Explanation of Change

When a search starts for a new hash, its optimistic update creates the snapshot with only search and errors. data stays missing until the response arrives, and stays missing if the request fails. Any currentSearchResults?.data[...] read during that window throws TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined, because ?. only guards currentSearchResults. TypeScript doesn't flag it because SearchResults.data is typed as required.

The main crash (Sentry APP-KT0, selectedMergeReports in useSearchBulkActions) was already guarded on main by #100674. As the C+ review asked, this PR fixes the remaining sibling reads with the same cause:

  • MoneyRequestView.tsx: the parent report fallback (Sentry APP-C89).
  • useMergeTransactions.ts: getTransaction.
  • SearchReportsMergeReports.tsx: the isLoading check.

Each read now uses currentSearchResults?.data?.[...], which matches every other snapshot read in these files.

useMergeTransactions.ts lines 85-88 were left unchanged. They already sit inside an if (currentSearchHash && currentSearchResults?.data) block, so they can't throw.

This PR also adds a regression test to tests/unit/hooks/useSearchBulkActionsTest.ts. It renders the hook with a selected report and a snapshot that has search but no data. Then it asserts the hook renders without throwing and doesn't offer Merge.

Making data optional on the SearchResults type is the long-term guard, and is left for a separate cleanup.

Fixed Issues

$ #103775
PROPOSAL: #103775 (comment)

Tests

Web (dev), where window.Onyx is available in the console:

  1. Open Spend > Reports with the report view (type:expense-report) and tick one or more reports so the bulk actions button appears.
  2. In the console, remove data from the current snapshot and keep only search:
const snaps = await Onyx.get('snapshot_');
const [key, snap] = Object.entries(snaps).find(([, s]) => s?.search?.type === 'expense-report' && s?.data);
Onyx.set(key, {search: {...snap.search, isLoading: true, state: 'loading'}});
  1. Verify the search list shows a quick loading UI, then the reports still show and the app doesn't crash.
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

Offline tests

N/A

QA Steps

Test 1: Snapshot without data (web, using Onyx in the console)

  1. Open Spend > Reports with the report view (type:expense-report) and tick one or more reports so the bulk actions button appears.
  2. In the console, remove data from the current snapshot and keep only search:
const snaps = await Onyx.get('snapshot_');
const [key, snap] = Object.entries(snaps).find(([, s]) => s?.search?.type === 'expense-report' && s?.data);
Onyx.set(key, {search: {...snap.search, isLoading: true, state: 'loading'}});
  1. Verify the search list shows a quick loading UI, then the reports still show and the app doesn't crash.

Test 2: New search while reports are selected (all platforms, no console)

  1. Open Spend > Reports with the report view (type:expense-report).
  2. Tick one or more reports so the bulk actions button appears.
  3. Without clearing the selection, run a search you haven't run yet in this session. For example, use Filters to apply a new filter or date range.
  4. Verify the search list shows a quick loading UI, then the new results show and the app doesn't crash.
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

AI Tests

  • npm run typecheck: passed for tsconfig.app.json, tsconfig.bun.json, tsconfig.node.json and server/victory-chart-renderer. It failed on one error in tests/actions/PolicyTest.ts(782,17) (TS1117, duplicate property), a file this PR doesn't touch. None of the changed files has a type error.
  • Not run here: Jest (tests/unit/hooks/useSearchBulkActionsTest.ts), oxfmt formatting, ESLint (out of memory with the default heap), and the React Compiler check (GITHUB_BASE_REF was empty in this environment). CI covers these.

Screenshots/Videos

A new search's snapshot has only `search` until its results arrive, so `currentSearchResults?.data[...]` throws. Guard the remaining unguarded reads and cover the bulk actions case with a test.

I created this PR from an upstream branch because I couldn't find a fork of App under your account to push to.

To take ownership of this branch and push updates, fork the repo and run:

git remote add upstream https://github.com/Expensify/App.git
git fetch upstream claude-fixUnguardedSearchResultsData
git checkout -b claude-fixUnguardedSearchResultsData upstream/claude-fixUnguardedSearchResultsData
git push -u origin claude-fixUnguardedSearchResultsData

Then you can close this PR and open a new one from your fork.

I updated the PR body and marked the PR ready for review.

  • Tests: the Onyx console repro from the C+ review comment. The last step now says the search list shows a quick loading UI, then the reports still show instead of the app crashing.
  • Offline tests: N/A.
  • QA Steps: Test 1 repeats the Onyx console repro on staging. Test 2 needs no console: select reports, then run a new search with Filters while the selection stays active. Then confirm the app doesn't crash.
  • PR Author Checklist: all boxes checked.

P2 Badge Exercise a snapshot reader changed by this commit

This renders only useSearchBulkActions, whose selectedMergeReports access already used currentSearchResults?.data?.[...] in the parent commit; it never executes MoneyRequestView, useMergeTransactions, or SearchMergeReports, which are the three production readers changed here. Consequently, this test passes with all three fixes reverted and cannot prevent this crash from regressing; add coverage that supplies a data-less snapshot to the changed call paths.

@MelvinBot 🟡 Agree with Codex here. This test protects the selectedMergeReports line that #100674 already fixed, and that's still useful since #100674 shipped without a test.

