Layers with umlauts in name not showing on map

Special case for certain, but layers are not showing on the interactive map if the layer.name includes German umlauts (and possibly other special characters). The initial zoom, legend, and displayed layer name are correct. Output of sessionInfo() attached below.

Works on my machine. Can you please try to install both mapview and leafem from github and see whether that helps?

Can you open the map in your browser and see if there are any errors in the browser console?

This problem just started to happen for me today in RStudio Server. I updated a machine from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04 and R from (I think) 4.4.3 to 4.5.0. The problem never happened before but I have not created a map right before the update, so it is entirely sure that the update is to blame. I may also have update some R packages since this last worked, but unfortunately I cannot say this with any certainty.

The same also happens with layers that contain spaces in their name. I look at the browser errors and indeed, there are messages for these layers:

There are also other special characters that cause this issue, so I thought at first that this might be related to URL encoding. But other characters that are encoded work. Here a few examples (separated by spaces):

• Characters that cause the problem: % ? ^ # \t £
• Characters that don't: ~ = ( ) & , : ; ' + - @ * $ !

The problem is the same in Firefox and Chrome.

I have looked into this some more. On my own machine (with RStudio desktop) there is no problem. And indeed, this seems to be related to RStudio server: if I save the map in a file and open it in the same browser (from within RStudio server, i.e., the file is stored on the same server) everything works as expected. So, this seems not to be a mapview bug after all.
