Explanation of Change

This PR adds support for displaying the report's configured custom columns as read-only fields in single-expense report and expense views.

It also adds the Customize fields option to allow configuring which fields are displayed, reusing the same column preferences used by the report view.

Fixed Issues

$ #101300
PROPOSAL: N/A

Tests

Test Steps

  1. Create or open a workspace with custom report columns configured.
  2. Create a report with at least one expense.
  3. Configure additional columns for the report, such as Category GL code, Exchange rate, or MCC.
  4. Verify the configured columns are displayed in the report list view.
  5. Open an expense from the report.
  6. Verify the configured columns are displayed as read-only fields in the expense view.
  7. Open a single-expense report
  8. Open the More menu and select Customize fields.
  9. Update the displayed fields and verify the changes are reflected in the expense/single-expense view.
  10. Verify the regular expense fields and report behavior remain unchanged.
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I followed proper code patterns (see Reviewing the code)
    • I verified that comments were added to code that is not self explanatory
    • I verified that any new or modified comments were clear, correct English, and explained "why" the code was doing something instead of only explaining "what" the code was doing.
    • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is grammatically correct in English. It adheres to proper capitalization guidelines (note: only the first word of header/labels should be capitalized), and is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I followed the guidelines as stated in the Review Guidelines
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • If a new CSS style is added I verified that:
    • A similar style doesn't already exist
    • The style can't be created with an existing StyleUtils function (i.e. StyleUtils.getBackgroundAndBorderStyle(theme.componentBG))
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

Hey, I noticed you changed src/languages/en.ts in a PR from a fork. For security reasons, translations are not generated automatically for PRs from forks.

If you want to automatically generate translations for other locales, an Expensify employee will have to:

  1. Look at the code and make sure there are no malicious changes.
  2. Run the Generate static translations GitHub workflow. If you have write access and the K2 extension, you can simply click: [this button]

Alternatively, if you are an external contributor, you can run the translation script locally with your own OpenAI API key. To learn more, try running:

npx bun ./scripts/generateTranslations.ts --help

Typically, you'd want to translate only what you changed by running npx bun ./scripts/generateTranslations.ts --compare-ref main

Accessibility review

I found one new accessibility gap. Screen reader users can't reorder fields on mobile. The rest of the refactor keeps the same accessible names, roles, and states as main.

1. You can only reorder on mobile with a touch drag, and screen readers have no other way to do it

This PR adds drag-to-reorder on native for the first time. On main, native rows were plain MultiSelectListItems. A drag starts in two ways:

With VoiceOver or TalkBack on, double-tap-and-hold may start the drag. However, the user can't then move the row to a target. Nothing tells them that long-press reorders the row. On web, dnd-kit's KeyboardSensor covers keyboard users (DraggableList/index.tsx:156). Native has no equivalent. This also falls short of WCAG 2.5.7 (Dragging Movements), which asks for a way to reorder without dragging.

Suggested fix: add "Move up" and "Move down" accessibilityActions to each draggable native row, and handle them in onAccessibilityAction by swapping the row with its neighbor and calling the same onDragEnd logic. If that's out of scope, track it as a follow-up. Without it, screen reader users can only toggle fields, not reorder them.

What I checked with no regressions found
  • EditableField, MerchantField, DescriptionField, AttendeesField: rows get role=button only when onPress is set (MenuItemRoot.tsx:168). This matches the old interactive={canEdit}. Labels come from the name and value leaves, and the error indicator still adds "Your review is required." Attendees keep their explicit "Attendees, <names>" label.
  • ToggleField and BillableField: keep the old pattern, with visible text marked aria-hidden and the Switch carrying the label.
  • MoneyRequestViewAdditionalField: read-only MenuItemField rows. An empty value reads as the field name only, which matches the agreed "no placeholder" design.
  • Google merchant link: still a labeled button nested in the merchant row, the same as the old furtherDetailsComponent.
  • "Customize fields" menu option: has a text label and an icon, like the other secondary actions.
  • Minor, not new: the amount row's explicit label (AmountField.tsx:32) doesn't mention the "paid" checkmark. The old MenuItem label didn't mention it either. You could add it if you want.

I reviewed the code only and didn't run a screen reader.

Some fields may be redundant, since other fields already include their info. For example, Posted date is already in Date.

Please ignore my comments on the unit tests if we want AI to maintain them and don't care about their human readability.

When Track billable expenses is disabled in workspace settings, staging doesn't show the Billable field for a non-billable expense, but this PR shows it.

Unit testing the heading is fine, but I'd rather not highlight it in the case description or the code comment.

Code review

I found three behaviour issues worth fixing before merge, plus two smaller ones. I left out anything already raised in the review threads (Billable visibility, redundant fields, JSDoc, tests, mobile screen-reader reorder). The extracted field components match main line by line, so the refactor itself doesn't regress existing fields.