But none of the 3 lines this PR changes run here, so reverting the fixes in MoneyRequestView, useMergeTransactions and SearchReportsMergeReports still passes. Can we add one case that hits a changed line? useMergeTransactions is the cheapest one: renderHook it with useSearchResultsContext mocked to return a snapshot that has only search, plus a mergeTransaction whose target ID isn't in the merge draft, so getTransaction reaches the snapshot read:

// Given a merge started from search while the new search's snapshot only has `search` (optimistic loading state)
mockCurrentSearchResults = {search: {type: CONST.SEARCH.DATA_TYPES.EXPENSE}};

// When the hook resolves the target transaction
const {result} = renderHook(() => useMergeTransactions({mergeTransaction: {targetTransactionID: '1', sourceTransactionID: '2'}}));

// Then it falls back to the Onyx transaction instead of throwing
expect(result.current.targetTransaction).toEqual(onyxTransaction1);

I added the case in c30a062, as a new file: tests/unit/hooks/useMergeTransactionsTest.ts.

It renders useMergeTransactions with a snapshot that has only search. The merge draft has no eligibleTransactions, so getTransaction reaches the snapshot read changed at useMergeTransactions.ts:59. It asserts that both target and source fall back to the Onyx transactions. If you revert the data?. fix, the read throws during render and the test fails.

It passed in CI (test (job 7)), along with typecheck, ESLint and Oxfmt.

🟢 LGTM - Tests well, crash fixed (for now, this PR covers all unguarded snapshot reads, see below for details)

@mountiny All unguarded snapshot reads are fixed in this PR. The bigger problem is that SearchResults.data is typed as required, while the optimistic snapshot from a new search has no data until the response arrives.

That's why TypeScript never flagged any of these crashes, and a new currentSearchResults?.data[...] would typecheck and crash the same way.

I tried making data optional locally to see how big that change would be. It adds around 95 type errors in 8 files, not counting tests. Most of them are in SearchUIUtils, which passes data into many helpers as if it's always there.

Errors per file

File Errors
src/libs/SearchUIUtils.ts 81
src/libs/MergeTransactionUtils.ts 8
src/hooks/useSearchAutoRefetch.ts 2
src/components/Search/SearchResultsProvider.tsx 1
src/components/Search/SearchList/ListItem/TransactionGroupListItem.tsx 1
src/components/Search/hooks/useOptimisticSearchTracking.ts 1
src/libs/actions/IOU/SplitTransactionUpdate.ts 1

That's too much for this PR, so I'd keep it separate. Do you think it's worth opening a follow-up issue for the type change, or should we leave it as is ?

Thanks! @ikevin127 what if we make it optional only in SearchResultsProvider currentSearchResults.data?

That is where these crashes came from right?

Thanks! @ikevin127 what if we make it optional only in SearchResultsProvider currentSearchResults.data?

That is where these crashes came from right?

@mountiny Yes, all of them came through SearchResultsContext (useSearchBulkActions, MoneyRequestView, useMergeTransactions, SearchReportsMergeReports), so scoping the type change to the context is a good middle ground.

I tried it on this PR's head by typing SearchResultsContextValue.currentSearchResults as Omit<SearchResults, 'data'> & {data?: SearchResults['data']}. That gives 15 errors in 9 files instead of ~95. None of them are unsafe reads, since this PR already guarded those.

They're all spots that pass the whole context object into something typed as SearchResults:

  • useHydrateReportsFromSnapshot (4 callers)
  • isSearchDataLoaded / isSearchPending (useSearchPageSetup, SearchColumnsPage, SearchPage)
  • useSearchColumnsToShow
  • getTransaction in useMergeTransactions
  • the lastNonEmptySearchResults state/ref in SearchPage and useSearchBulkActions

🟢 It also catches the crash pattern we care about: putting back the old currentSearchResults?.data[...] in MoneyRequestView fails with 'currentSearchResults.data' is possibly 'undefined'.

One caveat: this only protects context consumers. Direct useOnyx(snapshot_...) reads still get the required data type, but that's not where these crashes came from.

It's small enough for its own PR - I think it's worth a follow-up issue.

No help site update is needed. This PR is a crash fix: it adds optional chaining to three search snapshot reads so the app doesn't crash while a search is loading, and it doesn't change any user-facing feature, label, or workflow.

@MelvinBot how to complete steps from Test 2 on Android and iOS when ticking one or more reports so the bulk actions button appears, we cannot proceed to run a search without clearing the selection?

@MelvinBot

You can't run Test 2 on Android or iOS phones. You didn't miss a step. Please mark Test 2 N/A on native phones and run it only on a wide layout: desktop web (Chrome or Safari), the desktop app, or a tablet in landscape.

On a phone, ticking reports turns on selection mode. Selection mode replaces the search bar, type tabs, sort, and Filters with a "Select multiple" header and the bulk actions button. Every way out of selection mode (header back, Android back, switching tabs) clears the selection. So you can't reach Filters while reports stay selected.

On wide layouts, use Filters (a new filter or date range) for step 3, not sort. Changing the sort clears the selection.

Test 1 (the Onyx console step) is the reliable repro for this fix.
