Summary

Adds .github/workflows/release-slack.yml, which posts a release announcement to Slack whenever a vX.Y.Z tag is pushed.

  • The message is the annotated tag message plus a link to the tag, so the tag is the single source for the release notes.
  • The workflow fails clearly if the tag is lightweight. gen_version.cmake (Update to put the tag into the binaries #490) only picks up annotated tags anyway.
  • It can also be run by hand from the Actions tab (workflow_dispatch) for an existing tag. Use this to announce v1.10.0, which was pushed before this workflow existed.

This replaces the email approach from the first commit. Caltech's Microsoft 365 SMTP requires OAuth2 with Duo, which a workflow can't complete.

Setup required before merging

Repository secret:

  • SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL: incoming webhook URL for the channel to post to

Until this is set, the workflow will fail on every tag push.

Test plan

  • Create a Slack incoming webhook for the target channel and add it as SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL
  • After merge, run the workflow manually with tag: v1.10.0 and confirm the message appears in the channel

Sends the annotated tag message as the release announcement whenever a
vX.Y.Z tag is pushed. Can also be run manually for an existing tag.
Caltech mail requires OAuth2 with Duo, which a workflow cannot complete,
so announce releases through a Slack incoming webhook instead. The
message is still the annotated tag message.