1. Hidden fields also hide their violations (and existing users lose editors on deploy)
Once nvp_reportDetailsColumns has any value, the view renders only the saved list plus Amount (getMoneyRequestViewFields.ts:35, MoneyRequestView.tsx:1273, :1638). Category, Tag, Tax, Description and Attendees violations only show on their own row.

  • Example: your saved table columns are Date, Merchant, Amount, and the policy requires categories. The expense has a "Missing category" violation, but the expense view has no Category row, so you can't see or fix it.
  • This preference already exists on main. Anyone who customized their report table loses those editors when this ships, without ever opening Customize fields.
  • Suggested fix: always render a field that has an error from getErrorForField, or that the policy requires.

2. Users with no saved preference get new MCC and Exchange rate rows
With no preference, getMoneyRequestViewFields.ts:31 appends the data-driven columns from getColumnsToShow. That turns on MCC and Exchange rate when any expense on the report has them (SearchUIUtils.ts:6866-6872, data from MoneyRequestView.tsx:1262). A USD expense on a report with one EUR expense gets an empty "Exchange rate" row. This doesn't match the comment that the default keeps "the expense editor's established order".

3. One save in Customize fields rewrites the report table's columns
With no saved preference, the expense picker starts from all 13 expense fields (ReportDetailsColumnsPage.tsx:106). Any change saves that whole list plus Receipt into the shared preference (:118-128). Custom mode doesn't hide empty columns.

  • Example: you untick Attendees on one expense. Every report table now shows Description, Card, Tax rate, Tax amount, Reimbursable and Billable, even when they're empty, and Amount moves next to Receipt.
  • Sharing the preference was agreed, but please confirm this side effect is intended.
Smaller items
  • Stale vendor preference (low): hasCustomColumns is based on the raw saved list (MoneyRequestView.tsx:1273). getColumnsToShow drops Vendor when the feature isn't available. If the saved list is just [VENDOR], it falls back to table defaults, but the view still treats them as custom. Description, Attendees, Tax, Reimbursable and Billable then disappear. Base the check on the filtered list instead.
  • Native drag in grouped Search columns (please verify on device): the grouped DraggableLists on the Search columns page can now be dragged on native, but they sit inside a plain ScrollView and don't set shouldRestrictDragToEnabledItems (ColumnsSettingsList.tsx:240-279). After scrolling, the drag can be offset from your finger. A selected column dropped among unselected ones also snaps back. I found this by reading the code and didn't run it.

Preserve the extracted expense fields while integrating current tag, vendor, reimbursement, reservation and attendee behavior from main.
Respect workspace boolean visibility, omit redundant fields, retain required editors, and preserve table-only columns and unavailable-vendor fallback. Add focused regression coverage.
Expose valid Move up and Move down actions through the shared selection rows, preserve required fields, and add localized labels and native regression tests.
Document useful prop semantics, remove redundant headers, split independent test cases, and make test descriptions and assertions easier to review.

@MelvinBot, could you help me understand why codex review isn't working here? Is it an issue with this specific PR? Thanks.

Codex works elsewhere in the repo, so this looks specific to this PR. The failure happens on Codex's side, and nothing in the PR blocks it. Codex has failed all 3 runs here, with Failed to sample tokens twice and then An unknown error occurred. In the same window, Codex finished reviews on hundreds of other App PRs. One of them is a larger fork PR, [Wise] Create Initial Intake Form (+3,825 lines, completed).

Here's what I'd try:

  1. Push a new commit, for example by merging main, then comment @codex review again.
  2. If it still fails, an Expensify admin of the Codex integration can check the detailed error in the Codex cloud dashboard, or report it to OpenAI.
Details
  • Failed runs on this PR: 2026-10-23 06:10 UTC and 10:09 UTC (Failed to sample tokens), then 2026-10-24 03:15 UTC (An unknown error occurred). Codex has never posted a completed review on this PR.
  • In the last few days, I found only one other failed Codex review, on a single PR. On that PR, Codex reported only a "failed" status, with no Failed to sample tokens error.
  • PR size (+2,654 / −632 lines, 53 files) doesn't explain it alone, because larger fork PRs were reviewed fine.
  • Failed to sample tokens is an error from OpenAI's model backend. I can't see Codex's logs, so I can't confirm the exact trigger. A fresh head commit gives Codex a new snapshot to review, which may get past it.

P2 Badge Avoid saving both aliases and synthesized editor columns

When the saved table preference contains POSTED without DATE (or TOTAL_PER_ATTENDEE without ATTENDEES), getMoneyRequestViewFields exposes the alias as Date/Attendees in selectedColumnIds. After any unrelated field addition or reorder, columnsToSave therefore already contains the synthesized editor, and this splice inserts the original alias too, so the report table unexpectedly gains an extra Date/Attendees column just from customizing the expense view. Preserve the alias by replacing its synthesized editor rather than retaining both.
