/libs/actions/IOU/Receipt.ts, lines 257-304). Because Onyx deep-merges the nested receipt, this call continues using the previous receipt's dates and displays its night count and nightly rate for the replacement receipt, while violations are recomputed from newTransaction, whose receipt has no dates. Clear those fields for a genuine replacement (!isSameReceipt) or suppress the hint until the replacement's metadata arrives.

Good catch. The finding is valid, and I pushed a fix in 9236c8e.

Before the fix, the optimistic MERGE in replaceReceipt() kept the old receipt's hotel dates. The hint and later limit checks then used the old stay for the new receipt.

The fix:

  • replaceReceipt() now sets hotelReservationStartDate and hotelReservationEndDate to null when the receipt is replaced with a new one (!isSameReceipt). A crop or rotate keeps the dates. If the replacement fails, the failure data still restores the old receipt, including its dates.
  • The two Receipt fields now allow null while a replacement is pending, the same way pageCount does.
  • Tests check that a new receipt clears the dates and a crop or rotate keeps them.

Checks: typecheck, lint, and spell-check passed. ReceiptTest, MoneyRequestViewTest, and ViolationUtilsTest passed (293 of 293).

    • The component has a clear name that is non-ambiguous and the purpose of the component can be inferred from the name alone
    • The only data being stored in the state is data necessary for rendering and nothing else
    • The component has the minimum amount of code necessary for its purpose, and it is broken down into smaller components in order to separate concerns and functions
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • For any bug fix or new feature in this PR, I verified that sufficient unit tests are included to prevent regressions in this flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.
  • I have checked off every checkbox in the PR reviewer checklist, including those that don't apply to this PR.

A replacement receipt kept the old receipt's hotel dates because the optimistic merge left them in place, so the hint and per-night limit check used stale dates. A crop or rotate keeps them.

No help site update needed. This PR adds a small explanatory hint under Category (for example, "3 nights • $233.33 per night") and doesn't change how limits work, so no existing sentence in App/docs/articles becomes incorrect.
