Ask Concierge: one question, one thread #94503
Description
Problem
Concierge lives in the Inbox today and isn't treated any differently than a regular chat. There's no clean way to keep "one question, one thread," and no familiar way to browse past Concierge conversations the way users expect from tools like ChatGPT/Claude.
Plan
Build a dedicated Ask Concierge experience based on the following decisions:
- How are the question chats stored in the database?
- ⭐ As separate threads off of the current parent Concierge DM.
- What chats appear in the
Ask Conciergetab?- ⭐ Only chats that are child threads of the Concierge DM (i.e. no reports, #admins, etc).
- Can anyone else appear in a chat in
Ask Concierge?- ✅⭐ These are normal DM threads, which you can invite others to.
- What chat features does
Ask Conciergehave relative to Inbox?- ⭐ All of them. Messages will be marked unread when Concierge or another user replies (or if you mark them as unread). If you are mentioned, a 🟢 will appear.
- Is Concierge anywhere else?
- ✅⭐ Concierge can be in other chats/reports/etc.
Process
This plan should start with a post of a problem/solution statement to #expensify-open (CC7NECV4L), followed by a predesign.

Shawn and I are working on a pre-design of some variations on the design. Should be able to present it today or tomorrow.

Created the sub-issue Ask Concierge: use the same experience in the Concierge side panel and remove side panel special cases and assigned it to you.
It lists the
isInSidePanelbranches to remove, the code that becomes dead, and two open decisions: whether history state is shared across surfaces, and the side panel layout. The main dead code isuseConciergeSidePanelReportActions, the fake greeting, andShow history.It overlaps with the "Make the RHP match" part of Ask Concierge: animate state transitions and bring the same UI to the RHP.
