💡 What: The optimization refactored 2D subset assignments of NewScaleParms and OldScaleParms (e.g., NewScaleParms[condition, "est"] <- FALSE) to direct 1D list-vector assignments (e.g., NewScaleParms$est[condition] <- FALSE).
🎯 Why: In R, 2D subset assignment on a dataframe triggers [<-.data.frame method dispatch. This function performs dimension checks, factor level alignment, and often causes a deep copy (copy-on-modify) of the entire dataframe memory. Bypassing this by acting directly on the underlying list vectors speeds up the process significantly inside looping and batch logic.
📊 Impact: Reduces computational overhead by avoiding internal R S3 method dispatch and eliminates deep dataframe copies. Performance boost is measurable as O(1) modification times vs potential O(N) copy overheads.
🔬 Measurement: Verify the change by running the test suite (Rscript -e "devtools::test()"); the logic remains perfectly equivalent while execution overhead shrinks.

This commit converts numerous occurrences of `df[condition, "col"] <- val`
into `df$col[condition] <- val`. This bypasses the R `[<-.data.frame`
method dispatch overhead, preventing unnecessary checks and deep copies
of the dataframe. This is a targeted O(1) level speedup for matrix/dataframe updates.

Closing as superseded by the older canonical PR #156 (1e6cf725a286676cc8d7575f8bf0ce74be4be351). Exact diff comparison shows #251 repeats #156's direct-column assignments, while #156 additionally preserves the unique safety and acceptance work: explicit mod2values() data-frame/schema validation, representative equivalence and Rasch regressions, corrected O(N) copy-on-modify complexity claims, and previously addressed review findings. #251 contains no unique production behavior or test evidence to preserve.
