feat(task): add global MLX chat with automatic setup - #923
Conversation
Deploy a shell-independent home Taskfile and bounded no-thinking MLX launcher. Reuse working environments, provision missing prerequisites, and keep model storage on the external SSD. Cover cache continuity, setup ordering, mise-backed test tools, and selective deployment into a fresh home. Addressed in follow-up #927, commit bc86d47. The documented command now uses a macOS/Linux standard-library runner with a hard timeout, process-group cleanup (including grandchildren), and exit/signal propagation. Process-level regressions cover timeout and Ctrl+C cleanup. Leaving this thread unresolved while the follow-up is unmerged.

PyPI mlx-lm 0.32.2 Requires-Dist huggingface-hub dependency metadata version
💡 Result:
For **`mlx-lm==0.32.2`**, PyPI metadata lists **no direct `huggingface-hub` dependency** in `Requires-Dist`. It does list `transformers>=5.7.0`, which may bring in `huggingface-hub` transitively; that transitive version isn’t specified by `mlx-lm`’s metadata. 💡 Result:
For **`mlx-lm==0.32.2`**, PyPI’s published metadata says:
- `transformers>=5.7.0` — **no upper bound**
- No direct `huggingface-hub` requirement is listed. ([pypi.org](https://pypi.org/pypi/mlx-lm/0.32.2/json))
So if your conflict is with an older Transformers version, `mlx-lm 0.32.2` requires Transformers 5.7.0 or newer. Any `huggingface-hub` constraint would come indirectly through another dependency, not this release’s direct `Requires-Dist`.
PyPI lists **0.32.2** as the latest release, dated **October 16, 2026**; it lists 0.32.1 and 0.32.0 before it. ([pypi.org](https://pypi.org/project/mlx-lm/0.32.2/))

For **`transformers==5.7.0`**, the `huggingface-hub` dependency is **`>=1.0.0,<2.0`**. So later **1.x** versions satisfy the declared bound; **2.0.0 and later do not**. huggingface_hub 1.0 snapshot_download local_files_only incomplete cached snapshot completeness guard source
💡 Result:
**For `huggingface_hub` v1.0.0, I don’t find the incomplete-snapshot guard.** The guard shown in current source is in [`_snapshot_download.py`](https://github.com/huggingface/huggingface_hub/blob/main/src/huggingface_hub/_snapshot_download.py): offline/cache fallback calls `_raise_if_incomplete_snapshot` before returning a cached snapshot. It compares the cached tree listing—after applying `allow_patterns` and `ignore_patterns`—against files present locally, and raises `IncompleteSnapshotError` if any expected files are missing. If there’s no cached tree listing, it can’t verify completeness and returns the folder anyway. ([github.com](https://github.com/huggingface/huggingface_hub/blob/main/src%2Fhuggingface_hub%2F_snapshot_download.py?utm_source=openai))

Validate cached snapshots before reuse.
mlx-lm>=0.32.2 can resolve huggingface_hub==1.0.0 through transformers>=5.7.0. In that Hub version, snapshot_download(..., local_files_only=True) returns an existing snapshot directory without checking that all files exist. An interrupted download can therefore bypass the LocalEntryNotFoundError handler, reach model loading, and fail again on every run.
Check the snapshot before accepting it. Raise LocalEntryNotFoundError when required files are missing so the existing online call can resume the download.

Verified and addressed in follow-up #927, commit bc86d47. One correction: Transformers 5.7.0 requires huggingface-hub >=1.5.0,<2.0, not >=1.0.0; Hub 1.5.0 still returns partial snapshot directories. The launcher now checks Qwen's config/tokenizer/chat template/index and every indexed shard, resumes once at the returned cached revision in the external cache, then checks again before loading. Tests cover missing files/shards, offline partial-cache failure, subsequent cache-only reuse and unhidden errors. Leaving this thread unresolved while the follow-up is unmerged.

@DevSecNinja Thanks for the correction. My dependency claim was wrong: Transformers 5.7.0 requires huggingface-hub>=1.5.0,<2.0. Hub 1.5.0 still permits partial cached snapshots, so the finding remains valid.
Thanks for addressing this in #927. Per your request, this thread should remain open until the follow-up merges.

Learning: For the MLX launcher in home/dot_config/mlx/chat.py, Transformers 5.7.0 requires huggingface-hub>=1.5.0,<2.0, not >=1.0.0. Hugging Face Hub 1.5.0 can return a partial cached snapshot directory from snapshot_download(..., local_files_only=True), so cache-directory existence alone does not establish model completeness.

Fix the ! grep assertions. In these positions they never fail the test.
Bash set -e ignores the exit status of a pipeline negated with !. Bats can only detect a failed ! cmd when it is the last command in the test. Lines 287 and 345 are the last commands, so they work. Lines 269, 286, and 330 are followed by more commands, so they always pass. Line 269 is the only check for the "no --upgrade" requirement, so that requirement is currently untested.

Update the negated grep assertions in the relevant Bats tests, including those
checking for “--upgrade”, “create-venv”, and “install-python”, so a match fails
the test even when later commands follow. Ensure each assertion propagates
failure rather than relying on `set -e` handling of `!`.

Addressed in follow-up #927, commit bc86d47. Replaced all five negated greps with run grep followed by [ "$status" -eq 1 ], including final-position occurrences for consistency. Injecting unexpected --upgrade, create-venv and install-python actions into temporary copies of the actual fixtures confirmed all three mutations pass with the old assertions and fail with the new assertions. Leaving this thread unresolved while the follow-up is unmerged.

Verified against mlx-lm 0.32.2's published Requires-Python: >=3.11 and addressed in follow-up #927, commit bc86d47. Task preflight, launcher and documentation now agree on Python 3.11+. Addressed together with the overlapping CodeRabbit finding in follow-up #927, commit bc86d47. Required config/tokenizer/chat-template files, the weight index and every indexed shard are checked before reuse. Recovery pins to the returned snapshot's cached revision, preserves existing external-cache files and retries only once. Reproduced two consecutive missing-shard failures against the original launcher; the fixed launcher resumes once and then reuses the complete snapshot offline. Loading and malformed-metadata errors still propagate. Leaving this thread unresolved while the follow-up is unmerged.
