Summary

Dependabot PR #18 bumps @capacitor/cli (6.2.1 → 8.4.2), electron-builder (24.13.3 → 26.15.3), and transitively tar (6.2.1 → 7.5.21) via package.json and a large package-lock.json refresh. The tar upgrade addresses known archive extraction vulnerabilities (path traversal, decompression bombs, link sanitization). CI smoke tests (npm ci, test:server, test:tags) pass on this branch, and a local electron-builder --dir pack succeeds. However, only dev-tooling versions change; runtime Capacitor packages remain on v6, and release workflows still force electron-builder@^24, which partially undermines the stated goal.

Potential issues

  1. Capacitor CLI/runtime major-version mismatch The PR upgrades @capacitor/cli to 8.4.2 while @capacitor/core, @capacitor/android, and all first-party plugins stay on 6.x. Capacitor expects matching major versions across CLI and runtime; npx cap doctor reports CLI 8.4.2 vs core/android 6.2.1. Basic cap sync may succeed, but this is an unsupported configuration and risks subtle Android/iOS sync or plugin breakage.

  1. Release CI downgrades electron-builder after merge .github/workflows/release.github.yml and .forgejo/workflows/release.yml run npm i -D electron-builder@^24 after npm ci. That reverts the lockfile’s 26.x pin and reintroduces [email protected] on the electron-builder dependency path, leaving mixed tar versions and reducing the security benefit in release builds.

  1. @capacitor/cli 8 raises minimum Node to 22 @capacitor/[email protected] declares "node": ">=22.0.0" in package-lock.json. GitHub CI uses Node 22/24, but ANDROID.md still recommends Node 18+. Developers on Node 18–21 will hit install or runtime failures after merging only the CLI bump.

  2. Large major jumps without build-path validation in CI electron-builder 24 → 26 replaces the Go-based app-builder-bin with a TypeScript implementation and changes packaging behavior (macOS zip, icon generation, signing defaults). PR CI does not run electron-builder or Android Gradle builds, so regressions in .deb/.exe/Flatpak release artifacts would only surface at tag time.

  3. tar 7.x adds a prepare script on install Dependabot flagged that [email protected] runs a prepare script during npm ci. This is low risk from a maintainer-trusted package, but it expands the install-time execution surface compared to [email protected] and is worth a quick lockfile/package inspection in security-sensitive environments.

Suggestions

  • Do not merge the Capacitor CLI bump in isolation. Either revert @capacitor/cli to ^6.2.1 and land only the electron-builder/tar changes, or plan a coordinated Capacitor 8 migration updating @capacitor/core, @capacitor/android, all @capacitor/* plugins, and @capacitor-community/http compatibility together.
  • If the primary goal is the tar CVE fix with minimal churn, a narrower approach works: keep current devDependency majors and add an npm overrides entry forcing [email protected] (verified locally with Capacitor 6 + electron-builder 24).
  • Update release workflows Remove or change npm i -D electron-builder@^24 in release.github.yml and .forgejo/workflows/release.yml to match package.json, then run at least one full release-target build (--linux deb tar.gz and optionally --win nsis) before tagging.
  • Extend CI coverage Add a non-blocking job that runs npx electron-builder --dir and/or ./gradlew assembleDebug so dependency bumps like this get exercised before release.
  • Refresh docs If Capacitor 8 is adopted, update ANDROID.md to require Node 22+ and note any Cap 8 migration steps (SPM/CocoaPods changes, deprecated config keys like bundledWebRuntime).

Overall assessment

The underlying motivation—patching tar and refreshing build tooling—is sound, and the lockfile coherently resolves [email protected] when installed as-is. I would not merge this PR as written: bumping @capacitor/cli to v8 without upgrading runtime Capacitor packages creates a correctness risk, and release pipelines would immediately downgrade electron-builder, partially undoing the security fix. A split or follow-up PR that (a) lands electron-builder@26 plus workflow pin removal, or (b) uses a tar override while staying on Capacitor 6, is lower risk than accepting the full Dependabot grouping unchanged.
