Addresses a confirmed audit of the shared build-cache server. - Namespace isolation: Gradle cache keys were written to a flat Redis keyspace shared across all sessions, letting a writer poison entries that other builds execute. Every key is now prefixed with a server-trusted scope: an optional cache.namespace (per deployment) plus a "gradle" / "bazel:*" protocol scope. The prefix is applied server-side and is never derived from client input, so a client cannot address another namespace. WithNamespace now composes prefixes instead of overwriting. - Auth required on write: dropped the full auth pass-through. With auth.enabled=false only GET/HEAD may be anonymous; PUT always requires the writer credential. - Constant-time credentials: username is now compared with subtle.ConstantTimeCompare, and a role with an empty configured username or password can never match (no empty-credential bypass). - Generic /health: no longer leaks Redis error strings to callers. - Chart: default reader/writer passwords are empty and `required`, so installs fail unless real secrets are supplied; docs no longer ship the changeme defaults. Added cache.namespace value and wiring. Tests cover namespacing, cross-namespace isolation, write-auth enforcement (including with auth.enabled=false), and credential checks. Reject cache.namespace values containing ':' so configured namespaces cannot reconstruct another deployment's Redis key prefix. Always provision writer credentials (reader stays gated on auth.enabled) so authenticated writes keep working when auth is disabled. Replace the unchecked WithNamespace type assertion with a comma-ok form that fails startup cleanly instead of panicking. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <[email protected]>
Summary
Fixes a confirmed security audit of the shared Gradle/Bazel build-cache server. No cluster changes.
1. Cache isolation (critical: cache poisoning / RCE)
Gradle cache keys were written to one flat Redis keyspace shared by every session, so a writer could poison an entry that a victim build later executes. Every cache key is now prefixed with a server-trusted scope before it reaches Redis:
cache.namespace(set per deployment, e.g. per exercise) isolates deployments that share one Redis, andgradle, bazel:ac,bazel:cas) keeps the two cache protocols from colliding.Chosen keying. The prefix comes only from server config, never from the request, so a client cannot address another namespace, even with a crafted key such as
ex2:gradle:evil(it lands under the caller's prefix). I did not key by the authenticated username/role: reader (students) and writer (CI) must share one keyspace for the cache to function, so a per-username prefix would break reads of what CI wrote. The trust boundary that matters here is cross-deployment, which the configured namespace enforces.WithNamespacenow composes prefixes instead of overwriting, so scopes nest correctly.2. Never allow unauthenticated writes
Removed the full auth pass-through. When
auth.enabled=false, onlyGET/HEADmay be anonymous;PUTalways requires the writer credential (for Gradle and Bazel).3. Chart passwords
auth.reader.password/auth.writer.passwordnow default to""and arerequired, sohelm install/templatefails unless real secrets are supplied. No secrets are committed; docs no longer ship thechangeme-*defaults. Added thecache.namespacevalue and wired it through the ConfigMap.4. Misc hardening
subtle.ConstantTimeCompare(password already was); a role with an empty configured username or password can never match (closes an empty-credential bypass)./healthreturns a generic status and no longer leaks Redis error strings./metrics: deferred / noted. Left unauthenticated so the Prometheus Operator ServiceMonitor keeps scraping it. Recommend restricting it at the network layer (NetworkPolicy / separate port) rather than adding Basic auth that would break scraping.Tests
go build ./...andgo test ./...pass. Added tests for key namespacing, cross-namespace isolation, key-escape prevention, write-auth enforcement (including withauth.enabled=false), empty-credential rejection, and wrong-username rejection.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
