[Liquid Glass Follow Up][Tech Debt] Remove Skia from the nav bar #104204

Open

Description

@grgia
  1. Long-term solution for the iOS tab bar rendering - remove Skia from the nav bar (e.g. react-native-nano-icons) so iOS lays out icons/indicators natively (landscape, Workspaces indicators), instead of recreating native behaviour manually. (comment, decision)

Render iOS tab bar icons natively instead of with Skia

Problem
On iOS 26, UIKit ignores most tab item colors and paints every badge in the selected tab's color. To keep our colors and status dots, the tab icons are drawn with Skia, each with its own dot and (on iOS) its own label. That means we recreate layout that iOS would otherwise do for us, and it already shows: landscape layout and the Workspaces indicators look better when the elements are real native items.

What to do

  • Remove Skia from the tab bar on iOS.
  • Try react-native-nano-icons (https://x.com/stachbial/status/2109650296443916549) or another approachthat gives iOS plain icons it can lay out natively, while keeping our colors and status dots.
  • Confirm landscape and the Workspaces indicators then lay out correctly without manual code.
