Local web dev stuck offline: dev proxy gets a Cloudflare 403 on /api/Ping #105232

Closed

Description

@amjadiqbal

Hi, I'm setting up local web development for the first time and can't get past the sign-in page.

I'm on a fresh clone of main (0649685, 28 Oct), with Node 26.12.1 and npm 11.20.0 from .nvmrc, and no .env file. I ran npm install and npm run setup-https, and added dev.new.expensify.com to /etc/hosts. npm run web builds fine and opens https://dev.new.expensify.com:8082/.

The problem: every /api/Ping through the local proxy comes back 403 from Cloudflare (cf-mitigated: challenge). The app shows "You appear to be offline", so I can't sign in.

What I've tried:

  • My home connection in Pakistan, plus VPNs in France and the Netherlands. Same 403 every time.
  • new.expensify.com works normally in the same browser, so only the dev proxy's requests seem to be blocked.

Is the dev proxy supposed to get through Cloudflare, or am I missing a setup step? I wondered if it's related to #104525, which started running the Cloudflare Worker in local dev.

I've also asked to join #expensify-open-source and will follow up there once I'm added. Thanks!
