enumext* nested in enumext starts at 2 with DocumentMetadata

Hi, I see the problem now, and it appears with the new LaTeX release (or when using -dev). I've resolved it in (2412cb4), and it works fine, but I can't release a new version before it's fixed (latex3/tagging-project#1337) because it directly affects the package (and it's not my fault)...

Anyway, if you don't use \footnote, the update resolves this issue. I didn't follow all the steps for tagged PDF (and latex-lab or block-code rather), and that interferes with \setcounter (it happened to me before), but enumext* isn't a list environment per se, so it was to be expected.

I saw one of your questions on TeX.Sx...would you like a item-join key for enumext*? (I can add it without any problems if you need it).

For now, use l3build install for the current version (it won't change much, I'm just waiting for the \footnote issue to be fixed so I can do the new release).

Having a key for https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/762716/107497 would be nice, but item-join doesn't seem to describe what I'm looking for (I used item-columns in my answer). Or are you looking at a different question? (I suppose a different approach on that question would be some sort of syntax for a regular enumext environment that allows a few items to act as if they're in enumext*.)

I do have a separate possible feature request: If I have an enumext* with an item(n) that spans the entire \textwidth, could I nest another enumext*? I understand that it normally doesn't make sense to nest enumext* because the structure wouldn't be understandable. But that reasoning is less applicable if the item spans the entire width. On the other hand, that's a strange request.

That's exactly what I mean. The issue is that the package already has a key called item-join for the anskey* environment. However, the internal variable names won't change in the future, so it's safe to say. Have you considered using the power of enumext to handle questions and answers?

Unfortunately, this isn't possible given the implementation of the enumext* environment, which encapsulates everything within minipage... anyway, if it's something as simple as what you're showing, why not nest enumext inside enumext*?

why not nest enumext inside enumext*?

I'm hoping for horizontal numbering, but enumext[columns=2] is vertical. Would it be possible to omit the minipage if item-join equals the number of columns?

(I like the idea of combining the questions and answers. But lately I've been working with documents that already have the questions and answers created, so that I don't need to adjust them.)
